    Amazing private tour by Moctezuma
A beautiful and magical place to visit. The only access is by boat. Tours are available, but if you like it a little more private we found a nice option. We arrived in Sabana del Mar by car and met Moctezuma close to the harbour. He took us to the parking spot at the start of the mangroves, and we went in his small boat for a private tour with excellent guiding in English. The caves, birds and hanging cliffs are all amazing.

Beautiful national park well worth a visit.
This is a beautiful natural park. It takes a bout 30 minutes by boat to arrive from the Samana Peninsula. It is well worth the time and effort. Minutes after arriving at the entrance we saw a manatee feeding just off shore. There are several small islets with hundreds of birds of different species including herons, frigates, vultures and pelicans. There are some interesting caves to explore and the kayak ride through the mangroves was beautiful.

    Breath taking scenery
Took part of a tour of the national park, including the caves and a nice stop on an island for lunch. The national park is beautiful!!! The tour guide and staff were very knowledgeable and helpful. We even got to see a whale along the way. The trip was both relaxing and fun. Highly recommend but keep in mind it is a full day, we were picked up at 730am and returned at 7pm

A 5 star park experience with 2 star transportation
This destination deserves 5 stars, it was fantastic. But there were two transfers between vehicles to get there, one of them at the side of the highway. We asked ahead of time via whatsapp, for vehicle details, but it was hard to get accurate information. On to Las Haitises - fabulous! The mangroves, the boat trip, the views, the cliffs, the caves, the aboriginal markings, the lunch stop, our guide, everything was excellent. We debated between this trip and Saona. I'm fairly sure this was quite a different trip. Our guide was great but spoke a lot of Spanish (fair enough bcs we were with some Spanish speaking tourists). We both speak some limited Spanish so it wasn't a big problem for us, but may be for others. One surprise on the way home that is both good and bad. We stopped at a parking lot and were told to get into a safari truck. I thought for a moment we were being transferred yet again! Grrr. But this was not the case. just bad communications. They took us on a wild ride up Montana Redondo, to a 300m high peak with a fabulous view. Thankfully the tour van was still there to get us home. Overall a terrific day, I cannot say enough about Las Haitises National Park. But the transfers were not good. The operators keep that part quiet so as not to lose business.

Really recommend checking this place out, especially if you can either get there by boat or get out on the water from the park. Really interesting and beautiful little islands, lots of birds. Natural caves with some vestiges of the Taino, the indigenous people that were wiped out by the Europeans. The lodge is gorgeous.

My husband and i took the Los Haitises excursion with THOMSON holidays and thankfully lived to regret it... I say thankfully because we were involved in a very scary and potentially fatal accident while on the return journey from the Park. The national park is reached by boat due to its location, the journey to the park was a bit bumpy due to choppy waters but uneventful but the return journey was something else entirely... When we left the park we overheard the tour guide and the crew comment that we were running late , everyone settled down the the ride back and off we went . We commented that we thought the boat was being driven too fast for the conditions , it was a twin hull leisure craft , typical twin outboard motors, by no means a sports or power boat but this guy was really pushing it. We kept hearing an repeating beeping noise which we later learned to be an alarm to warn that the outboard motors were getting hot.
The sea was much rougher on the return journey and we were being buffeted around by the waves and wind, people were getting soaked with seawater so some yellow jackets were handed out but we didn't slow down. We noted one lady who did look very upset and worried , clinging on and trying to cover herself with one of these jackets. After about 15 minutes of this the driver stopped the boat to tell 2 guys who were riding on the front of the boat to come inside as the sea was getting rougher and it was raining pretty hard too , we had already voiced our concerns that they were out there under such conditions as it would have been very easy to have lost grip and been washed over the side. what happened next can only be described as a nightmare.....
the driver started the motors again and pushed the throttle ( or whatever its called ) full on , we could hear this alarm going off again and then within minutes there was a huge bang and i looked back to see the top of the outboard motor bouncing across the waves on fire a flames shooting out the back of the boat. What entailed next was pure chaos, not one member of the crew seemed to have any idea what they were doing , they ran to the back of the boat ran back to get a fire extinguisher which when deployed lasted no more than 4 seconds ( obviously NOT serviced so under pressurized ) this was then discarded to roll around the boat. The fire was extinguished using a bucket and seawater but the fuel line was still pumping fuel onto 2 hot engines. One crew member had gone below deck we think with the intention of shutting the fuel off but was hollering up for help so we think he didnt know how to do so. There was so much noise and people standing up and shouting and plain getting underfoot that we had to shout at everyone to shut up and sit down so they could hear themselves think. They then shut the fuel off and called for help... ON A MOBILE PHONE ! ... NO ship to shore radio , NO working fire equipment , NO organisation ... we had to make the decision to retrieve and put on a life jacket ourselves as the crew just took NO responsibility at all. The only person who seemed to have any thought to communicate with the passengers was the tour guide.
We had to wait for 25 minutes for another boat to come and transfer us to safety... Land was 30 minutes away.
I have left some of the finer details out of this but in essence there was NO health and safety precautions, the Crew clearly had NO training and there was minimal safety equipment on board ... Really just life jackets.
Please be aware that THOMSON endorse these trips , we were told not to book our trips elsewhere as in the words of our rep ... It will be unlikely that they will be safe or insured !
We obviously made a complaint immediately on our return to the hotel , the rep refused to come back to the Island ( we were based on Cayo Levantado ) so we had to wait til the following day.
And the worst part .................. They were still selling this same trip the very next day with NO checks to ensure appropriate action had been taken to ensure their customers safety.

