Sun Charters
About
The S/V ATABEYRA is a 69', traditionally rigged trading schooner that retired from cargo service almost 20 years ago. The vessel traded for years between Hispaniola and the Turks & Caicos Islands carrying such commodities as rum , beer, produce, plants, building materials and even a few critters. The ship has been refit as a charter vessel and now stays close to home in the sheltered waters of Grace Bay and the Caicos Cays of Turks and Caicos Islands. The S/V ATABEYRA is the perfect platform for learning hands on operation of traditional sailing craft, for exploring the exquisite undersea world and many islands that surround us or just lounging on her spacious, shaded decks. No vessel in the TCI charter fleet is as large or as versatile. Sun Charters and the ATABEYRA crew offer our guests a unique opportunity to get real sailing experience aboard the last of the tropical trading schooners. Being a gaff-rigged vessel carrying two headsails, there are lots of lines to pull, many sails to tend, and the skipper will even be happy to let you take the helm. Feel the past come alive as we sail through the uninhabited chain of Caicos Cays the same way it was done hundreds of years ago. The Cays were once the lair of the infamous lady pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Reid, and the waters and surrounding islands remain basically untouched since that time. The Crew of the Good Ship Atabeyra are proud that she is overwhelmingly the boat the residents choose when recreating in the Caicos Cays.

This was the highlight of our trip to Turks & Caicos. We chartered the boat for the day with 3 families and explored the cays. We even got lucky enough to se Jojo, the famous dolphin, who played with our anchor line for awhile giving us a great show. The owner, David, was so easy to work with and responsive in booking. The crew aboard the day of our charter was so accommodating, fun and knowledgeable. I highly recommend this experience to anyone looking for a more intimate, non commercial adventure.

This was a very laid back glow warm sunset cruise. David was very chill about taking my reservations three weeks prior, didn’t even require a deposit. Kept in touch with him no issues. Good people on board, plenty of drinks including rum punch. Saw a great sunset and a few minutes of the glow worms. Well worth the $50 per head.

Our group of 8 went on a sunset sail lasting approximately 2 hours. The views, the breeze, the food and drink, great music and especially the crew made it an unforgettable experience. The boat was in tip top shape and was captained and crewed in excellent fashion. Shout out to Junior for playing some Rolling Stones music for me. It was a blast!

Had a disappointing "sail" this past week . We booked a half day sale with lunch for 5 hours. The regular captain was out of the country so a captain trainee was in charge. It was a beautiful day and somewhat windy. We were told that they would have to make some adjustments in their normal trip due to choppy seas but we were assured that we would have a good snorkeling area and be able to sail. We motored upwind which I understand as a past sailor myself. Went to a shipwreck where our adult children were able to jump off. From there we motored again to an area of some preserve. The area originally planned was now determined to be again too choppy and there were too many other vessels according to the crew. The area we dropped anchor had no visible wildlife. After about a half hour of seeing nothing we got out of the water. Lunch was the highlight of the trip, very good. We then were told that they were sorry things were not working out but that they would put up sails on the way home. We motored around some more in the bay and then they headed for home. They had put up the jib for about 15 minutes early in the sail but no sails at all on the way back. We motored back to the marina. I pointed out that the captain-in-training had said he would sail back and was told that he was advised not to sail in because the vessel would be too difficult to control Find that hard to believe with the size of the boat (69 ft). This was to be the highlight of our trip and I wanted the family to experience a sail in the tropics but it did not happen. Crew was very friendly but I was not happy with the experience. Having done two other sails at other island locations one of which was in fairly strong winds, I don't understand why they at least could not have put up sails for a while on the way home. The bay was not that rough, winds were consistent and there was plenty of room. They did give us a slight discount on the cost, mostly out of a mistake in only counting this as a 4 hour sail. Overall in hindsight, I wondered if the lack of wanting to deal with the rougher waters had to do with an inexperienced person at the wheel. There was another crew member that had been a captain and was advising our captain but for some reason he did not take the helm.

My family reserved 4 spots on their Friday night sunset cruise in early June for a sail on July 2. We showed up, along with 6 other people, and wandered around the Blue Haven Marina trying to find the boat. Finally someone from the boat found us and took us across the street to the dock (it was well hidden down a dirt road). On the way there, three more people joined our group. We all had reservations. We were told the boat was full and we couldn’t go. (BTW, we had just paid $35 for a cab ride to get there). When I asked the owner what happened, he said a few groups showed up and just got on the boat. “I probably should have had them get off the boat,” he said. YOU THINK?? As we were standing there, 9 more people showed up that had reservations. So in all, we saw 22 people with reservations get turned away. Bottom line, if you really want to go on a sunset cruise, don’t book with this place. Very disappointed.

