The area
Neighbourhood: Coyoacán
Once you step into Coyoacán (“Land of the Coyotes”) you'll find picturesque parks and cantinas that will transport you back to the colonial era thanks to the brick and stone details of the area. Iconic writers such as Trotsky and great painters like Frida Kahlo seeked refuge and inspiration in this area, and you can see the unique spirit of this neighborhood reflected in its colorful market where nieves, sopes and all kinds of traditional 'antojitos' are a must try. Restaurants and cafés throughout its peaceful paved streets contain traditional but unique murals and decorations, where one can enjoy a mezcal at noon or the best churros with a cup of coffee.

In 1934 this church was declared a National Monument. The interior far outshines the exterior and is one of the most beautiful and oldest Catholic Churches in Mexico. The ornate altar, gorgeous archways and ceiling frescos are magnificent to see. I rarely will pass up going into a church as they all have so much to offer in beauty. This one was built on top of Aztec ruins and there was a huge Aztec celebration going on outside with feathered dancers and music and blessings.

Located over the south side of Coyoacán's Plaza Hidalgo, the plain façade is an example of the Herrerian style, characterised by clean geometric lines and almost entirely absent ornamentation. A hard-to-read inscription in Latin, above the door, would translate roughly as “There is none other but a house of God, and this a gate of the heavens.” The interior is heavily decorated in the baroque style. Once you go out take a left and enter the quiet cloister. If in need of a restroom, they have a public one for ten pesos.

This church was begun in 1560 and finished between 1798 and 1804. The architecture is Romanesque/Baroque and the interior highly decorated in the Rococo style. Lots of gold and gold leaf trim, huge paintings, and a niche for offerings (milagros) for sickness, aches, and pains. A side chapel has an elaborate altar and a huge gold monstrance for some holy relic (I was told it was Communion bread).

One of the most unassuming church's from the outside, but inside was stunning. We entered via the side door to a beautiful courtyard. But let's step back a bit.
This place was run by the Franciscan friars. Rumour has it that the floor is made of cement with a red quarry facade, carved volcanic stone walls and a shrine decorated with gold plate. Over four centuries the church was rebuilt and remodeled however, the exterior and interior maintain their integrity.
Inside, there is a chapel on the left side called Chapel of the Blessed Sacrement. Next to that chapel is Capilla de as Virgenes where every Holy Week they pray the rosary befor ethe holy burial.
We were fortunate enough to see a few young babies being blessed in the church on this Sunday morning. Plus someone having a good nap in one of the pews.
A beautiful place to explore and just the stained glass alone is enough to catch your attention.
The courtyard is bright and sunny with a lovely fountain in the middle. It is free to enter.
Outside are vendors with balloons and local crafts but they aren’t pushy which was refreshing.
Wheelchair friendly. Kid friendly.

A beautiful old church in the Coyoacán district. A simple exterior but beautiful inside, the ceiling being particularly attractive.

The evening sparkled with Christmas lights and voices of joy as families celebrated in the plaza. Spent precious moments with family members shopping artisan shops, experienced an outdoors performance, and enjoyed the sounds of Spanish conversations during the festivities.

This is one of the first churches in the American continent. It is a baroque church from the colonial period. It belongs to the Franciscans.
The frescoes are magnificent and also the gilded altar.
It is a nice place to pray!

If you visit Coyoacan, spare your time to visit inside the Church. The outside look is of regular church, but inside has very good design and detail. It is open to public to view and to attend the service (if you get there during the service time). Good place to see and good place to get away from a little busy Coyoacan.

Parroquia de San Juan Bautista is the largest church in the Coyoacán neighborhood and the centerpiece around Plaza Hidalgo. The interior is typical but the leafy courtyard is a nice place to take a break in peace.

We loved this church which is next to the main plaza in Coyoacan, we watched a couple getting married and loved it. We recommend to take pics of the architectural towers and the paintings. They sell rosaries outside the door, great for pics.
