About
On September 19, 2017, a powerful earthquake rocked the region and damaged the building's clock, which has since been removed. At the time of writing the Palacio was to remain closed to the public for at least a year, for damage assessment and reparations. Check ahead to ensure that it is open again, or simply enjoy the building's facade. This 16th-century fort once served as the palace and home of Hernán Cortés and includes a collection of Diego Rivera murals. TEMPORARILY CLOSE FOR RENOVATION

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Great site which included archeological artifacts and historical contexts of Mexican history with great descriptions. QR code provided additional information. Wonderful Diego Rivera murals on second floor should not be missed. Visit and see!

This is the one of the oldest civil buildings of its kind in Mexico. It is in easy walking distance of the Cathedral, and has been the Institute Nacional de Anthropologica E Historia since 1974. It was built on the orders of Herman Cortes during the time of the knights satred in 1531 and completed in 1535. It has had a varied history -see Wikipedia- and is particularily notable for the Murals by Diego Rivera painted in 1929 and 1930 depicting the various stages of Mexican history. Well worth a visit

If you like art, especially murals, and architecture, you cannot miss the Palacio de Cortes. You will find exquisite and large murals that cover huge walls painted by the famous Mexican artist Diego Rivera. The dynamic of the figures, the colors, the expressions are magnificent. Subjects are generally social, historical and political. The history of Mexico is depicted on those walls.

The palace is a great space but only two exhibits were open when I visited. The signage was not in English so I missed most of the meaning of the exhibits. It is worth a visit just to see the imposing historical building. But there is not much else to a visit there.

The Cortes´Palace in downtown Cuernavaca is a majestic site that transfers you into the ancient mexican past when Tenochtitlan, capital of the aztec empire was twice as big as the largest european city, Seville, and the new world was transformed into a new nation. After admiring the collection, just walk across the street for a wonderful lunch/dinner at Casa Hidalgo in central square.

The Castle is closed for repair as of Nov 2019, so there is not much to see but the exterior of the castle. They do have 2 rooms open with an exhibition of pre-Cortez artifacts. It is free to enter the 2 small exhibits. We were bummed out but we cannot predict what mother nature can do and did to Cortez Castle.

You cannot go into the palace or the museum as it is closed due to earthquake damage. The area around the palace is full of shops and stands selling esquites and gifts.

Due to structural damage from the September 19th 2017 earthquake the site is closed to the public. INAH and México’s Federal engineers are working on accessing damage to make building and grounds accessible to the public.

we were in there on the second floor when the 7.1 strength earth quake started.
Apart from the damaged clock tower, some cracks in the wall and big stones that fell down on the street from the outside walls, the place didn't collapse and nobody got injured even though I was rather slow to find the exit. If you visit the area, keep the next exit in mind and beware of flimsy looking construction.
