- PaulshappyCourtenay, Canada4,144 contributionsQUINTA AVENIDA: Too much stress, not enough fun!For our first visit to Playa del Carmen, we had 5th Avenue as a 'must-do' based on the fact it's Tripadvisors #2 thing to do. Well, let me tell you fellow travellers, if you've experienced walking down a street with no nice views, shops lined up on each side, all selling the same crap, and about 100 hungry vendors all shouting at you BS stories just to get you into their stores, than do yourself a favour and pass on this experience! That said, we carried on our day-time journey until we reached the end at 'The Central Square' (reviewed separately, spoiler alert it sucks too!) And then we stripped-off, went for a wonderful swim in the ocean, and walked back up along the beach with nobody bothering us, and a cold cervesas from Oxxo in our hand. Enjoy the journey. - beccasarOwen Sound, Canada50 contributionsGood if you like shoppingWe were staying at a nearby resort & decided to go into downtown Playa dle Carmen to check it out. It is definitely a bustling area with every imaginable store & restaurant. The public beach area was okay but does not compare with the areas occupied by the resorts to the south in Playacar. After about an hour or so we decided to head back to the resort. Shopping & or bar hopping is not really our scene so we can only recommend it if it is yours...Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 January 2024
- Fred C17 contributionsIt's OK, I guessReminded me of a Mexican Niagara Falls. It was really cheesy, and not true Mexico, we prefer old traditional Mexico. I collect and love tequila, however they will make every attempt to rip you off here. Real tequila from Jalisco is labled "tequila" do not get fooled into buying $5 agava spirt for $200 as they will try to sell it to you, it's usually lower end mixo crap. You won't be able to wheel and deal with vendors here like other markets in Mexico. All in all an experience, however this is not traditional Mexico that we enjoy, others may find it amazing so go and make your own decision. When there be sure to find El Fogon for the best food around.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 19 February 2024
- Susan SWelland, Canada46 contributionsKeep saying No thankyou5th avenue is a lovely walk as there is enough shade for comfort. Shop keepers calling out to you and getting in your face made it very annoying. 5 different men said they were my waiter at my resort and I should come to their store. Lots of nice restaurants and during the day the music is not loud. The side roads go down to the waterside. Repetitive pharmacy’s and souvenir stores.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 March 2024

- Kevin PHalifax, Canada205 contributionsIf you don't mind a lot of walking and constantly being hassled, then do itA LONG walk. A lot of the stores offer the same thing, tequila and the various souvenirs. Be wary of some of the stores trying to hock overpriced tequila. They can be kind as can be while they think you are buying something, then turn nasty when you don't.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 April 2024
- AVA817Texas9 contributionsGood Day OutingWent during the day and it was great. A ton of souvenir shops and restaurants. Also walked through Paseo del Carmen Shopping Mall which also a very nice walk with great shops. Do shop owners ask you to come in yes but a simple No Thank You or No Gracias and they move on. Was a nice little trip to town to get off the beach for a day. Ate lunch at Las Hijas de la Tostada 5ta Av. y Calle 2 and it was absolutely fantastic. No one offered us drugs like others said but I can see night time being a different story. The beach vendors usually were the ones to offer but also a simple No Gracias and they move on no one pushed you. Would recommend during day time.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 April 2024
- Stephen KVancouver, Canada208 contributionsBirthday breakGreat vibrant place with lots of live entertainment. Be careful of two for one drink offers (watered down) and hidden inclusive tips on your bill. It’s very touristy with endless street vendors trying to sell all sorts. There are some excellent restaurants like Harry’s. it’s a fun location to kick back and relax.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 25 May 2024

This is the street in Playa del Carmen which is for the tourists. You can buy almost everything you want and you can get some great deals, but a lot of tourist rip-offs as well.
Be wary of the many "new friends" you will find there who recommend you stuff. They will tell you things like that they work at the reception of in order to gain your trust. Keep in mind that anyone knows in which hotel you are staying if they gave you a bracelet.

Quinta Avenida is the main commercial street on Playa del Carmen. Although its prices are higher than open fairs on other areas and much higher than you can find in Mexico City, it has the advantage of wider variety of itens and the offer of high quality handcraft. The street shows shops for clothes, utilities and handcraft mixing with many kinds of restaurants of several nationalities and bars.
If you are not interested in shopping, I suggest knowing Quinta Avenida through a walking tour with Estacion Mexico to get a special flavor of this street.

