- Sarka S1 contributionCalakmul breathtakingCalakmul is a breathtaking!!!! Climb on the top of the pyramides, look around, enjoy the view and sounds of the jungle. Come here in the morning to have a space to walk around and rest on the top. The long drive is totally worth it! Be carefull of animals on the road - especially the wild turkey… :)Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 November 2023
- jasonrisley14 contributionsGreat Experience!I loved everything about Calakmul! Staying in Xpujil is close to the site, but it’s still a long trip to get to the ruins. The road to the site from the highway is no joke with its twists, turns and countless potholes. Having a cab for the day with a couple other travelers was perfect. Time to see Calakmul, visit nearby ruins of Balamku (Calakmul closes at 1pm) to “kill time” before seeing the Cueva de los Murcielagos for sundown. Though half the ruins are closed (including the Ball Court), the half that is open is more than enough to make it worth it! All structures can be climbed including the incredible Structures 1 & 2! Great views from the tops of these pyramids. I loved that there’s plenty of shade since I gets hot. Bringing a nice lunch to eat atop the ruins was a great idea!Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 1 January 2024
- PichteeLausanne, Switzerland185 contributionsHurry up to visit this gem before the Maya train is finishedThe road is now paved almost till the end. At the date of writing you do cross the road work of the Maya train. But the drive is much easier than it used to be. It is about an hour of driving in the jungle from the main entrance to the site. There are 3 tickets to buy, two at the main entrance and one at the archeological site. You will find bathrooms and a large parking at the site. There are no places to buy food or drinks. The site is just amazing. You really feel like an explorer because of the few tourists and it is really fun to climb the pyramids. The views are amazing. The site is huge so plan to walk a lot take plenty of water and bug spray. We spend more than 4 hours exploring. Now with the paved road and the train I am afraid that the site will drain tons of tourists. So hurry up if you still want the uniq experience to be (almost) alone in the mayan jungle.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 July 2024

Our guide Jacobo, a bilingual guide who was extremely patient with our children, shared a lot of information with us and helped us locate animals during our tour of the Calakmul archaeological zone. Its a long trip into see these pyramids. Its a 2 and a half hour drive from Xpujil which is the town with the nearest accommodation. But the good news is that the road has recently been repaired so there is only one pothole and its an easy drive. You have to drive slowly around 40 km's per hours for about 60 kms but that's because there are a reasonably number of wild turkeys on the side of the road which you might otherwise hit. The site is massive as are the pyramids and you can climb all the way to the top. We didn't see any large tour groups it was mainly small groups of 5-6 people with a guide so the site was peaceful and not too crowded. We went early in the morning to try and see some wildlife as well and were lucky enough to see a troupe of monkeys but that was it apart from the colourful turkeys The bat cenote is worthwhile seeing so you could also time your trip to see that as well - around 5.30pm when we went in March. If you have the time and you want to see spectular pyramids in peace and quiet it is well worth it!

Amazing ruins! The main plaza has 3 temples which you can climb to the top. They give you a superb view over the jungle. Note that the path to the ruins is 60km long and you'll need to pay 3 small fees.
We have read that some people found the road a bit harsh. But they were fixing the potholes. As for now (24th of januari 2010) up untill the 40km mark, the road is fine. We bumped into some maintenance workers in the last 20 km. So that will be fixed soon.
Drive slow. We saw a lot of wildlife on the road!

A lot was closed due to Covid restrictions but I would not want to have missed it. Stunning 360 view of the jungle and the only site we were able to climb 3 of the ruins on site including the biggest one.
The road to the site was newly paved 2-3 years ago. No problem to drive independently.
If you want to have a guide I recommend organising one beforehand as there are none on site and English speaking guides are hard to get by. Bring food and water, nothing is sold on site.

We stayed at the "Puerta Calakmul" hotel for two nights in November 2023 to visit the ruins in Calakmul.
The complex is breathtaking. It is the second largest Mayan complex in the Americas with over 6,000 structures, not all of which have even been uncovered yet. Since the route there is quite arduous, there are very few tourists. That is why it is probably (currently) possible to climb all the pyramids and complexes. The view from the two highest pyramids (structures I and II) is simply amazing, so the effort is worth it. If you want to see one of the most impressive Mayan sites far away from the hustle and bustle of the Tulum or Chichén Itzá complexes, you can't avoid Calakmul.
Since the Maya Train is currently being built and the path to the Calakmul ruins is also being significantly drilled, it could still be an insider tip. I can imagine that the park will change quite a bit once the new hotel is built (e.g. climbing the objects could also be banned). So if you want to come here in the next few months: definitely do it!
The area extends over various facilities such as residential complexes, the Acropolis, the main square and the pyramids (the Gran Acropolis was not accessible in November 2023). Since the facility is in the middle of the jungle, you also share it with the corresponding residents - so you not only hear howler monkeys, but also see groups of monkeys jumping around in the trees. We were among the last visitors and ended up having almost the entire facility to ourselves, accompanied only by the monkeys - an amazing experience that will stay with you forever.
Here are some more information and tips about the ruins of Calakmul (as of November 2023):
- The entrance on the main road opens at 5:30 a.m. and you can still get in around 11 a.m. at the latest. The park closed again in November 2023 at 1 p.m. (but we weren't outside until 2 p.m.)
- Due to construction work and the general condition of the roads, the 60 km drive to the actual entrance to the ruins takes 2 hours rather than 1 hour
- The route is doable with any rental car in dry weather. If it has rained for a long time, it could be tricky, as parts of the route are currently being rebuilt and there is muddy ground. It might be worth asking on site.
- You pay 3 different entrance fees, two at the starting point on the main road, one in the park itself. Card payment was not possible. (I think it was 180 pesos per person in the end)
- There are almost no tourists, but also almost no infrastructure in the park (toilets available). Bring enough water and food with you, the area is very extensive!

