Very interesting ruins, connected in time to Monte Alban but not visited in numbers at all. We took a collectivo to the site but didn't arrange any transport back down the mountain. I was already too hot from exploring the ruins and we had no...More

If you want to see preColumbian ruins, without the crowds of Monte Alban, you can't do better than Atzompa. Just a few miles west of Oaxaca, it is easily reached by collectivo taxi from the city. Beautifully restored and maintained, with breathtaking views of the...More

The 3 of us hired a taxi and went here after stopping at the amphitheater for some pictures of the city. Except for 2 others, we were the only people at the entire site. This was on a Friday around noon. It's a relatively recent...More

Far less busy than Monte Alban, the zone arqueologica de atzompa has fascinating ruins and a restored ball court. Take a taxi to the site, or (if you like climbing hills on bikes) rent a mountain bike (Pedro Martinez) and ride out.

I had been living in Oaxaca for 2 years before I had ever heard of Atzompa, so I assumed they were small and just a quick visit. Let me tell you how incorrect that assumption was. While not quite as large as Monte Alban, they...More

If you went to Monte Alban you probably saw Atzompa from a distance - another hilltop archaeological site. It is easy to get to once you know how. It opened in 2012 so isn't as well known or visited as other ruins in the area....More
