Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I did this walk today and Google maps sent me down the wrong path! Good start held me back halfan hour. People saying the walk is easy is a joke. One hour up and one hour back. Bring alot of water I got very dehydrated! Just made it back before dark. Once at the top it was good to enjoy the smoky view! Rest up and let the heart slow down. I only saw one other couple the whole way up and back. Be prepared for this tough walk.

I wasn't conditioned for the steps so it took me a little more time and breaks in between. The rest spots catered well for all and my favourite gotta be the rest stop with swings. How cool! We went during the mid day and it was well shaded throughout. We weren't there for sunset/sunrise so it's not crowded at all. Well we got the peak to ourselves. :)
Pay a small entry fee at the base. I think its all good to keep the trail safe and clean by the locals.

The viewpoint is a must! I enjoyed it so much I did it again the following day. It costs 20000 kip which includes a walking stick. The hike to the top of the mountain takes around 1 to 1.5 hours depending on your fitness and is approximately 2.55km (according to my fitapp). Wear comfortable shoes and bring water and your camera of course! It will be the best money you spend!

Make the trip up starting at 5:30am if you are in very good condition, 5am in moderate condition. Bring a headlamp and lots of water.
You will climb above the clouds and be rewarded with a never ending of clouds, looking like plains of snow. I was the only person up there when I did it.

After arriving by bus to the town on Nong Khiaw, we crossed the bridge and walked down the road for a few meters and then turned left to the view point. It is well signed so you can't miss it. There is a small entrance fee and then the steep climb up, sometimes a bit complicated, not for people who don't like climbing or who are not fit. or slow walkers like me it takes about one hour plus to get to the top. It is worth the effort. The view from the top is spectacular but the last bit of the climb is a bit complicated with rock climbing but not difficult.

Did the walk to the view point at the recommendation of a restaurant owner.
Glad we did, but wished we had been better prepared, it was a tougher walk than we expected - should not have attempted it in flip-flops and with just one bottle of water!
Had to pay a nominal fee, but in return got walking canes which were very useful!
The path is very easy to follow, but quite steep at times with some tough sections (at least for unfit 50 somethings!).
The views at the end make it well worth the effort.
Need to give yourself at least 3 hours for the return trip.

When you go to Nong Khiaw, you should definitely not miss the Viewpoint! From there you have the best view on the town surrounded by majestic carst limestone mountains. The Viewpoint is about 50 meters after the Temple of Ban Sop Houn (village on the other side of the bridge). You will see the entrance with a big bomb shell and a board, which explains you about this community project. A part of the entrance fee will go back to the local community. What a social project! The Viewpoint is open from 6am-4pm. The hike to the top takes about 1.5 hours through fields and jungle-like forest. A small adventure but don't worry, the path is well maintained and safe. When you reach the top you will be rewarded by a marvelous view on the town, its rivers and mountains. The best time is to go in the morning, when the town is still covered by a sea of clouds and slowly appears from its best side. On the top there is a hut, where you have space to relax and enjoy the scenery in the shade. This hut you can even see from the bridge. The Viewpoint is a real gem in Nong Khiaw!

I would consider myself pretty unfit. I can walk for miles on flat ground, but throw in some steps and I’m done. Considering this is a mountain, and is therefore mainly just steps, I surprised myself by doing this in an hour, with lots of stops of course. The way down took 35 minutes. The first part is definitely the hardest, but the trail does get easier as you go up and it’s helped by the fact that it’s has railings for parts and the ground is partially made in to steps, unlike some of the other hikes I’ve done where it’s been very steep and slippery. It may seem impossible at first but you will be able to do it, just take your time and know there is a view at the top waiting for you.

Climbing up the way to this viewpoint requires a good condition. But when you are up there on top, all the sweating is forgotten.
We were in Nong Khiaw in February, hence the footpath was dry and in good shape. I can imagine how slippery it will be in rainy season!
On top the view is magnificent!!
We were up there in the late afternoon and spend some time there alone. But later it got crowded with the people climbing up here for the sunset.

I went up both of the popular viewpoints in Nong Khiaw on the same day. I first did the new one (Nang None) which is 15000 entry and I hiked up to what they call "viewpoint two", which is somewhat higher than viewpoint one on that same mountain. The path is extremely rocky, and given that it had rained, the steep muddy parts were very slippery and involved holding onto a lot of trees and rocks. Especially during the descent me and my friend fell a few times. The view in the hut up there (god knows how they built it) was beautiful though!
Nonetheless, when we walked up the second original viewpoint (Phadeng Peak on the Sophoun side of the bridge, 20000) we realized that it was a lot easier to walk and had a (quite a lot) better view. Climbing it takes longer because the path is not so steep but rather a continuous path of small steps in the sand. The view up there is incredible being higher and with a much wider and better angle than the new one. Note that I would strongly discourage walking either of the viewpoint paths in the dark when it has been raining!

Can you stay there for the night? I heard there are local tour companies that offer the service

Can this be done with guide? What time is best to go? E.g for sunrise?
Written 16 October 2019
I would go early in the morning to avoid the heat. I wouldn t go before sunrise cause parts can be a bit slippy and this woyld be worse in the dark. I guess you can find a guide butvin daylight you definitely don't need one - the track is very clear, you can t get lost.
