More than just an art museum, Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico hosts concerts and festivals as well.

The Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico (MAPR), a non-for-profit organization, was inaugurated on July 1, 2000, as a legacy for the Puerto Rican people. The mission of the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico is to enrich the lives of its diverse audiences by making accessible and promoting the knowledge, appreciation, and enjoyment of visual arts from Puerto Rico and the world. The MAPR engages diverse communities to facilitate learning experiences about the visual arts through: the growth of a well-researched permanent collection exemplifying significant and representative examples of Puerto Rican art from the sixteenth century to the present; a dynamic program of exhibitions supported by engaging and exciting educational and cultural programs that collectively deepen the understanding of the role of the visual arts in the human experience and contribute to the creation of a curatorial legacy; documentation, research, interpretation, preservation, and conservation of the collection and the visual arts patrimony of Puerto Rico; and alliances with local, regional, and international museums and institutions to advance the knowledge of, access to, and understanding of the visual arts of the world.

I walked over from the friendly Hotel Iberia for a visit to an art museum. What I got was much more. It is an exploration of the the land, history, culture, music, and people of Puerto Rico through art. Very well presented and explained. I have never experienced so many staff who knew so much about their museum and were... More

Very disappointed that the children's metal play area was removed from Activarte area. Also had to abandon the sculpture park because of unpleasant loud music. The price of the museum is very reasonable and the permanent adult areas were good for me. Sadly, my children had a pretty horrible time.

The museum of art of Puerto Rico is a beautiful building with several floors of local art - paintings, mixed media, a few sculptures and videos. Not everything "spoke" to me; but there were a lot that did! Admission was free. They had a special exhibit called Re-encuentros: it is a wonderful exhibit. Not sure how long that is going... More

lots of old, dark Spanish religious paintings and one incredible room of large PreRaphaelite works. It's a quick visit but interesting.

The name of the museum is litteral. All works displayed are by Puerto Ricans. While generally eclectic the majority of the works are modern. I tend to like classical arts, so my score is lower. The building and grounds are very nice, the outside having flowing ponds with Coi. I never saw a blue coin before, however I noticed that... More

An absolute gem. A former hospital converted to a museum. Beautiful architecture and amazing galleries. The art, all by Puerto Rican artists, is diverse, cutting-edge and exceptional. Felt like i was at the Whitney Biennial. Terrific way to spend an afternoon in San Juan.

The building interior is very modern in style . It's galleries have been designed to perfection in that they are logically laid out and not over big, creating an intimate space for each of the exhibits. A very pleasant way to spend a couple of hours. Free entry on Wednesday.

This museum is a great effort by the government to have a world class museum facility in the capital city. The exhibits are more a local expressions of the political and social situation Puerto Rico is in than the intended purpose. The location is good for Condado and Santurce residents as well as for tourists in general. Parking is limited... More

I'm not usually a visitor of art museums when I travel, but the reviews---and the thunderstorm---lured me in. Interesting galleries with good Spanish/English signage and very helpful, talkative guides put the viewing experience into cultural context. The galleries themselves display a riot of color as backdrop for the paintings of such luminaries as Tufino and Oller. There's a nice shop... More
