Nohoch Mul is the largest pyramid located in the Cobá Archaeological Zone. It’s name in Mayan means “great mound”; it is also known as Ixmoja. It was built between 250 and 550 AD, but the temple on top of the pyramid was built much later (between 1250 and 1539 AD). It is actually the second largest pyramid in the Yucatan (the largest is called Calakmul, which is 7 hours to the south). It stands 42 meters (138 feet) tall.
Many reviewers gave this pyramid and the Cobá Archaeological Zone less than 5 stars, mainly because you used to be allowed to climb Nohoch Mul, but no longer are allowed to. Really? These are the same folks who give fish & chips restaurants 5 stars. Keep in mind that you are not allowed to climb the Great Pyramid in Egypt either.

This is a Mayan Ruin that is about 100km (about 62 miles for those from the U.S.) from Tulum. It takes a little longer than an hour to get there simply because you do have to pass through a couple of small towns and you need to slow down. We parked along the road before the attraction so we didn't have to pay to park. Entrance to the ruins is about 57 pesos or about $5.00 US. This is well worth that kind of money. We opted to walk in to ruins which is about 2km (1.2 Miles...again for those of us from the U.S.) If it's not that hot, it's not too bad as most of the trip is flat and well shaded. Also it enables you to see some of the individual ruins along the way.
When you get to the actual temple it looks a bit daunting to climb to the top but if you take it in small increments it's not too bad. The dicey part is coming down but they have installed a rope that runs down the middle of the climb that helps you to hold on and prevents the panic of falling all the way down. This is one of the last Mayan ruins that they let you climb on so I hope for your sake if you decide to go that you can still do it.
On the way back, we opted for the bicycle taxis which was 100 pesos for two (about $9.00 plus tip) but well worth it considering the hike up and the climb to the top of the pyramid. We didn't take a guide because we had other things we wanted to do but I think in retrospect it would have been a good thing. All in all, I think this is something that almost everyone would enjoy seeing.

Absolutely loved the adventure of climbing to the top of Nohoch Mul pyramid! We went on a sunset tour and it was very hot but less people around. At the top you can recover from the climb in the shade of the trees and take in the amazing scenery before you. There is not much to see of the ruins at the top, but the view is spectacular and so worth the climb. There were also dragonflies and swifts flying around our heads.
We rode the bikes on our tour and it's the best way to get around and see the other ruins near the pyramid!
My boyfriend proposed at the top of the pyramid and it was incredible! Such a wonderful place ❤️

We visited the Mayan Ruins in Coba, Mexico where the tallest temple in the Yucatan, Nohoch Mul is located. This is an easy drive from Playa del Carmen if you want to rent a car. However, there are tours and taxis if that is more to your liking. There is a 100 pesos charge for parking (if you need to park a rent car) and the entrance fee is 57 pesos for each person. You do need pesos to buy the entrance ticket (Mexican law) but USD works everywhere else. There is also food, water, and souvenirs available at the entrance to the ruin. We opted for guide (750 pesos) which we thought was worth the investment. We also rented the bicycle taxis (100 pesos for two persons) which I would highly recommend as it is about 2 kilometers (one way) to the temple. This site is one of the oldest Mayan Villages dating from 100 BC to 1450 AD and is similar to the Mayan ruins in Tik'al. It is also shaded by the Jungle flora which makes learning about the various structures easy compared to bearing the direct Sun in almost every place in Chichen Itza. We saw stone tablets with hieroglyphics, part of an ancient road said to be 100 kilometers long, a watchtower, church, temples, etc. We also learned about how trees and seashells were used as a source of paint for the structures. According to the guide only about 5% of this site has be excavated so this will continue to evolve and improve. At this time, one may still climb Nohoch Mul and there is a refreshment stand near the temple. The steps to the temple were much larger than those on El Castillo. The view from the top of the temple was incredible.

Nohoch Mul is located at the Mayan ruins at Coba, about one and one-half hours from Playa Del Carmen. There are many ruins to explore here and it's located in the jungle so you are shaded much of the time, unlike Tulum or Chichen Itza. The main pyramid is about one mile from the entrance. Renting a bicycle is very inexpensive and lets you cover much more in less time. If you prefer, hire one of the pedicab drivers for a little more. Nohoch Mul is three times the height of Kukulcan at Chichen Itza and you can still climb it. Not so at Chichen Itza since they ended access in 2006. There is a refreshment stand located within the site. Wear comfortable shoes... there's a lot of walking and climbing. Guides are available, for a fee, to explain the history and culture. A zip-line across from the park entrance soars across the lake. But I skipped that and preferred to spend my time visiting the ruins.

This snorkel sight is endorsed by National Geographic and rightly so. Snorkelled the cenote as part of our Jungle Maya Tour with Alltournative Adventures. Our guide Diego and site were fantastic. Snorkels and masks were available, however we opted to use our own. Water very cool and refreshing in summer. Bats, stalactites and stalagmites. Our guides lit under water with flashlights. About a 30 minute smorkel through caves, wish it could have been longer. Very unique and cool experience! Not to be missed on your Riviera Maya vacation.

The pyramid is the tallest in the Yucatan Peninsula and for now, tourists can still climb it. It's in much need for restoration, though.

The pyramid, which stands in a clearing, is huge and measures 42 m - a very impressive sight - since the pandemic, you are no longer allowed to go up it
