Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We had a pleasant hike up the eerily beautiful river canyon. You can see why the Caribs considered it a spiritual place. Our guide, Royston, said not many people do this short hike; and we certainly couldn’t have located the trailhead (in a field of cane and weeds)without his knowledge.
When you are in the canyon, you are shaded from the sun, and the atmosphere is spooky once you know about the Carib massacre that took place here. Some of the petroglyphs have had their color refreshed; some are au naturel. You'll have to look carefully to find some of them.
You will get your feet wet on this hike (unless you are a gymnast like Royston). We had amphibious hiking sandals, which worked well. The walk to the petroglyphs is not at all strenuous. Shortly after the petroglyphs, the canyon is blocked by a rock wall. If you are a rock climber, you can continue further up the canyon using ropes.
Unusual spot - - combines natural beauty, with an historic event, with a nice hike.

This is an important place in Kittian history, but is now not worth a special trip. The river is dried up and not flowing most of the time and is only commemorated by a plaque. It is good to see on a tour because your guide is likely to tell you more about the history, but otherwise it will probably be a let down for you.

Local lore suggests the river ran red for three days after the slaughter of more than 2,000 indigenous people at the hands of the British and French colonial troops.
Sad testament to humanity.

Family of 3 hiked the Bloody River to the bat cave - my 13 year old daughter loved it! All the rock scrambling, water hiking and climbing up the wooden ladder made it a challenging but fun experience! We rented a car and drove here from the cruise ship dock and can firmly say that no one on our ship had our same experience - we never saw another person in the 2 hours we hiked. It was great! Felt like we really saw some natural St. Kitts.

Interesting story but greatly exaggerated. As a physics major, I ran the discharge flow rate of a "river" 12' wide, even only 1/4 deep, at a barely flowing rate (very slight slope) and to maintain that volume of blood for three days would require the blood of over a million adults. I imagine it would take longer to kill 1 million people than three days.
But I still can't figure out the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow for some reason.

Any tour to the north of the island will almost certainly take you to Bloody River, where 2000 Caribbs natives were massacred by British and French forces. The river is said to have run red with blood for 3 days. Now it is just a dried up and overgrown river bed. The story in perhaps more important than what you actually see in this very short photo stop.

I believe most of people who wrote reviews of this place were not really visiting the canyon itself. We had difficulties to find a driver to get there, we had to explain several times to different people where we want to go.
It is a beautiful nature site. You have to cross an area with high grass to get into the forest from the parking. You can not really see where to go, our driver showed us the way. After you are in the jungle it fees like you enter into a different world. The area has a unique atmosphere. You can walk alone in the silent nature and wonder on the birds passing by and play Tarzan on the hanging vines. At one point you have to climb a wooden ladder and my friend was scared of it so we turned around but it really worth the effort. I would definitely go back here again.
After rain it can be slippery, hiking shoes or hiking sandal recommended.
Count at least 1,5 hours for the visit and bring enough drinking water. It is hot and humid.

I also did a review for bloody point. The place of the massacre by the French and British of 2000 local souls. They say the blood ran along the river for 3 days.

Quick information stop on an island tour. Well maintained by the locals. Do not blink or you will miss it.

Like the reviews for Bloody Point, this is a quick informational stop on an island tour. The history is sad, but there isn't really anything to see there. Be sure to learn the history though.

Did you have a guide? How do I find the trailhead if not, and if so how did you find a guide? Asked a travel company and they were unfamiliar with this hike. Thanks, Beth

I was there December 26, 2018. My son and I couldn't get any taxi driver to take us there without a "guide". That part of town is a little sketchy. We have excellent hiking skills, but would've had a tough time getting back to the cruise ship if we had been let out at the trailhead. We ended up on a "taxi tour" of the island, and we drove right by the trailhead spot.
