- Rene RMarlboro, New Jersey152 contributionsThe Streets of Playa Del CarmenPlenty to do, the streets are filled with shops and vendors, you can haggle through most street vendors. Buyers beware, that street people know you came out of the hotel by looking at your bracelet! They say hi and tell you I'm you're waiting from whatever resort your bracelet is exposing. They try to force you to enter the store where they try to pressure you to buy! so be careful just note that I have warned you. Plenty to eat and beach is beautiful! Your have almost 50 blocks worth of shopping, just be mindful. People are watching. Dollar value is $16.20 per pesos, vendors charge you $18.00 they jack up the prices and not very well when doing their math. So, pay attention, otherwise you will have fun stay away from the side street shops.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 February 2024
- Angela LPowell River, Canada8 contributions3 week stay on 5th Ave in Playa del Carmen was a week too long for me but.....3 weeks stay on 5th Ave in Playa del Carmen was a week too long for me but a short walk to the beaches. No accessibility in Playa , noisy at night but quiet in the morning. Touristy but is close to Mayan Temples and whole cities and isIands. Fun fast ferry. Lots of beautiful cenotes. I loved getting out to the rest of the city. There are a lot of Walmarts, malls and groceries. Buy locally, l enjoy eating and shopping at little stores outside the center of town. I ❤️ Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo.Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 9 March 2024
- J P13 contributionsCrowded. Loud and StinkyPlaya del Carmen has exploded in growth in the last 10-15 years. There is a lot of building, mostly what looks like condos. It is very crowded and loud. Add to that, there is significant beach erosion and a lot of gulfweed. More people on less beach, all playing their own music on portable speakers, many of whom are intoxicated.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 29 May 2024
- Maurica6856 contributionsWatch outIt is a great place lots of bars and restaurants. Very much made for tourism. People are very nice and not to pushy. Lots of streets to walk in and very safe. I love Playa and have many great memories. But seeing there is a place were you can take pictures with wild animals like a baby poema !!!!! On 5th The poor babies couldn’t even walk properly. Looked very drugged up. Ruined my view of the place and will not come back.Visited September 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 3 September 2024

Unfortunately, Playa del Carmen has sold out and become a predominantly private/beach club destination. What used to be a great Cancun alternative (with a more authentic vibe) is now a place where it is almost impossible to find a sliver of beach that has not been taken over by a beach club (think Vegas pool clubs with blaring regggaton, but on the beach) . Being a good sport, I was determined to find a place where I could chill that was open to the public . After reading a few blogs, I checked out 48th st beach( it was as sliver 20x20 feet), downtown by the park (again a slice that was so crowded I left), and a tiny plot I found in front of a dumpster on 30th street. No luck. I ended up leaving and going to Isla Mujeres. If you want to party your face off during the day and pay premium prices to go to the beach by all means come to Playa del Carmen, otherwise I’d go elsewhere. Very sad to see what was once a cool place be ruined.

The prices are the most ridiculous prices you can imagine. They rip you off and expect you to pay prices above and beyond normal prices. The beaches are smelly and sea weedy. No one is about giving tourist a good time , it’s all about what they can squeeze out of you. First and last time going to playa del Carmen.

We came for a week's vacation in the sun in winter. PLAYA DEL CARMEN is less than an hour from Cancun. It's a big city that is best known for its beaches and 5th Avenue. This 3 kilometer long street is filled with bars, restaurants, souvenir shops and clothing stores. It's up to the one who will make the most noise to attract a young and wealthy clientele. In the evening it's a bit debauched and very sexy girls roam the streets. The other thing to do are the beaches, the most beautiful of which is Playacar. The water is warm and transparent. Few algae in January. You have to visit the exterior of this city. Prices are as high as in France.

