Tall people, wear your construction hats!

The hatchet bay caves are cool, both in the temperature and in the adventure sense! There is no one supervising so you should be careful heading down there. Also, there's a little... read more

A few musts if you plan to visit 1) GPS...the entrance is 2 miles south of Rock Sound and there is absolutely no signage. Look for an overgrown dirt road with a non-descript stone entrance on the east side of the road 2) Jeep or 4WD vehicle...a car simply won't make it down this dirt path, plus if another vehicle... 3 couples mid 50's in Eleuthera in late August, off-season. a little challenging to find but totally worth it. you'll need good lights, decent shoes, and a sense of adventure. not sure I'd feel totally comfortable doing it alone or with one other, but it's so totally different from the rest of the island and the amazing beaches. don't worry... It's hard to find, no signs. Make sure you have flashlights, cell phone flashlights aren't recommeded. We tried that and our batteries died, they latest long enough for us to see bats flying around and be able to run out. If you come prepard it seems fun but not for the faint of heart!

The hatchet bay caves are cool, both in the temperature and in the adventure sense! There is no one supervising so you should be careful heading down there. Also, there's a little wire you should be conscious of that helps you find your way. It's better to wear proper footwear to avoid slipping. Tall people also have to watch out,... More

It was a little hard to find AND they clearly do not have anyone to take care of this place. Everything was overgrown. I was really psyched to go. Dressed for the occasion, flashlight in hand. Too bad I didn't bring a machete. Unfortunately, I didn't even get into the cave. I started down the steps and there were wasps... More

This cave is a big grand entry room and then a latter that goes down into the depths for about one mile. This place is so cool and really interesting. Bring many flashlights as you would not want to be down there in the dark. You can exit the cave in the end and there is another 3rd chamber with... More

No signs on the road to find this gem. There was a rock structure just off the road marking the dirt road to follow. We didn't go deep into the cave because we had small children and our flashlights were not bright enough. Be prepared to walk across large broken rocks and climb down a small iron ladder to start... I thought it was silly to worry about getting lost, especially when I saw the string that lead the way....but after going to the end we had some difficulty. Another family actually came to find us to get our help out since they were lost and getting disoriented in the dark caverns. Once you see the organic silos on the... More

Some pics of Hatchet Bay caves. Heading toward Gregory Town from James Cistern, the caves are on the left. Watch carefully or you could miss. Take a walk down and check it out. Unfortunately over time, people have written graffiti on the walls of the cave. Still a good visit in 2009 and 2015.

Anywhere WAY south of the Bahamas has got to be better weather! Here now. Incredibly frustrated. Staying in North Eleuthera and explored as far south as Tippy's Bar in Governors Harbor. Totally COLD!!!!!! Maybe 67 degrees if that and wind is blowing like crazy.....4 days now. Not what we expected. So disappointed. Would NOT recommend anyone to come here to... More
