Arid / dry perfect if you've never seen similar landscapes. The 'natural' pools are turned into a swimming pool nice if you went for a walk. Stargazing is a must do but there's a lot of light pollution towards The south. Also the weather in...More

Transport from San Agustin was relatively easy. Got a bus to Pitalito then Neiva. From there we got a ute to the Observatory in Tatacoa. It actually dropped us at a hotel called Sol de Verano. We were welcomed by a big friendly guy (think...More

This lovely, quiet area is perfect for hiking and stargazing and birdwatching. The 'red part' of the desert looks like a minitature version of Bryce Canyon (USA), while the 'grey part' is more like mountains made of clay. It is still not (over)crowded with tourists...More

One of my favorite weekend trips from Bogotá! Dramatic, beautiful scenery and the observatory is a must visit for the nightly presentation by the resident astronomer for star gazing from 7-9pm. Best hike is El Cuzco (fotos below) and easy level.

I was able to visit the Tatacoa's Desert in Huila, Colombia with my boyfriend. The weather is friendly, if you enjoy the warm, because is not a desert. It's a dry tropical forest. I did not know that. It was the first surprise for me....More

This is a beautiful and tranquil place. The red desert looks like it belongs to another planet. Don't miss the star gazing at the observatorium.

Very interesting visit, day trip from Neiva would be ok if you don't want to stare stars or have a longer hike. Collectivos cost 7000 cop from Neiva and in Villavieja you can take mototaxi with waiting and returning for 30000 - 35000 cop. Negotiate!...More

Hi Elisabeth, One night is not enough but you know that already. Collectivos come and go as they are full. If you want to them leave a specific time, you need to pay them more. Or round up at least 3-4 others that will join... More

When I went to Tatacoa, I drove a car and it is about 26 km north from Neiva. We had decided to take a tent with us, so we could camp out in the desert. We stayed at the Observatorio Astronomico and were allowed to set our... More