Be ready to say No a million times and get ready to negotiate. Everything here can be negotiated but be weary of the jewelry and visit multiple before purchasing a valuable stone. Our experience with a mayan ring started with $400 down to $100... You will also be able to find cheap massages and hair braiding. Tequila tastings in every corner! I recommend going to many shops and get a taste of the tequilas prior to making your purchase.. remember to negotiate!

Exciting avenue to visit either by day or night. It has many bars, stalls, restaurants, nightclubs, and further some more for everyone. The atmosphere here is quite vibrant and it is located in the heart of Playa del Carmen. In the evenings, everyone come down here to gather around a bar or a restaurant. Live music is ongoing all night, and it is just lovely. Not all shops are expensive, like I said above, you can find posh places if you wish to go to them, but there are also typical Mexican taquerias and pubs. Quinta Avenue is a bit long and you'll want to go back there for more.

Everything about Playa Del Carmen is here. The evenings get very busy with hoards of people walking around shopping, restaurant/bar hopping. The street will be live with people playing musical instruments on the roadside and plenty of small time vendors shouting for attention. You can see many ATMs on the street where both pesos and USD are available.

We were able to walk the shops. A lot of everything, shopping, drugs, dancing, etc. It was nice, make sure you take extra money for tips. They character people would get upset if you would just give them a couple of dollars and there are so many performers.

I'm not a shopper by preference, but walking through the outdoor shops and bargaining with vendors is an interesting experience. Almost nowhere here do you offer anything near first asking price. Keep bargaining until you are turned down; that might be some resemblance of lowest price. If you are pursued out of the shop, you'll likely get a lower price. Of course, the vendors are trying to make a living, so I don't do this with an item unless I'm actually thinking of buying. There is also innumerable restaurants and bars to eat and/or drink at. Food and drink prices less than US, but not remarkably cheap. All in all 5th Avenue is many blocks long and will consumre a far amount of your leisure time to view.

I remember Playa when it was quaint and charming. Today the place has morphed into a commercial copy of Cancun or any city that has lost its roots. Playa now charges $1 an hour for parking. If you don’t pay, they boot your car (in addition keying it). Go to Acumal instead if you’re looking for a Mexican paradise.

This place could have been great, but the street vendors made it unbearable. You can’t walk down one block without hundreds of vendors bothering you. If you stop at a kiosk they annoy you the entire time and lie, instead of letting you shop. For example, they’ll say they handmade obviously mass produced Mexican goods produced in China. Also, every one of them was the “waiter from the resort” when they weren’t. At the end I started playing back with them like I remembered them from the hotel when I knew they were lying through their teeth. I’m obviously not going to buy something from a liar. They don’t know how to sell to American tourists. They’d make a lot more sales if they just sat back instead of driving us away.
We would stay at or near our resort for meals just to avoid this street.

We visited Quinta Avenida as a short day trip from our resort. We were hoping to explore a local area, and Playa del Carmen was the closest "big" city. We had no idea what we were going to see, but we saw reviews that this avenue was good for tourists.
Pros: Many options for souvenirs for a fraction of the cost of the resorts. For example, I saw a store selling t-shirts 4 for $20 whereas our resort was selling them for $20 each. It's a great shopping location, especially if you are picking up souvenirs for many people. There are a lot of restaurant options, but they are mostly chains.
Cons: It is nearly impossible to walk down the street without being approached every 20-30 seconds. Every store, restaurant, and booth has someone trying to drag you into their establishment. I think they recognized our resort wrist bands because 4 different people claimed to work at my resort and were helping their family's store on their day off. It was strange how they were all named Carlos... We also witnessed some rather unsavory exchanges next to us inside a restaurant, and received some interesting offers while walking down the street. I would recommend not letting kids run loose here. Finally, if anyone wants to take your picture, they are going to push you into buying something.
I heard that you can go off the main strip and find less touristy places, but we didn't have time to check. Overall, it's a very touristy place that probably isn't worth spending more than a few hours at.

Are there renovations going on along the avenue? if so, is part of 5th Ave closed off or open for business ? heading down towards the end of summer and wondering if it will be an option for a night out or two!
thanks!
