- Morning S257 contributionsGood guide and boat peopleGreat caves to visit( visited on 22nd Mar 24 Morning 8:45 am tour) and a dip in the clear river thereafter gives a refreshing experience. I didn't take a dip but many of the fellow tourists did. If you want to take a dip in water, please bring along your swimsuits. Great caves with a stunning clear water cave river and waterfall inside the caves. Must visit heritage site. The boat ride was also awesome! Very helpful and explanatory guide. They stop at a market first so if you want to buy hand crafted key chains, hand bags table mats etc. to support locals, you can.Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 25 March 2024
- HudsonmccrawVirginia Beach, Virginia3,922 contributionsAbsolutely worth seeing. An unforgettable experience.Coming to Mulu National Park is something every nature loving tourist owes themselves to visit. The Clearwater Cave and Cave of the Winds were just breathtakingly stunning, and totally worth the small fee to pay for a guide to take a group on a tour there. You can also swim in the Melinau River at the entrance of the caves. We were thrilled to have visited these caves, and commend it to others to enjoy the same experience we had.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 April 2024
- Liew C1 contributionFantasticClearwater cave is the best cave ever. The cave itself is very beautiful, and you can see water flowing inside. What a magnificent view. The tour guide showed us the mini pinnacles and joked that we could show them to our friends even though we didn’t climb the main pinnacles. After touring the cave, we had a chance to swim in the crystal-clear water. The water is cool, and you can see fish swimming happily. The only regret is that we could only swim in the clear water for about 15 minutes. We really wish we could have stayed longer. The toilet is clean too, which is very rare in such a rural area, meaning that the management is truly fantastic.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 29 May 2024
- Neris29Singapore, Singapore244 contributionsMost beautiful cave in MuluIn my opinion the Clearwater cave is the most beautiful cave in Mulu National Park. There is a long flight of about 200 stairs to climb to get to the cave, but don't let it put you off because it is actually not that bad. My 9 year son was able to do it without any real problem. Once inside, the guide will actually lead you to a part of the river in the cave where you can actually fill up your bottle with the cold natural mineral water. It was the most delicious water we have ever tasted. Clearwater cave is a must visit in Mulu.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 11 August 2024

The highlight of this cave is entrance is located 200 steps above land. The path is well maintain and required little minimum stamina (except for going up the staircase). The cave is beautiful, big and airy.
My tour guide has bought picnic lunch basket and we get to swim and rest at the clear water cave pool after the hike. I have a very good cave experience.

Clearwater - Fantastic experience...Lots & lots of stairs but really stunning ! The river looked so dark & mysterious flowing by till it disappeared into the rocks that I almost felt like getting in it & doing the adventure caving. One can swim in the emerald waters outside the Clearwater Cave.
Wind Cave is windy in spots which was welcome in the sticky humid weather.
The boat ride getting to the caves is lovely & part of the fun.

Really enjoyed the cave tours -- although it's 216 steep steps up to the entrance of Clearwater, followed by another 100 or so down to the floor of the cave. (And then, on your way back, 100 back up, and 216 back down. Our calves are still sore, three days later!)
Best part, though, was the chance to take a dip in the river at the end. You need it to get the sweat and grime off, but it's also just so relaxing and lovely to float and swim in the river just after it emerges from the mountain.
The boat ride to and fro is a lot of fun too. The stop at the village market is good enough, if predictable - some decent craftwork to purchase to support the locals.

I have never seen these kind of caves before. One must be able to walk, climb stairs ( 250 steps) in order to see the inner part of the caves. it is a wonderfull world.

Departed from Marriott Mulu Hotel via long tail boat upstream to Cave of the Winds and Clearwater Cave. Stopped at the Ranger office 1st to get security clearance before proceeding to a small local handicraft area to purchase locally made handicrafts and blowpipe tryouts (RM$1 for 2 arrows). River is quite shallow and the experienced boatman had to navigate from going aground. Local residential houses align the riverbanks. Gradient ascend up on wooden pathway to Cave of the Winds is relatively easy although alittle slippery due to moss. Natural formations within the cave were awesome. Cool breezes were felt at certain sections of the cave. Easy walk in the Caves of the Winds took about 45mins. After another 5mins boat ride (you can trek if you wish to), you will arrive at Clearwater Caves where you will be greeted with the cleanest and clearest section of the river (direct source of water from the cave although there was no waterfall in sight) and you can enjoy a dip in the water where the river fishes swim amongst you. A coffee and drink snack is provided pre-climb of the Clearwater Caves. Do not underestimate the 200+ steps of ascension to this cave. Steps are steep but there are handrails and pitch stops enroute. There are more uphill and downhill steps within the cave which are dark and slippery. A hat, good walking covered shoes and strong torch is highly recommended. Limestone formations are amazing. The discovery of this cave takes about 1 hour at a leisurely pace. Picnic lunch was provided for my package. Recommended to visit when in Mulu, how can anyone come here and not visit?

How difficult are the steps for a senior citizen? I walk level ground regularly but usually don’t do much climbing.

Diane so sorry didn't see your question. As others say just take it easy, you should be fine.

Do you think this would be too much for nearly five year old and nearly three year old?
Written 1 January 2018
There is a bit of climbing involved so it really depends on how active the children are. I am quite certain the nearly 3 years old will need help as there is one bit where it is a little more steep to climb. The other caves are less difficult but in general the caves are not bad at all. You can take your time to go up, which really helps. I think the children will need help going up. Hope this helps!
