About
The stalls here are famous for selling folk art and handmade handicrafts. It’s easy to spot hand-embroidered pillow covers, colorful Otomi textiles, and pre-Columbian clay artworks. The intricate lacquerware and Lucha libre shirts—not your typical souvenir staples—also make great gifts. Plus, you won’t have to travel to Oaxaca or Chihuahua, as the items here are brought in from all over Mexico. When it’s meal time, break up your shopping and recharge at the cantina in the middle of the market. Grab a few margaritas and dig into traditional Mexican fare before resuming your bargain hunt. – Tripadvisor

    Nice market for souvenirs.
Recommended at our hotel, as well as by several guides, as the best place to look for souvenirs. Most were priced at $30 USD or less. No hassle vendors, felt very safe. I didn't try to negotiate, although several vendors offered to reduce price if I purchased more than one item (w/o my prompting). Easy walk from the Historic District.

    Worth checking out
Great mercado for artisan souvenirs. Perhaps a bit pricey compared to others but it’s very safe, vendors are kind, and not very busy during the day so you have lots of room to move about. I didn’t try to haggle, I didn’t buy anything expensive to begin with, but maybe you’ll have luck. Definitely worth checking out, there’s lots to see.

Our Last Visit was 50 years ago
Fifty years ago as post graduate students at UNAM, we were referred to a jeweler at La Ciudadela who made us our wedding bands. Alas, he’s long gone but there is so much to see and buy. My wife bought a pillow cover and some placemats and I bought a well made MEXICO cap for $8:00. The selection is good and prices are reasonable.

Chill and relaxing shopping on Sunday morning
Visited the Mercado on a Sunday morning. Crowd was light. Vibe was super chill. Quality handmade products from all over Mexico. Vendors were friendly, not too pushy. All took credit card but would give 10% or so discount for cash/pesos. All were happy to share where their products originated and what was hand made and what was more mass produced. Don’t expect bargains, but prices were fair imo. There is an automated cash machine in the Mercado if you need it. Really fun place to shop for artisan products. Definitely recommend Sunday morning with such few people … made it very relaxing.

It was not very crowded so i guess we let our guard down. My husband was pick pocketed. He should have known better as it was a typical scam. Man and women sprayed cream on him and then helped clean it off while at the same time cleaning out his pockets.
They got all of his credit cards. By the time we got back to the hotel and called it in they had already charged over $1000. So beware !
We went here to shop as it was supposedly safer than other areas. Lesson...nowhere is safe...especially in Mexico.

I like the Talavera pottery and hand blown glass work. The stuff they sell is very beautiful, but some of the stuff is very over-priced compared to the Coyoacan arts and crafts market. Same items in Coyoacan are half the price than in this market. However I did not see a lot of Talavera pottery at the market in Coyoacan. Tip; don't buy from the first vendors you see something you really like, because you're going to see the same items for less than you bought it for as you walk around some more, it always happens. 🙄

We did not get many recommendations for this place, a little off the beaten path... but it was wonderful!!! Get away from all the hawkers at the touristy spots, here you can find some real artisans and their crafts, from woven good, wood carving, and much more. Worth the visit. We found most of our gifts to take home here.

La Ciudadela market was the perfect place to stock up on affordable souvenirs. A lot of merchants sell the same or similar items, so it's easy to get a fair price or get just the color/size that you need. My daughter loves Mexican blouses and was able to buy quite a few at reasonable prices.

Tip: It's easy to get lost or separated with a large group. In the main area of the market, note the overhead signs indicating the number of the aisle or "Pasilla". Our large family agreed to stick to one long aisle at a time, and this worked out well. Plus we told the children just to stand in the middle of the aisle if they became separated and wait until someone found them.

For more original items and handmade art (at affordable prices), visit the Saturday art and vendor fairs at San Angel and Coyoacan. Also my favorite souvenirs were the miniature oil paintings done by an artist on the big path to Chapultepec zoo. Only two for 100 pesos. My husband saw them later and wished I had bought more!

Cultural experience but expected better. It was a fascinating time to wander between the many stalls selling everything from masks to embroidered quilts. However, the quality of the items was not as good as I had hoped for - mostly cheap trinkets. As for the items we liked (beaded sculptures) they were overpriced. Worth checking out if you have available time, but go for the cultural experience ! Great to buy cheaper souvenirs and cultural clothing.

We waited to do some major shopping here, and found the usual things that you see on the street at higher prices, and these guys were not willing to deal. This is not quality goods, just souvenirs to take home and a few things for the kids. Even the little kids dresses were cheaper on the street......i hate feeling ripped off!!!!
However, with our perseverance we did find one guy who was helpful and willing to deal! Everyone deserves to make a living, but the market is where you deal and should not be more than the street vendors.

Worth a visit for local goods. The street side had guitars for sale! The indoor stalls had all sorts of souvenirs, clothing and accessories. I was looking for inexpensive leather products and found a great selection. Don't forget to bargain! I also recommend earlier in the day (market opens around 10am) to avoid crowds.

American tourist trap.
If you're looking for mass-produced 'souvenirs' that are a little overpriced, this is the place! I remember going to this place when I was little and loving it, but now that I have some knowledge and life experience I see it for what it is.

Not saying it's a bad place, but you can find better and cheaper souvenirs in other places. Also, another tip if you're a tourist, try to walk a few blocks away if you're getting a taxi. My family's house is an 80 peso ($4 trip) away. Tried to get a taxi right outside of the place and every one that stopped tried to charge us 200 pesos instead. Sure it's not a lot, but it's the principle of the matter that they'll take advantaage. So just a friendly warning :)

This is the place to get your souvenirs, eat some yummy treats, and take in many sights! The Ciudadela is a short walk from the Historic Center. It has a multitude (to say the least) of vendors who sell a variety of things: classic souvenir items, textiles, jewelry, snacks, clothing, and so much more. The complex itself can be a bit tricky to navigate (we got turned around in the "aisles"many times). We never felt "lost", but you probably won't remember which way is which! Also, you may need multiple visits in case you aren't sure what to get the first time around! Definitely a must-do!

This was a nice market to check out and convenient for buying crafts and so forth as souvenirs. There’s a lot of different stuff here, which makes it convenient and interesting. Also the quality tends to be more consistent than other markets we went to.

However, it is pretty expensive. In some instances prices were many times higher than we’d seen other places, even across multiple vendors at the market. They also don’t seem especially keen on bargaining much (though I am admittedly not very good at it). And while the quality is generally pretty good, you still have to be careful that you’re actually getting what you pay for.
