Idyllic Interlude
Oct. 2021
My friend and I had a perfectly lovely interlude at this idyllic ranch near San Cristóbal. We stayed in the cottage, which was comfortable and roomy and very well equipped. We neglected to buy food on the way there (duh) but were able to purchase beans, rice, salsa, and corn from the indigenous women nearby and had deliciously simple meals. They also made us fresh tortillas. Stephanie is an awesome person with beautiful energy and she took us out for a horseback ride, matching us up with just the right horses. My friend had never ridden before and is past 70 years of age and did great. There are cats, dogs, chickens and sheep as well as horses at the ranch. Mufasa the kitty spent a lot of time on my lap as he recognized a cat lady! We did some birdwatching and hiking too. I highly recommend El Rancho Evergreen to anyone seeking some quiet communion with nature. I hope to stay in touch with Stephanie—she is one of those people you just adore immediately.

Unique farm & horseback riding experience
Oct. 2021
If you love horses and/or nature, I'd highly recommend a visit to the Evergreen Ranch. It's a beautiful place with even more beautiful horses. You can stay in your own lovely house or choose a bunkbed in the shared housing part. Stefanie, the owner, is lovely and takes great care of her guests and her animals. I stayed for two nights (wish I could have stayed a few more nights) and went horseback riding both days – the surrounding forest and nature is gorgeous and it's super fun to ride around in the area. They cater to beginners and advanced riders. As semi-experienced myself I got to trot and gallop a bunch on both rides and Stefanie was attentive throughout. It's kids friendly too and they have other animals: the cutest cows, sheep, chickens, dogs and cats. I got to help with feeding the horses in the morning and letting them in and out of the fields which was fun too. The atmosphere is super relaxed and you get to take your time. Stefanie and her family have built a beautiful life on the farm and share a bit of that with you. If I'm ever in the area again, I'll most definitely return to the farm.

Real connections
Jan. 2021
If what makes you happy about traveling is to find real connections, "EverGreen Ranch" is the place for you. And I don't mean it in an holistic or commercial way. I'm talking about meeting people that approach life in such a passionate, simple and generous way that it's contagious. Sam is absolutely amazing. It was very inspiring to see his gentle and loving connection with the animals. Luckily, I didn't have any previous experience with horses so I could enjoy the unique opportunity to learn from him. It was something very special that I will cary with me for the rest of my life. Stephanie is the perfect host, she is a sweet and strong woman that is always shining around and making sure everybody is well taken care of. I enjoyed a lot our great long conversations over breakfast at their house. I stayed at the dorms and everything was great. So if you are a solo traveler on a budget like me, feel encouraged to stay here as well. A perfect place to relax surrounded by animals, nature and beautiful people. My recommendations: don't miss the sunset and bring a bottle of wine to drink by the fireplace at night. Enjoy your stay!!!!! I'm definitely planning to go back =)

Literally LIFE CHANGING
Jan. 2021
I spent three days and three nights at El Rancho Evergreen and it was 100% the best thing I have ever done. It was by far my favourite 3 days I've ever had on a trip (and I've been travelling for 2 years accumulatively full time). The horses, the ranch, the accommodation, the people, the owners, the animals EVERYTHING was perfect. I always walk into something with no expectation because I want to appreciate everything and expect nothing but wow, even if I had gone in with the highest expectations; they would have been met and exceeded. The horses and all the animals are also in such good condition and the whole experience was life changing. I'm already planning my return!

Nice birding trip
Oct. 2020
We spent a morning doing birding in the Ranch. The attention was excelent. The bird activity was low because it was a cold morning, but we expect to have a better chance in the future

A Magical Equine Visit
Mar. 2020 • Friends
Sam & Stefanie are the most incredible hosts — I would recommend staying with them for at least 2 nights to make the most of your experience. Beware, the road to get to the ranch is VERY bumpy & your taxi will take some time to get there but it felt pretty safe — best to make the trip during daylight hours. Stefanie greeted us at the gate and helped us bring our luggage to the Farmhouse where we stayed (it included a wood-burning stove, kitchen, toilet & a lofty/spacious bunk bed setup). Sam is a true “horse-whisperer” type & absolutely full of so much wisdom. Myself, my mom & another visitor Elna went out to the pasture to bring the horses into the stable. This was honestly one of the most magical moments to witness — around 8 or so horses came bounding across the rolling meadow at Sam’s call & trotted happily down the street all the way to their respective boxes for dinner. He started us out that evening with an intro to his version of natural horsemanship, including meeting the individual horses on the ground for over an hour & walking with them around the paddock/ring area. It was quite windy so my mount Shiraz was pretty spooky but I did get the chance to ride her bareback for a while & practice using my seat correctly for cues with Sam’s instruction. I really appreciate the fact that Sam does not use bits on his horses — they seem much happier for it. & they are all so healthy & robust with shiny coats. I trotted the roundpen for a little bit & Sam said I was ready for a trail ride in the morning. I went out with him around 8am, not knowing what to expect. He said stand in the saddle while galloping, hold on with your knees & use your arms to push off if your horse gets too close to a tree. And off we went! I have been riding for 22 years (including competing on the hunter-jumper circuit as a horse owner) & I have NEVER experienced true exhilaration like this!!! It was literally the wildest ride of my life & I am so thankful to Sam for just trusting me. This is the exact opposite of any paid “trail ride” stable you will find in the US. This is true freedom & learning to think like a horse. I cannot wait until I am able to return. I must mention that Stephanie cooks the most incredible meals & you should certainly sit with them for a meal or two because it is the most fascinating dinner time conversation! Everything about this experience is completely sublime ~ it’s the best thing you can do in Mexico, whether an equestrian or not. Note: they also have lots of dogs, cats & a large cow & bull.

Amazing day in the nature with wonderful horses and a lovely family
Feb. 2020
I spent a day at the Rancho Evergreen and it was exactly what I've been looking for: nice people who care about their animals, about nature, about your wellbeing... and the food is delicious! :) It's definitely not one of those "hop-on-hop-off" horse ride experiences. You meet "your" horse, spend time with it and the ride is adapted to your riding skills. I definitely recommend staying at this place if you want to spend a day with horses or just in the nature to disconnect a little. Can be easily reached by public transport and taxi.

Amazing!
Feb. 2020 • Couples
Thank you team! We had such a great time. Sam and the horses catered to our higher level of experience and we were allowed the freedom to canter and gallop in the forest which was beautiful. The food was amazing and other staff were lovely and helpful. Wish we could have stayed longer! Hope to visit again someday
