Went on a Saturday to see maximum number of stalls. Mainly spices or fruit/veg and all the stalls looked the same. Area around was difficult to negotiate as uneven ground and crowds of pedestrians plus cars. Made us appreciate how lovely our hotel was in comparison, and craft stalls there sold spices very reasonably as well as craft items not seen in the market.

Market Square in the center of St George's is a colorful area where you can find vegetables, fruits and spices being sold by vendors. There were more locals than tourists wandering around on the Saturday I visited. We also came by Friday afternoon and early evening, and it was a different vibe. We had a great time hanging out at Bryan's Bar drinking Caribs and rum but were continuously pestered by the local homeless characters asking for money. There were a number of sketchy folks around and I wouldn't want to hang out late at night here. However, this did not prevent us from having a good time.

Set in the middle of St. George's this is a classic Caribbean marketplace. Due to destination popularity it mostly caters for cruise passengers.
You'll find a lot of spices, nutmeg of course as well tourist trinkets. I rather consider it a by pass attraction.

Market Square was disappointing, not how I remember it from 35 years ago. Plenty of spices on offer but the craft part of the market did not offer very much and at 10.00 in the morning a lot of it wasn't open.
My memories are of ladies with huge sacks of spices selling by weight, not pre packed cartons, plastic containers and tubes of various spices, time moves on I suppose, but it wasn't for me.

Medium sized outdoor market selling local produce and other stuff. If you can't find what you want hear ask someone and they will lead you to what you want. Avoided if you are driving, extremely busy and loud and lots of cars trying to get through.

Always a great place to visit! We enjoy at least one stop at the Spice Market in St.George when we are in Grenada.

Lots of local fruits, vegetables and spice - plus anything else you could want from clothing to snacks.

We purchased fresh Ground Nut Sugar Cake, spices, smoothies, fresh fruit and coconut water.

Part of the fun is chatting with vendors - ask questions and just say ‘no thank’ you if you don’t wish to purchase something or already have.

Dive into culture and take a walk by this market. It's not only colorful but exciting. Don't have expectations of cleanliness but rather just walk in and explore. I found Grenadians to be the friendliest people of the many Caribbean islands I've been to.

We had been to Grenada on a cruise a few years ago and agree with some of the other reviews that this is one of the more aggressive markets. It was the port I was least excited about - so I decided to change my outlook and book a snorkel excursion in the a.m. and then visit the market at the end of the day (4pm) if we felt like it. What a difference! When we got off our cruise ship in the morning there was another ship in port as well, and the entire "mall" was so packed you couldn't see a thing. The vendors were much more assertive and cruisers were everywhere - very chaotic. By the afternoon the Princess ship had left and the most of the folks on the Celebrity were back on board cooling off... so we could wander about. I had my 80-yr old mom with us - she tried in the morning but was so overwhelmed she went back on board... but we coaxed her out in the afternoon and like I said, such a difference she couldn't believe it. My husband hates markets/shopping and was along basically to keep an eye on my Mom. As he was waiting while we bought our vanilla, cocoa and spices, a local man struck up a quick conversation with him. Of course they like to "escort" you all around in hopes for getting a tip and usually we avoid this, but this time we just enjoyed meeting Earl, and decided it was pretty fun to listen to his tales. He walked us all through the spice market (even though we had already bought most of our stuff) and knew a lot of the vendors. Since we were so laid back, it was fun to talk to the people and learn if they had something new or different. Sure enough, one woman had nutmeg syrup which we had not noticed before (yummy), banana ketchup (haven't tried it yet, but hey --- something different) and one told us at length how to use raw vanilla bean so we bought a few to show the kids. Earl told us to put our spice "garland" on our neck, so the vendors know we already had bought things, and he stopped traffic as we crossed the busy streets. He was so friendly and just talked away - introduced my Mom to lots of the vendors - it was really different than skirting people and trying to avoid eye contact as you peruse the stalls. We gave him $5 and he was really thrilled. So, I'm just saying --- you're on vacation. Have fun. The people are indeed just trying to support their families and have a small window of time to do so (when the boats are in port). Afternoons are always better - even for making deals - and if a friendly guy wants to talk and walk with you, for the price of a Starbucks - it is worth it!

The St George's market would get better ratings from not just me but other tourists if the sellers did not hassle the buyers so much.

I have been to Grenada a few times and stay for several months when we visit. So, here is my take, you want a nice day of walking the town, seeing the sights and perusing the stalls and maybe buying a few items. But, this is not what happens. There are people hired to follow tourists to try to get them to go to their stalls. You escape the pressure to buy everything from everyone who calls out to you only to be pressured by taxi drivers and mini bus drivers to take a ride. Then the shopkeepers have people who will approach you asking you to follow them to their stores. IF you get through this gauntlet there is always someone who will hit you up by panhandling. There are local prices and tourist prices which I find inappropriate. The vendors will push hard and when you say no they get upset. It is not a relaxing, enjoyable day.

I perfectly understand and appreciate that people need to make a living. My complaint is that I am not an ATM machine walking the streets ready to buy from everyone. I do not see the locals getting hassled, just the people who look like tourists.

It takes away from the pleasure and beauty of the island. I avoid going downtown whenever I can as do many of my friends who visit Grenada regularly. There are other markets on the island--just ask a tour guide or local. I wish the Chamber of Commerce would read tripadvisor.

We came on a cruise, and honestly Grenada was the one stop where I hadn't really researched the island on what we should do, so we ended up getting off the ship without a plan and that was mistake #1. All of the people in town are extremely pushy with the tourists. We were hounded by taxi drivers, peddlers, etc... Eventually a man told a bunch of them that they need to stop bothering us, and he introduced himself as someone who worked on the tourism board in Grenada. He asked us to come visit his mother who was selling spices, and then he wanted to show us the fish market...before we knew it, this man, Randy, had tricked us into taking us on a walking tour of St. Georges. We would see other people with other "guides" on the walking tour, and all of the guides would say to us "I see you're with Randy, he's the best!"
Well he sure was. I ended up buying him a beer, and after he had taken us on a 2 hour long tour that I never intended on going on, he expected a tip. I no joke had $14 cash in my pocket, and I told him I'm sure he was expecting more but that's all I had. He suggested going to an ATM machine, and that generally people would give him $75 for the tour he took us on... Again, we never asked to go on this tour.
I went to the ATM, only to have a litany of problems with it, where I was basically double charged for my withdrawal. After it was over I immediately went back to the ship.
All of this to say, unless you have a plan, I'd be extremely careful waltzing through here, people are just waiting to take advantage of you.
