There are T-shirts and crafts geared toward tourists, but also veggies, fried grasshoppers, cheese, toys, sweets, coffee, things that Oaxacanoes buy. In the adjacent market to the south, stalls of smoking meats, bread, mini-restaurants. Today I was at a restaurant and my tlayuda meal came on a piece of brick-colored paper. It seems like it might work for drawings. I asked... More

A great place to try some real local cuisine such as mole negro con pollo, chicken with chocolate spicy sauce, or chillies stuffed with cheese, yum.

We loved every market we visited in Oaxaca. Often the simpler textiles and crafts found in the artisan specialty stores can also be found here for much less, but also less intricate. Although there were some amazing rebozos-- hard to resist buying all kinds of things. Be prepared to bargain some.

If you're looking for a peak into the real Oaxaca, be sure to employ a guide to take you through this incredible market. We enjoyed the unusual offerings including chili-flavored fried grasshoppers, local incense and chocolates. Absolutely not to be missed!

This market is fun, crowded with people and merchandise from clothing to peppers and spices to chili crickets - if you're squeamish try the tiny ones - more crunchy and spicy than anything else. ;)

This was an experience to go through this market. It is a mixture of goods and food with places to eat within. You can buy spices, food, clothes and chocolate covered crickets.
