Was a little disappointed with Riviera Maya, didn't seem to be much going on around our hotel (on a busy highway after you've left the hotel grounds. Playa del carmen was the nearest town which was around 40min drive from our hotel.

We stayed at the Barcelo resort and they have a dolphin aquarium at the resort. That might be a easy way to have a dolphin encounter. I would highly recommend the resort too!!

Bring them to Xcaret. It is a beautiful place very catering to kids. They have many animals there including dolphins. The new kids area will be great for your kids too.
