Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A small museum but very interesting if you want to know about the history of Trinidad. It has details about the wildlife of T&T and even some examples of some of the animals that once lived on the island including wild cats and snakes etc.

It also has an interesting insight into the arrivals of all the different peoples of Trinidad including the first Indian arrivals and the first arrivals from Africa and information about slavery in the country. Lots of info about the oil industry and how important it is to the island.

Also has a nice little gallery as well!

Museum enlightened the history of Trinidad both geologically as well as culturally. Enjoyed the art gallery with Leroy Clarke's works on display. Perused at my leisure for about 3 hours. Beautiful heritage building but needs funding for upgrades

A free attraction providing a wealth of information on the natural, cultural, and industrial history of Trinidad. The art galleries feature sketches and paintings of Trinidad as it once was.

I would like to see more information about the railroad history........ I was amazed by the agricultural production in 1810 as compared to what it is today.

When walking down along the Queen's Savannah Park we came in its southwestern corner to the Chinese built National Academy of the Performing Arts with its double-curved metal roof. Next to it is the Victorian building, which now houses the 'National Museum and Art Gallery'.

This museum was for us the best downtown Port of Spain had to offer, a city, which unfortunately lacks any pedestrianised stripes and streets and is generally not one of the most attractive places in the world, although a lot of improvement would be possible.

The not too big National Museum is definitely good, since it covers almost all aspects connected to the island from geology, nature, history, sociology, economy and it also has an art gallery and a room with varying exhibitions. This is a place the 'Trini's' can be proud of and I hope more will be done to make this interesting city more attractive to visitors and locals alike.

Visiting this museum/art gallery was a disappointment Jan. '09 because the art gallery part was completely closed for renovations with no known completion date. The museum part of the building could me much improved if they put in better lighting to view many of the exhibits at their best, and a little cleaning would be nice. (10+ years of dust accumulation on many exhibits made them look bad.) Also needs some kind of ventilation as there was no A/C or fans to keep the air circulating. Some of the Carnival exhibit needs to be updated because all the costumes seem to date from around 1989 or earlier, hardly representative of what Carnival is like today. The history of steel pan was very good. Also make sure the guards at the door know you are inside. We went on a very slow day & were the only ones inside. Were accidentally locked inside when the guard shut the front doors to prevent rain from blowing inside. When we wanted to leave, no one was around, so we kept shouting until someone finally came to let us out.

We thought it was more of an art gallery, but were pleasantly surprised at the mix of natural history (animals plants) and cultural history (pre and post colonisation). Even more exciting was the pieces displayed by locals art in the run up to Carnival 2020. We enjoyed the visit and would definitely recommend.

Located at the south-east corner of Queen's Park Savannah, this old museum traces what life was like on the island at various times and in different social classes. It has a room with paintings by Cazaubon. One is dedicated to oil drilling at sea. While it displays little interactivity with visitors, it includes a small movie theatre where you can choose between three short films illustrating street life today.

The exterior is a charming throwback to colonial times. The interior is a maze with an assembly of diverse parts: geology natural history, hydrocarbon extraction and industry, colonial history, agriculture, art and so on

Many exhibits are ancient and not well presented.

The best part, in my view, is the art gallery on the second floor. Some really talented painters are featured there. The pen and charcoal images are extraordinary.

The museum covers the geology, petroleum industry, natural history, sports, art, and history of the island. Admission is free. It is a nice museum where you will learn a lot about the island. You can tell that they are doing the best they can on a limited budget, but it does provide enough information about the country to whet your appetite. Definitely worth a visit if you are in Port of Spain.
