Large park with everything :-)
Jul. 2021
We had a nice time there with some friends and our kids. We started by going to the castle's welcome office and we could get some papers for the kids for a scavenger hunt. So every time we reached a point, we had to answer a question, then we had to go to the next point. We also had pic-nic in the park, and there is a big funny playground (strategically placed at the 3/4 of the scavenger hunt).

Incroyable

J'ai aimé la musée et le parc avec l'aire de jeux.
There are many animals like ducks, swans, geese in the river and deers and other animals that are far from the castle and you have to walk for about 35 minutes to get to.

Make a nice hike starting outside the castle
Jun. 2019
I would like to share my experience that I believe can be useful to other travelers. Sure the castle as well as the park is worth to see! But don't forget to explore the surrounding mountains!

We took bus from Grenoble to Vizille. But it was just too lovely and hot day, so we decided to escape to the nature surrounding the castle.

In the tour info office we asked about possible hikes and, after talking to a very kind receptionist, we decided to make a hike to a Mont Sec mountain (1200 m).

it is a light (sometimes moderate) hike that I would highly recommend to do. The nature and views are beautiful there. I just love Alps!

Beautiful place and park. Don’t skip the walk in the park - lots of deers at the end of the park. Interesting history to learn inside the chateau.

Absolutely lovely park

This town and park nestled in the valley are quite charming. The park is extensive. Feed the ducks—and look out for the carp that lurk below, making the ducks very cautious, and you’ll see why as suddenly a carp will snare the bread. The geese don’t care though.

How many times have I driven past the walls of the park and not really noticed? We've lived (part time) in the area for getting on for 15yrs so it must be hundreds. This time though we thought we'd take my wife's parents and just pay whatever it cost to visit the chateau. First surprise was that it was free. In the UK, as a national monument, the chateau would almost certainly belong to the National Trust and you'd pay to visit. Here you just walk in.

Notice I said walk because there's next to no car parking facilities for the chateau so you have to take your chances with Vizille's normal commercial traffic and not overly plentiful car parks. We got lucky on a midweek day in October. You may not be if you go in the main holiday season.

Once you walk through the gate in the wall though all those concerns vanish. The hustle, bustle and traffic noise from the town disappears and you're in a quiet country park with trees, ducks on the ponds and children on pony rides. It's a somewhat similar feeling to visiting some of the Oxford colleges, an oasis of calm only feet from a busy town.

The Chateau itself has both quite some antiquity and a lot of recent interior modernisation. Its claim to fame is that it was here that the first knockings of what became the French Revolution were plotted and the interior is now a very comprehensive multi floor museum to those events. You'll need passable french to get the most from it but even without that it's an interesting experience. Young children however may not find it quite so riveting and there's a lack of facilities to keep them entertained.

As far as I'm aware the chateau (and presumably the park as well) is currently in the ownership of the Isere authorities and tbh the lack of commercialism shows. There's toilets on the ground floor and a very small shop where you can buy "worthy" level books etc but no cafe or interactive displays etc. A pity really as something like that could (imho) lift it out of the studious and serious category and into a more populist one. Never mind though as although there's only so many times you'd want to go round the exhibits the grounds would warrant many repeat visits. I'll certainly be back but probably on the bus.

Best place to relax
Jun. 2017 • Family
The best place to relax and forget city life. Very nice and quiet place surrounded by mountains. You can pic-nic here, but come early if you want to have a table for yourself. But, there is enough land with green grass for everyone!

great museum and free of charge!
Jun. 2017 • Couples
We visited the museum inside the Chateau de Vizille. It was a free of charge visit and includes the audio. Really nice collections and it was about the French Revolution. Worth visiting it if you are in the area. The Parc is also very nice.