If you are up for a trip of an hour through a small road through the jungle you get to the most spectaculair Maya complex Mexico has to offer. Climb the pyramids and enjoy amazing views and go for a walk with a guide on one of the many nature trails and be amazed. VERY much worth the trip!

The ruins and the museum onsite are amazing. When we went, the site was not very busy but this will soon change. There is a newly constructed concrete road leading all the way up to the site so you can now easily drive yourself. Surprisingly, they are also building a hotel in the Bioreserve, which should be completed shortly. With all these changes, as well as the Mayan Train up and running, this site will be very busy with tourists. It will be a very different experience going forward.
Although you can walk around the site easily on your own, having a good guide can provide a richer, cultural experience, providing the information and background to make it come to life, which we experienced in Palenque. We therefore wanted to find a knowledgeable guide for Calakmul. Initially we contacted Abel (WhatsApp +52 983 156 9248) who speaks very good English and from reading his reviews, would have been excellent but we were not able to connect in time. We recommend co-ordinating the guide a few days earlier and not the day prior. We ended up hiring Humberto (WhatsApp +52 983 102 5699) who we found out when we met, spoke limited English so we did not get as much info as we would have liked, so would recommend him only to those fluent in Spanish.

Saying that Calakmul is breathtaking will not give this place enough justice.
It has beautifully preserved ruins, clad in vegetation, which gives them this mysterious and adventurous look. Waliking amids the jungle and discovering all this ancient places is totally a different experience compared to any other ruin. The site is also so huge and vast , that is likely that you will see very few tourists even in crowded periods. The site is reachable by a 40km bumpy road, which will take you 1h and a half from the main road. Be prepares to stay there at least 3 hours and bring lots of water. You will need them.
A bit off hand but totally worth it

We visited Calakmul from Bacalar. It's quite a journey and it took us 12 hours. We left at 6 o'clock in the morning and had breakfast at a gas station at a quarter to 7 in Xpujil (note: it is an hour earlier in Campeche). Then it is another 45 minutes to the entrance of the road that goes to Calakmul. This is then 60km through the jungle at an average speed of 30km per hour (due to the poor road surface and holes in the road). Finally at the architectural site it is quiet in terms of tourists and you walk to the various buildings via a well-constructed path. Shortly after entering we saw the first howler monkeys climbing over us through the trees. All the different buildings are worth seeing and buildings 1 and 2 in particular are fun to climb on top and enjoy the great views. In the end we were there for three hours and we were able to see everything (with the exception of a small part that was closed due to construction). The reason that it took us longer than it should normally take is that they are currently working on the Tren Maya along the entire route from Bacalar to Calakmul and therefore a lot of trucks are driving around, causing a lot of delays. All in all very worthwhile!

Superb excursion to the Calakmul reserve! 🌳🐒
Luis from Secretoo was a fabulous guide with an infectious joie de vivre and a passion. He took the time to show us the animals in the jungle and share his knowledge with us, which we really appreciated.
We liked this tour, and we recommend it 100% because even if it means driving (60km of track to get in and out of the reserve with work in progress, pay attention to the schedules 🚧), you might as well do the full activity with a guide.
10/10 for Luis 👍 Thank you for this experience!

Our visit to Calakmul was extraordinary.
Our guide Jacobo, a bilingual guide who was extremely patient with our children, shared a lot of information with us and helped us locate animals during our tour of the Calakmul archaeological zone. We started our tour from the hotel to the archaeological site at 6:00 a.m. After an hour on the road and having seen different birds, we arrived at the archaeological zone.
During the first 1000 meters before reaching the first structures, we were able to learn a lot about different plants and insects that we found during the walk. We heard and saw different birds as well and we were excited when, thanks to the sound of their movements, our guide directed our attention to the tops of the trees to delight us with the spider monkeys.
Upon arriving at the structures, we received extensive information about them and the history of the place. Before climbing the first structures, we heard the sound of the howler monkeys and enjoyed watching them. We climbed the highest structures of the site at our pleasure and were enraptured by the beautiful view from the top of the structures, that enormous green expanse that seems to have no end.
Calakmul exceeded our expectations. It is true that there is too much construction work going on around it, but the site is still fabulous, very beautiful.
For the children it was extremely enriching, seeing them climb the structures and ask questions to our guide was comforting.

Merci d’avance

Je ne crois pas commun. Quelqu'un devrait parler un peu français.
Avec les animaux, le risque est minime :)
Bon voyage!

Hi E2401, what was the name of the cabanas where you stayed and roughly how much per night. Cheers!
Written 13 February 2017
Hi Dave - it was at the akalki spa in Bacalar, a good 2 hours drive. There are towns nearby Calakmul which will provide cheap lodging as opposed to Akalki which was 200$ per night dependant on time of year (well worth it though!)
