Overview
More
The World Heritage Centre is situated in Blaenavon itself, within the historic former St. Peter’s Church School, founded in 1816, and is the starting point for your visit to the whole Blaenavon World Heritage Site. The former heavy industries left their mark on the environment, which is full of hidden treasures to be discovered after learning what this incredible valley has to offer. St Peter's School, founded by Sarah Hopkins for the education of iron workers' children was the first school of its type in Wales. The visitor (whether tourist or group organiser) will find information on the World Heritage Site, its history and how it can be viewed today as well as a Tourist Information Centre. The main exhibition follows the words of historical characters so that visitors can gain an insight into the daily lives of ordinary people and understand the changes that they experienced during the 19th century. Self-led visits to explore the Blaenavon World Heritage Centre are free of charge.

The displays helped put the history of the area into context. There are a number of family freindly walks and some more ambitious ones available with free maps. Staff freindly, good cafe too.

This is a building that is a mix of old and new. The schoolroom part is old the main entrance and museum section new. It was interesting to look around and gives a history of the area,

Visit here before anywhere else as this is the only place you will get a halfway decent map. The main leaflet has an attractive picture map which is not useful for navigating by but you can also get a more detailed map which does help...More

A very informative interpretative centre for the Blaenavon World Heritage Site. Lots to learn - and the learning is presented imaginatively using different techniques. A very comprehensive series of leaflets is also available to takeaway for different aspects of the area covering both industrial history...More

This was an interesting place which told the history of Blaenavon. Entrance was free. There was a small gift shop selling souvenirs.

Some good displays and info about the area. Parking available over the road. Only need 10 to 15 minutes here.
