Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Acapulco's tourist hayday ended 30 years ago. Many places are in disrepair. That is part of its charm. Also, the US State department has told it's citizens to not visit. I'm a US citizen and I like Acapulco because there are so few Americans. Going to a place that is filled with locals is a treat.

Acapulco has been getting a lousy press these past six or seven years and not without reason as drug-induced violence has led to a spike in violence and crime. But visitors (and most are local Mexicans from the centre of the country, especially Mexico City) have not been affected and tourists can feel completely safe in this beautiful city. The setting is spectacular and the night time views over the bays are gorgeous. Try eating at one of the many restaurants that are located overlooking the bay. Must visit sites include the divers of La Quebrada; the Fort of San Diego; the few remaining hotels from the golden years of Acapulco (1940-1970) including Los Flamingos (wonderful views over the ocean) and La Boca; the beaches (of which there are nearly twenty - each with its own distinctive character); the old historic centre which is now undergoing historical restoration and remodelling (visit the Zócalo, for example). Acapulco is no longer as fashionable or popular as newer resort cities and areas like Puerto Vallarta, Cancun, Los Cabos and the Rivera Maya, but nothing - absolutely nothing - can beat the city's spectacular location and views. And the range and quality of dining in Acapulco is also a major attraction.

If you don't frequent Acapulco I can understand the negative post but I have been going down there for 20 years and I feel more then safe in the old part of the city. I continue to walk through the flea markets, take lunch of the beaten path and continue to love this old city. Common sense and day time adventure and you will be more then safe to roam this city. Yes there are lots of police but you see that all the time now in any Mexican city you go to. If you don't go where you probably should not be then you will not find any trouble. No different then staying of the East side of Detroit or the South side of Chicago.
Go and enjoy the Jewel of the Pacific.

We hired a a very nice guy, Jose, to take us to the downtown shopping center. We fully expected lots of nice shops. When we got there I asked if this was it, it was. Filth, dirt, grime is all there is. Jose stayed with us, I was very nervous, wife and 2 teenage daughters. We did buy some nice silver jewelry, not great prices but seemed fair. Jose took us to this crazy restaurant. No American would ever go there by the looks. It was actually really good absolutely authentic Mexican food. Everyone was looking at us thinking what are these gringos doing here. Then we came back to the resort. It was an experience.

We were on a cruise ship that came into port for the day. We did NOT feel safe in this city. I am a world traveler and seen lots of cities, villages, countries and areas, but the old world charm is gone from this city. Lots of garbage, poverty and beggars. During the tour around the city we saw about one hundred or more police cars. There are federal police with black pick up trucks with machine guns mounted on the front hood, then two to four police standing in the back of the truck in camo clothing and carrying more machine guns. These were federal police. There were city police too in unmarked police cars. I would never rush back to Acapulco again. I love Mexico, but this area was a complete disappointment! We saw lots of old run down homes that the Rat pack lived in Frank Sinatra, and others from that time...no improvements have been done to any of their buildings. Obviously the drug trade, and other illegal stuff is happening here and tourists are staying away and yes please stay away... We saw the cliff divers which was interesting of course. But the tour around the old part of town is awful. I have never given a city, attraction such a low grade ever on trip advisor, we won't be back - it scared us being here no thanks!

No tour of Acapulco would right without seeing this area. It reflects a time gone buy. Where old time celebrities stayed and partied. For instance the Flamingo Hotel, once a vibrant hideout for special guests, now is primarily used by Mexican vacationers. It was once owned by John Wayne who had his friends stay there. There are many pictures of him and other celebrities that adorn the entry Wall. You can go there and sit outside, have a drink in a relaxed and quiet atmosphere.

Please rethink your desire to visit Acapulco right now. It is dangerous and the Policia are corrupt. We were pulled over by two uniformed police officers in their police car and shook down for our cash. It was noon on a Thursday afternoon. A horrifying experience. They trumped up charges that we drove through a yellow light and nearly ran over lots of pedestrians! Such liars! The fine was $8,000 pesos! I have visited all over Mexico since I was 5 years old (for 50 years) and I will not go back any time soon. When we share this story with others, everyone has their own nightmare story to share. So sad. Mexico was an awesome place to visit. No more. Not in the immediate future ~ if at all. They need to clean up their act first.

It was our first time in Acapulco - and surely we wanted to see as much as possible of the city had to offer. Our guide - Sebastian Hernandez of acapulcoforall.com - showed us most of the city and told us the history of Acapulco (and it was a lot of it). From visiting the famous part Las Brisas thru historic hotel Los Flamingos to adrenaline driven La Quebrada divers we’ve seen it all - and behind all of it was a colorful stories told by Sebastian. Come and see for yourself - the Old Acapulco is fun.... save yourself a headache of driving - hire a driver like Sebastian...take advantage of tours he has to offer - you will learn a lot of history of Acapulco.
