Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Two and a half years ago nine of us rented a house close to the plaza. We purposely went for the month of September in order to observe all the celebrations that occur that month. This meant that the summer rains were not yet over. One rainy day we decided to take advantage of a special offer to attend a guided tour and luncheon in the Allende home and Museo. Our guide was a beautiful Mexican woman with a PHD from the Univ of London. Her explanation of the interior and the furnishings and the way they lived in Allende's time was extremely interesting and entertaining. After touring the rooms we gathered for a lunch of the typical dishes they served in those days. The number of participants was limited (about 25)making it intimate and cozy.
I had visited the museo several times in the past. None of the signs or explanations were in English. It just seemed like the typical colonial building of marble and tile. I have seen in the internet that they repeat this opportunity every few weeks. If you possibly have the chance to attend one it is one of the best things to do in SMA. Otherwise it is just another museo.

This museum is located in what used to be Ignacio Allende's house. It recreates the rooms as they were when Allende and his family lived there. All the furniture is original. I think this is a fun museum and kids get to learn by visiting the rooms.

The Municipal Museum of San Miguel
Until we visited this municipal museum just opposite the Cathedral, we had no idea that San Miguel de Allende played a key role in the history of Mexico and the Mexican Revolution. Housed in the stunningly beautiful former hacienda of Ignatius Allende, the well-designed displays and objects are accompanied by fulsome explanations in both English and Spanish. The house itself is worth the 40 peso entry fee but the excellent displays are extremely informative and gave us a much better understanding about San Miguel and the surrounding area as one of the prime gold and silver mining areas of Mexico and one of the principal sources of Spain’s colonial wealth. It really is worth a visit. Some of the rooms in this large mansion are outfitted with period pieces and give a good picture of how the Allende family lived.

San Miguel has hardly any museums. Most of them are small have a particular theme. This historical museum is the home of one of the primary instigators of the independence movement from Spain in 1810, Ignacio Allende. San Miguel, formerly known as San Miguel el Grande, was renamed to San Miguel de Allende in honor this hero of the independence. The museum was completely renovated around 2008. All the labels for exhibits are in English and Spanish. The information, if you spend some time reading it all, is extensive. You will leave with a solid knowledge of the history of San Miguel during these tumultuous years, The upstairs has been furnished with authentic furnishings. There are amazing paintings and drawings from these early days. Plus it is very inexpensive. Seniors are free. Closed Monday.

I learned quite a bit about Ignacio Allende and the start of the Mexican War of Independence, as well as what it might have been like to live in an upper class home in the early 1800s. Some of the photos led me to believe this was a smallish house museum. Not so. It's an impressive two-story with a central courtyard as well as another small side patio. It's located directly next to the large St. Michael's church. There is an admission charge. Each room is furnished with period pieces and has a large label in Spanish and English describing how it was used by the Allende family, as well as information about Allende's role in the revolution.

The Museo Historico de San Miguel de Allende was our first stop during our recent visit to San Miguel and we found that our understanding and appreciation of the city and the region was enhanced by the information and the exhibits at the museum. The information is presented in a historical sequence from the foundation of the first mission and the role of San Miguel in the movement for Mexican independence and in the growth of the region related to silver mining is laid out in a manner that enriched our understanding of San Miguel's wealth and influence.

Although it is poor in exhibition it is a good place to go because we can have information about the birth of the city and who was Allende and his importance to Mexican people.

This was an unexpected stop for us and we are glad we did. If you are lucky you can catch a tour but it is easy to do on your own. It is in need of repair but talking to some of the instructors it is a fun place if you have the time. The have a nice ceramic areaa to make art objects and a wonderful instructor. Some real nice art from local people and murals on several walls.
