- desiree61Lethbridge, Canada40 contributionsAmazing how the original way of making rum still exists in these days of so much technology. The process was fascinatingThe distillery was amazing and to think the rum is made in the original way back in the 1700’s blows your mind in these times of so much technology. The actual machine that crushes the sugarcane is the original piece of equipment, it is mind blowing! You get to sample 69% proof and 75% proof rum. You can purchase the 69% to take home. The stronger rum is just for consumption on the IslandVisited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 November 2023
- Shelley KGreenwich, Connecticut131 contributionsDon't miss out on stopping here!We had a lovely visit to River Antoine. Be sure to take the tour and visit during the week (but not lunchtime!) to get up and close to the daily rum making happening in front of you. There are no set tour times – they take groups as they come – and our tour guide was kind, informative, and genuine. Please note – if you’re driving yourself, there is not a sign on the road for the driveway. Take the driveway that goes alongside what looks like a stone building and keep taking the road back. You’ll find it!Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 February 2024
- Sarah GFolkestone, United Kingdom364 contributionsLovely rum distillery tourVisited as part of P&O excursion having been to Belmont Estate first off. I have to say this place was brilliant. The way they make the rum is proper “old school” way The smell of sugar cane being processed was really sweet. The guide we had was informative and explained the whole process from sugar cane to bottled rum. The tasting at the end was great although I only tried the 69% version and even that was strong so I dread to think what the 75% was like!Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 24 February 2024
- JulesbSouthLondonCoulsdon, United Kingdom270 contributionsGreat tour and well worth a visitWe really enjoyed the tour we did at the River Antoine Estate Rum Distillery. We learnt a lot about the history and were shown around. All the processes were explained to us by the guide from sugar cane to bottled run. The tasting was fun but the rum was undrinkable at 69% and 75% and was far too strong.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 7 May 2024
- arp79New Albany, Indiana59 contributionsTake a walk in time through Rivers DistilleryWhile my family and I reign from the land of Bourbon Distilleries, taking a tour of Rivers Distillery was like a walk in time. You have to respect the time and energy that is used to make this very very strong rum. Even the wheel that is used to power the crushing of the sugar cane is original from the time the distillery was established. My dad was not able to join us on the tour. Walking through the facility was challenging for him but he did enjoy the rum tasting that is presented at the end. About 1600 bottles a day are produced out of the distillery, and can only be purchased in Grenada. They do not export the product and that is due to how much time it takes to produce the product itself. I respect their process and how they have kept the integrity of their product and not over commercialized it. The cost to go in is minimal with the tasting included. A bottle of rum is about $19 USD. Enjoyed learning the history of not only the distillery but the island as Rivers is simply apart of Grenada's history.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 30 July 2024

On a tour of the Island, I wanted to go here because it was a small independent distillery. Three girls were sitting outside on their phones. One informed us that the machinery was being repaired so we could do a tour but we would not see all of the workings of the factory. So I asked if we could sample the Rum and for a small fee we got to sample only two Rums as one was out of production due to the machinery being broken. We're a friendly bunch and I really tried to engage with these girls but the sandwich man arrived and they seemed more interested in that than anything else. I asked one lady if this was the place visited by "Ainsley Harriot" because I really enjoyed that program and the lady seemed so relaxed and interested in the Rum and the history of the Distillery on this program. Sadly the surly girl's boredom at the tourists was evident. We did purchase the Rum Punch which is an excellent product. Our driver told us the other Rum on sale is cheaper in the supermarket!

We had a fascinating tour of the distillery and great insight into its workings. However, it wasn't working - all closed down for maintenance. Wonderful, knowledgable and amusing tour guide but at the end there was only one rum to taste - a white rum at 69% abv. We were recommended to down it in one - quite understandable because if you tried to sip it, you'd never finish it.

A great addition to any trip to this fabulous island!
The distillery is very much of a fully-working museum, you are seeing a process underway which hasn’t changed in hundreds of years. This isn’t some polished tourist trap and much the better for it.
Our guide was top notch, with a very thorough knowledge of the process and history, he kept us informed and entertained!
The free samples at the end of the trip certainly blow the cobwebs away! The trip is excellent value for money.

Super interesting tour of the oldest working rum distillery 1785 in Grenada from harvested sugar cane to final product. They produce an agricole rum (so not a sipping rum) but their tours are excellent and up close with each of the steps in the process. We’ve done a number of rum distillery tours in the Caribbean and this one is among the best. All for a mere $5EC pp including the tasting of their 2 rums.
We drove there and just a heads up, when you arrive the first building by the road is their closed restaurant. There is zero signage and we almost left because we thought the distillery was closed. Continue on down the road past the first building and the sugarcane crusher and around the bend you will see the distillery at the back of the property.

Definitely in the top 3 places to visit in Grenada. Built in 1700s, with a working water mill, it was impressive on the amount of gallons of rum they produce. They produce about 2400 gallons of Rum per tank and they have 9 tanks and the end to end process of grinding sugarcane to rum being bottled is just 10 days. And all of those bottles are not even exported as the local demand is so much that they can’t distill enough rum even for their own island. 2400 gallons x 9 tanks only for the small island of Granda and that’s not even enough to keep up with the local demand? Wow! That’s mind boggling.
They produce 75% and 68% proof rum. They let you sample at the end and the 75% proof was just… oof! Hard to handle. They show the process of grinding the sugarcane, boiling it, fermenting it, distilling it, and then bottling it. The most amazing part of all of this is that its all done manually till date. Just wow! A must visit.

When we arrived we were quickly given a tour guide who took us through the distillery and explained the process to us. Very rustic, but effective. After the tour we were offered a tasting. Our guide was friendly and fun. We drove to the distillery from St. George in our rental car, it's at least an hour and a half drive.

What a cool tour! Rivers has the oldest working water wheel in the Caribbean. I learned so much about traditional rum making, and you can really taste the difference. This rum is truly "beyond organic." A very unique experience!
PLEASE NOTE - if you buy a bottle, you're either going to have to finish it before leaving the island or put the UNOPENED bottle in a checked bag (even if you're just island hopping and not technically leaving Grenada).

Took the tour here as part of a guided tour around the island. Fascinating experience to see a process that's apparently unchanged since 1785. The sugar cane is put through a crusher that is powered by a large water wheel, then fermented in huge vats, and finally distilled in big copper stills. I tasted the 69% and 75% rum. The strong stuff is definitely rocket fuel! Super smooth and potent.

Can you bring this rum back to US as “carry on” duty free?
Written 13 February 2020
They do sell a lower proof rum that is legal to carry on planes. We brought one back to the USA with us after our October 2019 visit to the distillery.

Is this the distillery that Royal Caribbean cruise lines shore excurstions takes? Thanks, Chris
