- Brendan SArlington, Virginia2,151 contributionsTiny fort with Nassau vistaFort Fincastle is one of Nassau’s three historic forts. It’s located very near the well-known Queen’s Staircase. As a fort, it is pretty limited: a few ramparts with replica cannon and two small rooms. The main appeal is that it offers a panoramic view of Nassau, including its harbor and the Atlantis resort. The imposing water tower nearby offers a better vantage point, but it is closed to visitors. The Fort is worth visiting if you decide to see the Staircase, but you wouldn’t spend more than 15 minutes at the Fort itself, and have to brave a gauntlet of souvenir vendors just to get to it.Visited January 2024Travelled soloWritten 17 January 2024
- Jack JCatoosa, Oklahoma155 contributionsGreat Stop at Fort FincastleFort Fincastle in Nassau, Bahamas, was a great stop during our visit. The views from the fort were fantastic, offering a beautiful panorama of the island. Our guide was amazing and made the experience even more enjoyable. Highly recommend visiting Fort Fincastle for anyone exploring Nassau!Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 2 June 2024
- The_Wanderer1992Columbia, Maryland2,545 contributionsFort VisitPrior to entering this fort, you walk past a hoard of vendors. This fort is small and does not offer much. The highlight of this fort is that it has the highest point on the island, which gives great views. Price was too high.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 July 2024
- SpanishteacherMD2,177 contributionsInteresting history of Nassau at Fort FincastleSuch a cool place to visit. Right near the Queen's Staircase. Offers a wonderful view of the Harbor and Paradise Island. I didn't go in, but I didn't feel it necessary to do so. You can walk around the perimeter and still have an enriching experience. Lots of shops and stalls just outside the fort for souvenirs. Places to get water and other items to drink by the entrance to the Queen's Staircase. Public restrooms here as well. A mere 10-minute walk up from Bay Street to get here.Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 14 July 2024

Our first time to the Bahamas - primarily for diving (every other day). On “days off” we did a lot of walking around. We wanted to see at least two of the three forts in Nassau. Walking up the “Queen’s Steps” brought us to Fort Fincastle. That was where we met Roston, an energetic and very well informed “keeper of the keys” to the Fort. After we paid the minor entry fee ($3/person), he asked if we’d like a guided tour ... we asked about cost and he said no cost, but tips would be appreciated. It was so much more than a guided tour ... it was an experience that brought the Fort alive for us ... he would ask for volunteers, have us do this and that, and then invite us to figure things out. And he capped it off by answering all our questions - in quite remarkable detail! Just awesome!!

We were taken here as part of our cruise ship tour.
It was a little far and driver had to take a long way into town just to get there and well... the panoramic views of the island are great yes, but the fort is just two walls and if you want to go inside you have to pay extra.
We were sorry we spent the day in a tour while we could have gone directly to the beach and enjoy the beautiful waters.
Do yourself a favor and watch a documentary of the island, I can enssure you it would be more interesting, informative and you will not lose a day on land.

We made our own walking tour in Nassau and Fort Fincastle was one of our stops. The admission was $3 plus VAT tax for six of us we paid $20. The gate person who collected our tickets gave us a guided tour. He was fun and informative. You can visit the fort on the outside without paying admission, but I suggest paying the few dollars and learning why the for was built the way it was, extremely interesting. There is a restroom at the fort and you can buy bottled water at the ticket window. There are also local vendors selling goods at the top of the hill where the fort is located Tip: the Queens Staircase is located at the fort, you can get two for one attractions!

We walked around looking at the items all the vendors had on display. When we reached Fort Fincastle our group decided not to pay the admission price. Instead we walked around the fort and got some great pictures with canons. We could also see the harbor and lots of cruise ships.

visited again after many years- still a delightful little fort. Offers great view. If your feeling strong, you can push the cannons... nice signage telling the history. Really cheap to go inside. As a fan of forts and history, I recommend stopping by

Decent, 360 degree view of the area but besides that, there isn't much to rave about. The fort had a gentleman tell us the history when we first enter before climbing up to the view point. Back at the base there was a massive parking lot with few souvenir huts and "Big Mama" was the main draw as she was the loudest out of all the sellers. Just past the parking lot you are met by a gentleman who will tell you the history of the Queen's Staircase for a tip before you descend it. Or you can just walk down it to the parking lot below without knowing the history. if you have to choose, go to Fort Charlotte.

Interesting. Quick little 15 minute (max) view. Not super exciting, but something to kill time with. I think the cost was $3, but noone was around when I went in, and I didn't realize it cost until some friends went in after.

Our tour stopped here for 15 minutes. The Fort is very small and there is an entrance fee. Didn't bother to pay and go inside though the guide said if you go up top, there are some good views of the island for pictures. Around the Fort at the typical souvenir stands.

This fort is tiny and lame, looks like it was turned into a big deal merely because there isn't much to see throughout the city. Does not come anywhere close to the forts we have seen in other places - such as Puerto Rico. The streets we had to walk to get there have no sidewalks, which seems typical for most Nassau streets. Ultimately, would we know this is going to be the experience, we would not go at all, and would just take one of the excursions to nearby islands that have wonderful beaches. Looks like beauty of this place is in the beaches around it, and not in the city itself. (Very sorry to say that.)

Hi Lance! Thanks for the great info! Is there an entrance fee to the fort?
Written 10 December 2017
Yes, there is a fee to get in. I recommend bringing small bills and small coins. They will give you change back but I their currency.