We came here 4 years ago..we returned because we liked the value, weather and rhe people...unfortunately that's all changed for the worse!
Prices are silly to the point of rip off everywhere you go and tipping is now enforced...
£6 for a beer and anything from £7.50 to over £10 for a weak mojito isn't unusual and there's always a nice fat tip added to your bill with zero option to remove..Cozumel ferry is a total rip off at almost £30 per person for a round trip forn1npwrson..absolutely outrageous scalping of tourists.
We won't be coming back as this isn't the good value destination ot once was, its now a trap for unsuspecting tourists who are ripped off be smiling locals all day long...
A real.pity but it's been ruined by greedy bar and eatery owners who think this is Cancun so change extortionate prices..
Bye bye Mexico, we won't be back

We stayed in Cozumel and took the ferry to Playa del Carmen for several hours. The ferry is $12/each and it runs every two hours. The moment you step off the ferry at Playa del Carmen you’re in a shopping center and beside a public beach. It’s beautiful and the shopping is pretty diverse from local shops, souvenirs, and some chain clothing stores.

Awful,
I was waiting and planning this trip for so long, but when I was finally there everything fell apart, nothing like I expected. Although many people say Quintana Roo is the best, don't get me wrong the place is out of this world, beautiful beaches, and lots of historical and cultural things. However, being in Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cancun, Hotbox, and Conzumel, for almost 3 and a half weeks I realised that everything is a tourist trap. The prices are ridiculous and the worst thing is that you don't get what you pay for and it's a frustration, everyone asks you for tips even if they don't serve you well, or for the most trivial things like asking for a simple beer, the local people are not nice to tourists even if they speak good Spanish, and in general the whole area seems sold out to hotels and franchises so everything is for money. I don't recommend it and it's a shame because as a Latino Mexico has always been at the top of the continent.

I would like to recommend Miguel Angel Caamal Cetzal, a taxi drive in Playa del Carmen. If you staying at the Royal Haciendas he is the BEST for finding all sorts of fun tours! We have used him at least six times to go to the Mayan ruins at Tulum, Coba, Rio Secreto, and a number of above and below ground cenotes. He is absolutely trust-worthy - we have sent our kids with him and never worried. You can find him on WhatsApp under Mexjco Miguel Taxi, or at 529 841 555 077. He will also pick up groups from Cancun if you have at least six people. Seriously, my family love him!

Playa del Carmen is a beautiful place
But the great demand from tourists causes service providers to overwhelm themselves with excessive service costs, poor quality of services and, above all, an imbalance in treatment with national tourists!
Most of them offer all their prices in dollars which is wrong...
The gastronomy leaves something to be desired in quality due to the cost compared to other beach places in Mexico..
The excessive collection of tips is crazy!!
Transportation with very high costs for short distances such as entering Playacar

I read some good reviews of this place, but the first day it got clear I did my research poorly.
Obnoxious loud music all night long, multiple shops with products from China, super annoying salesmen trying to sell you tours or hard drugs and mexican boyfriends!
The beach isn’t pretty, too crowded and all beach clubs facilities look really used.
We found a few good places to eat and drink margaritas. But others were either average in quality, but pricy, or disgusting.
We ended up leaving the place, going to a closed hotel in Cancun area.

Playa del Carmen is one of the places where one arrives and does not want to return, it has an ideal mix between beach (quieter ride) and party atmosphere with 5th Avenue.
Its beaches are beautiful with amazing turquoise and emerald colors, ideal for walking for a long time. Recommended to walk north, either on the beach or on 5th Avenue, until you reach Punta Esmeralda where you can do some snorkeling, visit a free cenote and enjoy its calm waters that connect you to the sea.
Then if you want to enjoy souvenir shopping or items you have more than 3 km of shops on 5th Avenue, where there are all kinds of atmospheres, to enjoy from a coffee in the morning (When it is quieter) to bars for a crazy party during the night. At least one person like me who loves to meet and walk, I didn’t tire of going through morning, afternoon and night, are completely different environments. Also, if you have relatives of new generations who prefer a slightly more relaxed and modern atmosphere of bars you can go to Mall Plaza Americas where they have a variety of shops and places to eat.
If you occupy moving to other places in the Riviera Maya, Cancun or even Bacalar or Chetumal the arrangement of ADO transports in the tourist terminal at 5th Avenue or its alternate terminal, same near 5th Avenue is ideal to move.
Finally, if you are looking for more comfortable places to eat ($) you can find several options about 10th or at the market near the Mayan Portal (Monument) about 10th.

What is the fishing like her? Can you fish from beaches, docks, and or rock structures? If so what bait and what can you catch?
