Come up to the mountains and follow the trail to the waterfall that gave Hacienda Buena Vista its name. What used to be an important coffee plantation was also the scenario of a unique relationship between land, water and slavery. Today, at the heart of the former hacienda is a carefully restored historical site containing structures more than a century old and a hydraulic turbine that's the only one of its kind. Completely refurbished, the turbine is still powered by the water of Río Canas and serves as the main engine for other machines of the time. Spaces are limited, please reserve in advance online or by phone.

Hacienda Buena Vista is coffee plantation, nestled in the mountain part of Ponce which is one of Puerto Rico's main cities, located on the south of the island. The place is beautiful and full of history. The 19th Century machinery in the Hacienda still works using water as power. Tour guides are very knowledgeable and may answer any questions the... More

This place is so beautiful, nestled in the mountains of Ponce, the view is beautiful and the temperature is cooler. Everyone is super NICE and knowledgeable about the history and the workings of this coffee plantation. They give you a sample of their own grown coffee. The tour takes about 90 minutes and you should bring some comfy shoes as... More

Toured the Hacienda Buena Vista, a coffee plantation and estate in Ponce, Puerto Rico, established in the 19th century. The Hacienda is significant…First, it contains the only remaining example of the Barker hydraulic turbine (from West Point Foundry in Cold Spring, New York 1843) which was the first reaction type turbine ever made; second, it offers one of the best... It was educational, fun and beautiful. The big flour and coffee making machines from 1840s still work! They power them using big amounts of water as part of the tour! You also learn about the different plants, an orchid that makes vanilla and the history of agriculture in Puerto rico. Worth the trip!

I went with a friend and her little girl (6 years old) for the Cocoa Harvest tour. We had a blast! Our guide Ray was excellent. He showed us the Hacienda's main house and told the history of the family that lived there. After that, he explained the process for making the artisan chocolate produced in the Hacienda. We saw... Visited here with a tour group while vacationing in Puerto Rico. After visiting the historic plantation house which is interesting and atmospheric we had a very nice guided tour which took us on a nature trail to see the water system the farm used in their coffee production. As we walked along the trail we also walked next to the... More
