An amazing place in the heart of Montego Bay. To see the small cage where people were imprisoned, the memorial to Sam Sharpe and the Market Square where he was hanged. Also see the hustle and bustle of the city with street vendors and shops. We came here as part of a private tour with a driver and did not feel unsafe at all. In fact, there were police at the square.

This monument in Montego Bay 'Sam Sharpe Square' is in honour of one of Jamaica's national Hero The Rt Excellent Samuel Sharpe.

Sam Sharpe was instrumental in fighting against slavery in the 1800s in Jamaica and the eventual abolition of slavery in the country.

Sam Sharpe was captured and hanged in 1832 and the Jamaican Government passed the Abolition of Slavery Act in 1833.

He was made a National Hero in 1975 and is on the Jamaican $50 note.

His statue is in Montego Bay Square, now Sam Sharpe Square.

Awesome monument!! The exhibit shows Sam preaching to his people. Sam Sharpe did not die in vain, he was declared as one of Jamaica’s National heroes.

An amazing place to visit with some real Jamaica in culture. Go with a good driver. Chances are he has a local there that he steers tourists to.

Fun to visit, lots of shopping nearby. It's a pretty navigable city, but not quite what I expected from songs about Montego Bay all of these years. It's mostly functional rather than exotic or recreational.

As we were dropping people off downtown we drove down St James Street and stopped at the Sam Sharpe Statue which is located in the centre of Downtown Montego Bay (which wasn’t a pleasant part of town). Sam Sharpe was born into slavery in 1804 and the Memorial commemorates the struggles faced by him.

We had the opportunity to stop at the square while our our private tour of Montego Bay Jamaica this May 2018. We visited The Cage, downtown Montego Bay, Sam Sharpe Square and the Museum and the Statues. Visit here as a tour of the city. Great History of Jamaica.

Jamaica's path of independence from slavery was started by Sam Sharpe, so we really wanted to visit. However, the square is in a very congested part of town. It was crowded and we were hassled by locals. And it felt very unsafe
