A friend recommended this market as its a collective and all the items are made locally. They don't pressure you and it's not too busy so you can actually browse.

Most of the other sites in town with the word "artisan" in the name are really just tourist trap sort of stores. This place, however, is different. It's a bit south of the heart of Oaxaca in a grittier, off the beaten path area. It's perfectly safe, though, and you can absolutely walk there from wherever you're staying. Inside this... More

Half the fun of this market is chatting up the salespeople. There are lots of repetitions among the stalls, but you can find small hand-painted bowls for $2. I bought a colorful woven notebook cover with spiral notebook included for $9 that is a conversation piece at meetings back home. Well worth browsing for a half-hour, and an easy walk... More

Not being in the market for any of the products being sold, i breezed through the Artesannes fairly quickly. If you're in the market for this type of souvenir, this is your place.

Excellent variety of handicrafts - some nicer than others. Take your time (don't rush through the market) go from stall to stall and chat with the stall owners. You can bargain but not too much as some artisans take offense. Great selection of embroidered blouses (check finish, turn them inside out - talking from experience). Even if the embroidery is... Great location for textiles, embroidered blouses, coyotepec pottery, leather goods and rugs. Prices here are much better than the shops in town, so make sure to acquaint yourself with the costs of items here first before Not such a great selection of alebije animal carvings, as the ones I saw were of moderate to low quality. There are a few... More

I started at this market on my souvenir shopping day, and I wish I had spent more time here. Quality varies between vendors, so it takes some time to sort through stacks of goods and select quality pieces. I ended up purchasing some embroidered pillows and a beautiful woven scarf. Prices are lower than the more curated shops in the... More

I was searching for embroidered fabrics... After pricing many different stores all over Oaxaca, on my last day, I returned to the Mercado de Artesanias because the merchant's prices were less expensive. It's a great place to find a beautiful selection of textiles and clothes and the prices are fair.

The crafts were largely similar at most of the stalls. Cute small things but definitely not the fine craft of artisans. My daughter and I liked getting some small purses, Mexican shopping bags and the like but not a super interesting artisan market. We saw much nicer things (though more expensive) in shops to the west of Santo Domingo and... More

I love this market for embroidered blouses and bedspreads. It is best to go there rested or you can get dizzy looking at all the vibrant colors, styles and selections. During my three visits to Oaxaca, it is there where I go first and last. I have had great success in having a king bedspread shipped inexpensively and reasonably fast... More
