Most of the tourists are visiting Golden temple alone as this temple is not very popular. Here , they follow the Gelukpa school. The temple is very quiet as there are not many tourists. We witnessed a very special prayer inside the temple which lasted for about two hours.

The head of the monastery is very scholarly and gentle. The library is worth visiting. You can stay in Sera Jey Guest House. They are charging just Rs.500/- for a non-AC double room.Hot water is available round the clock and the restaurant will serve food during the pre-fixed time schedule.

The monks are very kind to everybody and they are in the habit of keeping food and water outside every house for stray dogs and other animals.

We visited all the settlement camps. There are four camps.Shops at these camps are selling handicrafts, clothing and religious articles.

Don't miss the DOLMA rescued Dog Shelter near the 3rd camp. Mr.Kalsang, his sister and team are doing a great work for homeless, sick and dying dogs. The fish sanctuary is nearby. There you may feed friendly and eager fish.

The only negative feed back is about the reckless behaviour of the tourists. Most of the tourists are very loud and have least respect for the traditions of others. They let their children shout and play at even the holiest places. This is more evident in Golden temple.Sera Jey temples are less affected by this menace.

Salted tea and Tibetan food are available everywhere.Don't miss Momos in soup,Thukpa and butter tea.

The standard rate for autorikshaw from Kushal nagar to Sera jey temple is Rs.50/-,The same they will charge for a trip between Sera Jey and Golden temple.

Most of the folks who visit Coorg make it a point to visit the Golden Temple monastery. Little do they know that there is another beautiful and peaceful monastery very close the the Namdroling Monastery. We visited it in the evening and the prayers and chanting was going on. It was very enigmatic and I would say a must witness thing for people visiting Coorg. The inside of the temple is very beautiful-make it a point to visit it when in Coorg. It is very close to the Namdroling Monastery and can be done in the same trip.

Sera Jey Monastery was not even on my itinerary and happened only because Namdroling/ Golden Temple was so crowded that I had to seek out a more peaceful surrounding. A Rs.10 auto ride from Namdroling, Sera Jey offers a completely new experience. It is almost like a city straight out of TIbet with its huge buildings, winding roads and monks in their maroon and yellow robes. When I went the monks were sitting for an exam so there was a single sound to be heard. You can spend as much time as you want in either the prayer halls or roaming about the empty grounds.
DO NOT MISS this amazingly well kept place just a Rs.10 ride away from the Golden Temple.

I had an extremely disappointing and distressing experience at Sera Jey Guest House in Bylakuppe. We had initially called them and requested three rooms. They informed us that only two rooms were available, but they assured us that an extra bed would be provided for our third guest. They even stated that there was no need to pay in advance, and the rooms would be reserved for us.

We informed them of our plan to arrive by 11 a.m. on the day of check-in. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen delays, we got stuck and couldn’t make it on time. We were diligent in keeping them informed, calling multiple times during the day to let them know about our situation. They assured us each time that it was fine and that we could arrive at 7 p.m. instead.

When we finally reached the guest house at 7 p.m., we were shocked by the treatment we received. The same monk who had spoken to us earlier was extremely rude and dismissive. When I reminded him about the extra bed he had promised, he flatly refused and rudely said, “It’s my wish; now I don’t feel like giving it.” He also accused us of having no sense of time, despite us updating him throughout the day about our delay.

We politely requested him to at least honor his promise of providing the two rooms, even if the extra bed was no longer an option. To our utter disbelief, he snatched the keys from us and angrily told us to leave, saying, “Get out. I will not give you the room. Do whatever you want, I don’t care.”

This left us stranded late at night with no other options, as most nearby accommodations were fully booked. We had to travel a long distance to find alternative lodging, causing significant inconvenience and distress.

I find this behavior unacceptable, especially coming from someone in a monastic establishment that is supposed to represent values of kindness and hospitality. Despite being polite and respectful throughout the ordeal, we were treated with utter disrespect.

I strongly advise others to avoid this place unless you want to risk a similar experience. This is not the kind of treatment anyone should receive, particularly after making prior arrangements and communicating in good faith.

We visited the place during the week end and it wasnt the first time, rather an nth time to Coorg - but still love the place.
We decided to venture out to other monastries and Sera Jey was on the list.
What caught us first was the peacefulness there, since it was away from the crowd at the Golden temple/Namdroling monastry area.
Very colorful and aesthetically decorated - anyone would love it.
One can see students into practicing in another hall adjacent to the temple, however, did not venture into them .

If you’re Buddhist & in the area you will probably know about this wonderful monastery. If you’re a tourist you may only know about the Golden Temple which is also spectacular, but in a very different way.

An amazing experience. We spent two nights at the Guest House, attended the inauguration as personal guests of one of the senior monks. Chanting by 300 plus monks during the prayer sessions, is hard to put words to.

Has a predictable Tibetan vibe because of the Tibetan refugees but is nonetheless quite well maintained and unique - great to experience a completely different Himalayan culture in the middle of South India.