On behalf of the captain and crew of Sun Charters and the Good Ship Atabeyra, we would like to offer humble apologies for not catering to your family last Friday in the manner that you expected. We fully understand your disappointment. It may not of make any difference, but given a little more time to explain our predicament I would have offered the following: On Thursday before our Friday Sunset, TCI relaxed Covid restrictions and locals took the opportunity to get out and about. We always try to accommodate walk-ons, but last Friday we were inundated and our regular gate-keeper was not at his post. As I explained to the group that you arrived with, there were seats available on the boat (within our rated capacity), but that I wanted each individual to look at the way guests were distributed and make sure they were comfortable with the distribution. I offered to take folks home who did not want to join the boat. Most of the last group to arrive decided to join us and the feedback from folks who took part was good. Once again, I understand your disappointment in missing the Sunset Sail last Friday. Please call in your CC details at your convenience and we will be happy to refund your expenses of getting out to the boat.

This 2-ish hour sunset cruise around Grace Bay was beautiful! The crew is very attentive to the guests (I think the boat fit about 30 guests) and always ensured everyone had a drink in their hand and was comfortable. They served light, local snacks, played music requests, took pictures and provided a really fun experience overall. You do get picked up in the water on the beach - so don't wear pants or long dresses and be prepared to take your shoes off! You might want to bring a towel too because a few people got soaked trying to get on the boat during a high wave. There is a small bathroom on the boat which was private and better than I was expecting.

We had an excellent day of snorkeling, relaxing, shelling, sailing and even a little dancing on the Atabeyra! Captain Eric and first mate JR were very flexible with our itinerary allowing us just the right amount of time in each beautiful spot. 12 of us were easily and comfortably accommodated on a beautiful sailboat. The rum punch was delicious and plentiful. Snacks were great. Bottled water and local beer was also available. Recommend the sunset cruise - spectacular and a little cooler. The crew was very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. Couldn’t have enjoyed the day more!

I absolutely loved this experience!! The whole crew was amazing!! They were friendly, professional and made sure we all had what we needed. I loved that we boarded the boat from the dock out at the harbor and not on the beach! The entire sunset sail was amazing and i contribute that to the personality of the crew, the immaculate boat and the music it created a beautiful atmosphere during the sail. I missed the snorkel and sail they offer once a week publicly, I HIGHLY recommend Sun Charters! I will definitely book again with them

Where do I begin with this awesome excursion, the glow worm experience, led by captain David Douglas, a TCI resident who has been sailing for over forty years. Constructed by David and his father, decades ago, the Atebeyra is a majestic sailboat that navigates the waters, of TCI, with infinite wisdom. His crew; son Adam, first mate Junior and his siter Willy, offer an epic journey into the clear waters of Pine Cay, Iguana island as you head towards the evening and the glow worm sunset experience. The rum punch was awesome as was the Marvin Gay soundtrack as we idled into the night to witness the dark ocean of TCI come alive with glow worms. Junior is convinced that there is something special in Marvin's voice that makes it all possible. The female glow worm is the brightest, looking to attract the perfect suitor, there are many! Just when you think you have seen enough, junior scoops up a glow worm and shows you just how they mate. This was our third trip to TCI and we are so grateful for stumbling upon the Atebeyra! This vessel is a step back in time while offering modern views of TCI and it truly is a family experience, Thank you David, Adam, Junior and Willy! We will return for a fourth, GO EAGLES!!!!!

Of all my experiences in the week I spent here, the sunset cruise has got to be the one that will stick with me the most. The food and snacks onboard were delicious, and the deck elegant and intimate without feeling cramped. The crew were very welcoming and friendly, all very familiar with the local area. We were lucky enough to go on a day with ideal weather, this combined with the great music and enthusiastic passengers created the perfect atmosphere.
The highlight of the trip however, was of course the sunset. From the moment of embarking we were treated to a stunning view of the ocean and the island, allowing me to appreciate the beauty of the island like never before. When we stopped to watch the sun finally go down, it was the most mesmerizing, exquisite snapshot of the vast pacific ocean that I have ever experienced. Truly an experience like no other, I would wholeheartedly recommend this opportunity to anyone who gets the chance.
