Recommended at our hotel, as well as by several guides, as the best place to look for souvenirs. Most were priced at $30 USD or less. No hassle vendors, felt very safe. I didn't try to negotiate, although several vendors offered to reduce price if I purchased more than one item (w/o my prompting). Easy walk from the Historic District.

Great mercado for artisan souvenirs. Perhaps a bit pricey compared to others but it’s very safe, vendors are kind, and not very busy during the day so you have lots of room to move about. I didn’t try to haggle, I didn’t buy anything expensive to begin with, but maybe you’ll have luck. Definitely worth checking out, there’s lots to see.

Fifty years ago as post graduate students at UNAM, we were referred to a jeweler at La Ciudadela who made us our wedding bands. Alas, he’s long gone but there is so much to see and buy. My wife bought a pillow cover and some placemats and I bought a well made MEXICO cap for $8:00. The selection is good and prices are reasonable.

Visited the Mercado on a Sunday morning. Crowd was light. Vibe was super chill. Quality handmade products from all over Mexico. Vendors were friendly, not too pushy. All took credit card but would give 10% or so discount for cash/pesos. All were happy to share where their products originated and what was hand made and what was more mass produced. Don’t expect bargains, but prices were fair imo. There is an automated cash machine in the Mercado if you need it. Really fun place to shop for artisan products. Definitely recommend Sunday morning with such few people … made it very relaxing.
