About
Traverse the diverse ecosystems of Bunyip State Park; from heathland swamps to towering mountain ash forests. Explore on foot, horseback, trail bike or in the comfort of your four-wheel drive. Keep an eye out for the southern-emu wren and swamp bush-pea, both rare sights. Follow the Lawsons Falls Circuit Walk to the only waterfall within Bunyip State Park. The narrow trail meanders through dense bush and verdant fern gullies before emerging at a small clearing with views across to Lawson Falls. Bunyip State Park is one of the few places in Victoria where our state floral emblem, the Common Heath, and state fauna emblem, the Leadbeater’s Possum, along with our state avian emblem, the Helmeted Honeyeater, can all be found.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Bunyip State Park is a beautiful nature park... however, it's best suited for those with 4WD... simply because you can't be sure what to expect on the road. It's not unusual to have potholes or trees across the road.

There are hikes within the park, picnic grounds, mountain bike riding areas, horse riding and camping areas... there are also areas set aside for those who want to ride dirt bikes.

The smell of the Australian bush is heightened in areas like this ... as are the bird sounds. The area was used for logging from 1898 until 1990, and was turned into a state park two years later.

The park is named after the bunyip, an indigenous mythical creature that was thought to live along the Bunyip River that flows through the park.

I love 4wding and Bunyip State Park is only an hour drive from home so it's perfect. Don't get me wrong.....probably 5 or 6 full days worth of driving and you will have driven most of the park but it's the sort of place you can visit over and over again. Remeber to stick to the tracks as hteir arew ay to many new tracks created that shouldn't be. Thats how parks are closed!!! Bush walking is also very populat here.

I spent a day walking through the park. Even though I took a wrong turn the track I followed was enjoyable. Some steep sections but still manageable for all. There is free camping available and a toilet facility. Camp fires were allowed when I was there.

I came here for some head space having camped here many years ago. I knew the area well but have to say that post 2009 bush fires of which 45% was burnt - I was a little disoriented.
This area was logged from 1898 until 1990 and in 1992 was turned into a State Park. The name comes from an Aboriginal mythical creature that was thought to live along the Bunyip River that flows through the park.
The terrain in the park is mostly dense forest and swampy heathland, with Prickly Tea-tree, Mountain Ash and Mealy Stringybark present.
If you want to camp, head towards the Nash Creek Camping Area under towering Mountain Ash. Watch for dropping branches though. There is goo walking within the park and areas for horseriding and mountain biking. There are also some 4wd tracks.
Don't be surprised if you come across a deer or two. They are prevalent in this area.
Please stay on the tracks where possible and take home your rubbish.
Kid friendly. Plenty of Parking. Phone reception can be iffy sometimes.

My wife and I spent a few hours having a look around the park!
Starting at the 4 Brothers Rocks which is a short walk from the carpark! We think it is a must see!

Then went to Mortimer's Picnic Area and did an 8km loop taking on a few tracks through the lush ferns and Forrest!

We will definitely be back to explore further and possibly camp at the free camp sites on offer!!

Bunyip State Park has an extensive area where 4WD and motorbikes are excluded. There is a horse float parking area in the centre of this exclusion zone with excellent trail network. The trails are mostly all usable year round and pass through all the various ecological vegetation communities in the park. Such a peaceful and safe place to ride horses and knowing that you will not be confronted by noisy and speeding vehicles is a godsend. I go regulatory and always enjoy the changing vegetation scenery. Unfortunately, the park is inundated with deer - so expect a small group to flee past on most rides.

The Bunyip State Park is only a short drive eat from the town of Gembrook, with the southern end of the park extending almost to Tynong North and Labertouche.

It is abound with nature walks, tracks, creeks, towering gums and also 4WD tracks, picnic spots, camping grounds and much more.

A fabulous way to get back to nature for a day or more.

I live on the edge of the park and I never get tired of it. So peaceful and relaxing, great place to walk and unwind. Great access and safe, great place for both locals and visitors to spend time.

My wife and I walk the tracks in Bunyip State park two or three times a week. The tracks are well formed and signposted and you can choose a variety of walking loops in and around the park. I would like to see tracks lengths on the signposts to help visitors who are unsure of the distances between tracks, roads and car parks.
