Some of the Huatulco beaches are small and quite sheltered. Playa la Bocana is a great alternative if you want space to walk, view bird life, or have some time on your own. The services are more limited than in town but there are two restaurants with seating.

This beach was better than expected, and worth the taxi drive from the resort area (Park Royal Beach). Great place to body surf or frolic in the waves. Also a great place for long walks on the beach.

It is not too difficult to find the mud bath ladies, with their buckets of mud. If you don’t see them, just ask around. They are by the restaurants or on the beach. I think the cost was 100 pesos.

They just apply the mud on you while standing on the beach. So you are putting on a show for the others at the beach! They let the mud dry in the sun, and then they rub the mud off. After that you wash up in the ocean,

The La Bocana area is quite small and rugged. The beach itself is wild, untamed and not many tourists, which I like. I walked along the beach for a while, and saw some good size waves coming in, it’s a really cool beach.

Playa Bocana was our absolute favorite beach. So very quiet and there are two local restaurants right on the beach. Coronas, chips and guacamole and then a swim and nap. Delightful. Remember to bring an umbrella because there isn't any shade.

We headed here early morning and walked to the end and back. Turns out it’s quite a ways. The small pond feeding the flow into the ocean ended up being fairly shallow and the flow was a descent “water slide”.

Lots of big waves/animal life, and a great food spot near the road.

Beautiful, long , flat, wide beach. Huge surf. Totally empty! Due to covid I’m sure. So we couldn’t try the little cafes. But lots of walking and great waves. We will come back next year.

Small town a few miles past Secrets Resort. Relatively short cab ride. Surfing beach but also great for getting a mud bath. Ladies will rub you down with mud and you then let it dry in the sun. They then rub off the excess. Kind of like sanding after you have put the dry wall mud on. You then jump into the surf to wash the mud off. Cost is about 100 pesos per person. Lots of fun.
Also a nice bar right on the beach to enjoy.

La Bocana is an experience in itself!! The mud bath is so much fun...and for a very reasonable price!!!!! That is the first and last thing we do when we are in Huatulco (we go every year). We've done it so many times, we have had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know the entire family at our favorite spot. We sit in their restaurant (on the sea wall) watching amazing things. From time to time, local fishermen (with huge nets) walk out into the ocean and pull in hundreds of sparkling fish and gather them. When the tide is high, the surfers are from as far away as Australia are at that very spot...it's so great to watch. A cold one, great people, amazing scenery, fresh authentic food and the best weather keep us going back.

We visit here every trip and make a day of it, its know for surfing, seafood and mud baths or just beach time. I just love my traditional mud baths, which are known for their healing properties. To get there its a quick scenic 20 min taxi ride from Santa Cruz for about 50 pesos. Once arriving you are usually greeted by a older Mexican woman with clay pots in hand, its why most come to La Bocana , the cost is $100 pesos ( which is $7 cdn -- cheap right who goes to the spa in Canada for that..lol - I also tip another $20 pesos ) Your traditional mud bath starts by one of the locals slathering you in volcanic mud ,,while standing right next to the ocean left to dry in the hot sun then rubbed down !! Rinsing off in the Pacific ocean has me feeling both exfoliated and rejuvenated. Afterwards, we walk the beach and then enjoy a fabulous seafood dish and cool beverage before grabbing a taxi home skin glowing and sun kissed.

Admit I was a bit skeptical when I heard about the mud bath/wraps offered by the women's co-op at La Bocana, 5 min by cab from the Huatulco resort area, or a 15 minute walk. The beach at La Bocana is truly one of the most beautiful in the world, bar none! The money spent, a mere $10 US goes directly to the women's co-op, with the tip, if you wish, to the service provider. What a wonderful opportunity to have the real deal authentic experience knowing the small amount you have paid goes directly to the service provider, rather than a large conglomerate, while the staff live in basic poverty. There truly is something in the mud that not only softens your skin but helps increases circulation throughout your body. I opted for the traditional method of rinsing in the river (actually the overflow from the ocean) which proved to be crystal clear calm waters. The service is available to men and women and is the choice of the locals in the know! Go before noon to avoid the mid-day sun (and hot sand) and be sure to bring your towel. Spring for a light lunch at one of the outdoor cafes lining the beach (delicious and safe) and of course the liquid refreshment of your choice! After all is said and done, the shopping and restaurants seem to blend into each other, but the mud wrap at La Bocana Beach will remain in your memory as an authentic non-commercialized Mexican experience. Hola!
