Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I was among three people while visiting this spot. It was a bit confusing as the first time I walked past the entrance, it was closed so I explored San Angel and on my way back to the metro, I noticed the doors were open! Such luck! The timing on the websites might be a bit off. It was incredibly peaceful and I'm grateful I went. The mummies were pretty cool too.

After finishing at The Studio & House of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, before carrying on back to my hotel I took a moment to see if there were any museums or sights near by. I saw the Museo El Carmen was a short walk so I went over. I purchased a ticket (very cheap) from the kind gentleman behind the desk and went into the old convent grounds. It was beautiful and big and fascinating to walk around and experience, it was very old and there was lots of energy in there. The gardens were stunning lots of fruits and lush plants and big trees everywhere. I walked out very curious and intrigued to learn more (I don’t speak Spanish and I was by myself so I didn’t ask too many questions as it was a small staff who didn’t speak too much english) so I did some online research later and learned about the convent, it’s history and that was when I realized I missed out on the mummies in the basement! I actually went back to go see it and was so blown away, and the kind man at the ticket desk recognized me too. Made me smile. Upon my research I had learned it was once a thriving convent that sold their fruits and supported itself… eventually it became empty church and during a war the church was looted for gold by foreign soldiers but instead of gold, the mummies were found instead. No one knows who they are but they were naturally mummified by the volcanic soil in the basement (there is a super cool volcanic rock on display in the ground of the crypt where the 10-12 mummies are also in cases on display). The entire story is fascinating and this place is incredible for those who don’t need lots of stimulation. It was very peaceful and quiet when I went on a Wednesday and Thursday afternoon. 10/10 it’s definitely worth a visit and research!

What a great find only a couple of blocks from the Plaza San Jacinto. This old monastery was a welcome respite from the crowds at the Bazar Sabado. The crypt was our draw, and yes, you will see real mummies up close and personal (behind their glass lids). The cloisters and outdoor areas were lovely and so old. The artifacts and artwork were equally ancient, and the whole place has an open, airy feel despite the tiny doors (I guess they were short back then!). My only disappointment was not being able to enter to actual church, which looked amazing from the peek I was able to get.

This museum is located in an old monastery. It has been renovated and it features many beautiful courtyards and a lot of religious artifacts.
The adjacent church is free to visit.

Impressive renovation, outstanding preservation and amazing art; everything inside the greatness of a Carmelita Monastery in San Angel. Don’t miss it! Live the experience of a 1615 monk while walking inside a beautiful historic place until you go downstairs the catacombs and find the 12 resident mummies.

Fortunately we were able to see the last day exhibit of Mural Milenio which was sponsered by El Milenio newspaper. Excellent!! And the juxtoposition of paintings made in 2015 and the XVII century was decidely unique, as well as the rest of the ex-convent museum and the adjoining chapel. Definitely a must visit!

It is one of the essential visits in San Ángel, it is a beautiful old convent that today houses an important collection of sacred art that allows us to measure the importance of the Carmelite order in our country.

Although it has a large collection of sacred art, the great attraction of this museum is the mummies in the crypt. On Sundays access is free.
