Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

With kind of a "drab exterior" to see from outside, I would just say that it was a good decision on my part to enter and not to skip this cathedral (actually the second time around when staying just nearby and the place closed on the first time likely due to late hours) for its interior not just of ornateness but of that in a "fairly confined" floor area (yes its two length-sides quite fully occupied by shrines of various beauty) and where actually the "most memorable" was not the main altar but the two big shrines or secondary altars (one on each side of the main one) with their "golden faces" from top to bottom. And also enjoyable at the time was seeing a group of about 10 likely a school band playing music in front of the altar and also some friendly nuns offering like token mementos for donation (which I just gladly did without taking any of those mementos really just for the "impressive aura" inside this cathedral).
If not staying in the neighborhood like I did though, my suggestion is to stop by this cathedral at just about a 5-minute walk from the "main plaza" Zocalo (from its northwest corner) after about half a day on & around that "greatly spacious" plaza with Catedral Metropolitana & Palacio Nacional on two sides of the Plaza (both with "beautiful elaborations" inside specifically the ornate altars of the Cathedral & the mesmerizing murals of the Palace) where along that short walk is also another "smaller rectangular" plaza (actually right before this cathedral) with a "vibrant atmosphere" due to a row of outdoor vendors of books & such along one of the two length-sides and a sizeable tent market along the other.

This is actually the 3rd church built on this place, so while the area is very old, the church itself is relatively modern (about 300 years old) and it has a lot of fine decorations. It's also located on a well preserved historic plaza.

The Santo Domingo is one of the oldest and best preserved of the large churches in downtown Mexico City. Step in and another world awaits from the noise and crowds outside. This is the church used for many important occasions by Mexican government and cultural figures, and when you visit you will see why.

This church is one of the oldest in Mexico City. It was built by the Dominicans. The altarpiece is magnificent and very well kept.
It is located very close to the Zocalo.

This is a nice church in the Santo Domingo square in the center of the city. Not as big as the cathedral but beautiful too.

The church is interesting and the square in very beautiful. The place around is having a bad smell because of the homeless around.

On our recent tour of central Mexico city, we visited the many churches near the Zocalo and nearby Templo Mejor in downtown Mexico City. Santo Domingo is another church, one of many, in this area. Church of Santo Domingo and its Plaza are located three blocks north of the Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral. Not as large as some of its neighbors but nice, It does have a lot of competition though.

Small but very interesting church, it was very quiet when we visited that it invites you to think about your personal life and it transmits that good vibe and feeling to you, I snapped some pictures and enjoyed my time here.

This is a pretty church but quite small and not much to look at, compared to others nearby. Worth spending a few minutes inside if you are passing but not amazing enough to make a special trip.
