Yesterday we visited Gorky Pottery. It was like Disneyworld for a ceramics lover. There is a large room filled with beautiful handpainted pottery. Many stacks of all different shapes and sizes of bowls, plates, platters, animal salt and pepper shakers, bird and rabbit shaped small platters, tureens, ornaments, tiles, etc. As others have said, you have to know where you... It took us a while to find Gorky Pottery, we did not write anything down and had an idea of the general area. People in Guanajuato are friendly, so we asked someone they took us right to the door! So we must have walked past the door several times not knowing. It is right on that main road parallel to... More

It was worth the time to find it. I read it in a guidebook and being a student of ceramics, I wanted to visit the studio and the showroom. My husband was willing to walk around and around with me before he let me ask for help from a gatekeeper , then a shopkeeper. We rang the doorbell twice and... More

Don't be put off if the door is closed -- likely it will be! Knock, ring the bell and persist. Then be let into what appears to be a rather dusty warehouse, taken upstairs and let loose in a large room stacked with hundreds of Gorky pieces -- 95% functional. They're roughly arranged by style (flowers in the center, caballeros... More

My wife and I were delighted at the variety and quality of the pottery we saw here. It compares very favorably with other ceramic factories we have visited both in Mexico and in the U.S. We saw a really gorgeous wall piece that would look great over a mantle, and a pair of beautiful candle holders. Lots of great plates,... More

There are a number of fine pottery shops in and around Guanajuato, Mexico. Lots of good tiles to select from as well. Gorky Pottery is well know but a bit out of the way. Several showrooms of a variety of pottery. We thought about buying a large platter but were worried about getting it back to Colorado. We were assured... More

I have known and collect ceramic from Gorky Gonzalez for the past 35 years. He sets out to capture the old techniques and shapes and yet I can use them in my everyday life- on the table, cooking, serving or just on display. His pieces are museum quality. His son GoGo is now taken over his Father's business and it... More

If you do not know it already, Gorky Gonzales is responsible for the resurrection of traditional majolica pottery. You can see his pottery in museums and buy in in NYC, or you can deal with him or his wife here in GTO. Do not be intimidated by the closed door - ring the bell and you will be invited in.... More
