this small candy store is a trip back in time in all the best ways. We made a small stop here to buy souvenirs and we were very taken by the space, people, traditional Mexican candy offerings, and the service. We were in and out in 15 minutes, so if you are nearby, try your best to make a stop here.

This artisanal candy store has been there for 114 years. Starting with the storefront showcasing all the homemade candies (don't expect brightly colored wrapped chocolates here) and ending with a small, but very quaint interior (the ceiling and the side painted panels are incredible) - the entire experience is worth the visit if you are in the ZĂłcalo area.
If you have a sweet tooth, treat yourself to traditional Mexican candies - the fruit shaped gummies are extra special.

If you want to get a taste of upper-class Mexico in the age of the Porfiriato, go to this elegant store. If you're lucky enough to be in Mexico City around Day of the Dead, you'll see a wonderful window display here. Try a variety of the treats. They are a little more expensive than you might find elsewhere, but the atmosphere and the experience of watching the candy being boxed up are worth the price. My favorite traditional sweet is the coconut-stuffed lime peel, but there are many other delightful choices. .

As an English speaker who hasn’t taken Spanish since high school, I was able to get around Mexico City with my broken Spanish that mainly consisted of asking “what do you recommend” or “what is popular?” Staff would typically smile and recite the few most popular things that they sell to tourists. Great. Maybe not the most tailored to my interests, but at least I knew I was trying what the establishment is best known for.

Dulceria has a huge array of sweets and the staff offered no help in what is popular, their favorites, or anything really useful in narrowing the selection down. Given that a lot of the flavors can’t be seen just by looking at the candy - like chocolate filled with tequila - it was really difficult to know what to choose.

I ended up pretty much pointing at random to things that looked great but - let’s be honest - we’re at a candy store in Mexico City so pretty much everything looked good.

I ordered one piece of maybe five different things including chocolates, a flan, and a cinnamon twist like a churro, and they were all AMAZING.

My recommendation is to go with a Spanish speaker or to order a huge array of sweets without really knowing exactly what they are because honestly it doesn’t matter what they are, they’re all amazing.

I went out of my way to find this shop. Someone from Guanajuato had told me the cajeta from Celaya was the best in all of Guanajuato and Guanajuato is known for its cajeta. The Dulceria de Celaya doesn't have cajeta from Celaya! It has the same packaged stuff I can buy in lots of places in the States and is more expensive! The limones cocadas (coconut stuffed limes) were no better than that available in the market and were more expensive. Mind you, both were very good. The cocadas doradas were excellent. The caneladas were ok, but the little pig cookies did not meet expectations. The staff were not particularly friendly although I was very polite, speak Spanish, and was dressed appropriately. I would suggest you hit up the dulce section of a big market along with a good panaderia for something just as good (or better) at a fraction of the cost.

This store first opened in 1874. They have a variety of deserts, including candied fruits. My favorites are the milk candies. You can’t go wrong if you visit this store.

Take a number when you enter this small sweet shop. Celaya produces beautifully made Mexican biscuits and sweets. I also noticed jars of artiginal Dulce de Leche stacked on the shelves.
These would be great gifts to take home. Yum!

This candy store has been here for more than 100 years. Even if you do not have a sweet tooth, stop by and peek in just to see the interior of this amazing candy store. My favorites are the coconut stuffed limes (limones cocadas), the pig shaped cookies, the tortitas de Puebla (pie crust type exterior with caramel filling) and the colorful lagrimas (flavored liquid filled candies). Candy is sold by weight. Point to what you want and tell the sales lady 100 gramos, for example. Too bad they don't speak English, or maybe another customer can help translate for you. Definitely worth a visit for a sweet treat and some pictures.

So glad we visited - a delicious array of sweets! There was not a lot of English spoken in the shop but the lady helping us was helpful with explanations and suggested options. We also tried some random items that caught our eye that ended up being amazing - everything was delicious - particularly the Gomitas - coloured sugar outers with flavored liquid centers - yum!!

Over a century old! This is a historic candy shop that is fun both to look at and to sample. I loved the chocolate covered cherries (maraschino) and the small pastilles that had a liquid center. Delicious! Some flavors are unusual; I asked for cinnamon and got a chocolate not rolled in cinnamon sugar (which I expected) but rolled just in cinnamon itself. Definitely a strong flavor. Next time I would buy even more of the sweet stuff; it was fun to experiment. One note: I went with a Spanish speaker who helped me order and that helped as the staff were not English speaking.
