This statue commemorates the religious procession that used to take place in the city with the priests leading the way with the cross. It is a slightly modern statue and is in a lovely spot along the city wall. There isn’t a lot of shade so take that into consideration.

I'm only giving 3 stars because this is a nice place, but not a must visit location if you are on limited time. The statue depicts a religious procession led by women. However, the legend that goes along is that the British were about to invade and saw the torches of procession and thought that it was people ready to defend the city so the British retreated.

While the bronze Procession monument is interesting depicting historic events, I found the surrounding area and views to be the main star here.
The monument composition refers to an event during British occupation when a Catholic Bishop lead women singing and praying to God to save PR. According to a legend the British withdrew.
However, far more interesting I found terrific views of the bay just by the monument with several PR famous watchtowers and views of the Fortaleza Presidential palace and San Juan gate.

Beautiful spot overlooking the bay, with easy access to roads leading to El Morro fort, a nearby gate to the Paseo along the bay, and on of the safest spots in all of the Americas. It's right at the automobile gate to the governor's mansion. Very interesting and extensive population of cats, they are taken care of by Save a Gato foundation, who neuters and vaxes and feeds the cats. They are feral, but very mild in temperament.
As it happens, we stayed for 4 nights in a Vrbo apartment right across the street from the statue - delightful space and very convenient to old San Juan.

Interesting Statue near the western coastline of Old San Juan. Can be on the way from the cruise port to El Morro, or close enough to the cruise port for its own trip. Near view of the water on the western side.

Bless me Father, for I have sinned. This statue is cool, but it makes you want to immediately go to church. It's like Christ is upon you. It is in the middle of Old San Juan. Kind of cool area though.

Amazing sculpture that portrays so much emotion and strength. Read the story before you go because there’s no English translation. Wether it is history or legend doesn’t matter the dramatic portrayal, the faces capture the emotion of the moment. A must see. It is a statement of great courage in the face of a situation that would appear to be hopeless.

Beautiful wedding overlooking the ocean right here at this statue and little plaza... then the wedding party all celebrated all the way up the cobble stone street to the El Convento for their reception. We weren't a part of it, but it was joyful to observe!

Part of the original walled city rampart is now a small park, to the left of City Gate and up the hill, with impressive religious influenced brass statues. Dedicated in 1971, the statues commemorate those who defended the British invasion of 1797 (which occupation lasted only 60 days, according to Park Rangers at el Morro). The park has an astounding view of the bay, ocean and mountains cascading to the sea. Across the bay (accessed by 50¢ ferry) is Cataño, where you can have a wonderful meal at Don Tello restaurant, but avoid the Casa Bacardi tour.

The legend goes that in April, 1797, the city was under attack by the British and there were no reserves as the soldiers were fighting elsewhere. The women of the city banned together and formed a 'rogativa' - a procession. With the priest, they marched through the city, ringing bells and carrying torches praying for their deliverence. The Brits saw the procession and thought reinforcements had arrived - and they left. These 4 statues (the tallest is 12') are grouped together and are a celebration of these women. The statues are esthetically beautiful and their location above the bay, above the last gate is appropriate. Take the time to climb one more little hill and see this wonderful piece of art - it's only a few steps up the hill from the gate on the right side if you are headed out of the city.