Beautiful area, not visited by many tourists. Drive to sabana del mar and then turn left where you see the sign to the park. Expect about 12 km of a dirt road. When you get to the park there are a lot of private guides who will take you on a boat ride through tha Mangroves, to see 2 caves with paintings made by the native Indians. They charge 45$ per person, for a 2.5 hours tour. Bring some water with you, because there is no where to buy drinks. It is a great place to see birds and bats. We drove to sabana del mar from santo Domingo. The GPS said 2 hours but it was more like 4. Highway 4 is pretty good, it goes to Hato Mayor, and from there you continue on road 103 which is pretty bad. Many parts are not paved and there are many pot holes, but the way is spectacular. Amazing view and small interesting villages. Highly recommended!

Los Haitises National Park was stunning and our trip highlight; gorgeous drive, 3 caves (one is a small cenote in which you can swim), petroglyphs and pectrographs, 2 .5 private beaches, navigating numerous "Vietnam-like"' rocky vegetated hills (mogotes), mangrove swamps, snack and a great lunch; 8am-4pm $55US, half for kids (booked off-site-see below)

Note:
I never write reviews. This is my first. What propelled me to do it is that we were so impressed with our tour company that I promised I would comment about it on the internet, and hence, this note.
We often avoid tours from the hotel due to the higher costs and less flexibility in times we want to spend exploring. It really paid off on this trip. Out of curiousity, I popped into Flora Tours (www.flora-tours.net) while visiting Las Terrenas and met Nicolas W. He offered a discount for travelling with a family of 9. Without any hype or attempts of persuasion, he described a trip that offered more experiences for less money (even without the discount) than what was offered at the hotel. He never asked for any money until near the end of the trip (as you may know, there are many tourist stories of people paying a deposit in advance, only never to be picked up). The crew (especially Henry) were knowledgeable, enthusiastic, respectful and efficient. I like the little things like asking everyone to be quiet in the mangroves for a few minutes to hear the wildlife-OK we heard a distant boat but still. The boats were fast, stable (they said Amilka Tours on them), the lunch was at a gorgeous little-known beach and estate type house with good food (I was expecting this part of the trip to be a compromise for the lower price). There were no shortcuts. Exceeded our expectations. (This probably sounds like an endorsement, but I promise, we are not affiliated with them in any way.)

Reviews I read suggested organizing your own tours with locals, but that seemed like a headache. The tours Air Canada Vacations offers are reasonably priced and hassle-free.

The tour of Los Haitises National Park ($95) starts with a motorboat ride across the bay of Samaná. But the first half of that ride was slow, as the guide talked our ears off in English AND French about the history of the park and respecting the environment. The information was not without interest, but it should've been relayed in half the time. Rum, Coke, and Sprite are served on the boat. The park is home to pelicans and other birds, as well as mangroves. One woman selfishly sat on the boat's prow, potentially blocking people's views. Do not be like this woman.

We made two stops to visit very interesting caves. Caution: the floors are very slippery in there. There were some hieroglyphics, some of which seemed questionable to us. This tour would've benefited from being with a much smaller group. It would have been easier to bask in nature's glory without having to hear the chatter of two dozen people (some of whom were drunk). But I realize that's not feasible for a tour company trying to make money.

After the park, we got dropped off at Cayo Levantado island for about two hours. They gave us a meal, which I'd heard was delicious, but it was just average. Then we headed to the white-sand beach, which was nice. There are people aggressively selling souvenirs on the island, but they're in their own easy-to-avoid section.

Things you might need for this tour:
-your camera
-a towel (or let the sun dry you)
-money (if you want to purchase alcohol at the meal, tip the boat captain, or buy souvenirs)
-Wear your bathing suit instead of shorts.
-I recommend wearing shoes instead of flip-flops, for walking to and through the caves.

When planning our trip to the DR, this attraction was the most difficult for me to find good information on how to get there... Having said that, I found out that you can book any number of different tour packages ranging in price from $70 to $195 (I'm sure more if you look!) We decided to try and wing it and hire our own boat. This process was really easy. Once you go down to the boat dock in Samana, there are 2 or 3 guys who are the "lead" people in trying to match up travelers with boat operators. Those guys speak fairly good English and will get you matched up with a boat and driver to do exactly what you want to do. We didn't have all day for a tour, so we were looking for a boat that would take us right to the park, tour around then come back. We didn't want to go to Cayo Levantado--several of the tours had that as a 2 or 3 hour stop. You have to be very firm in telling them what you want.

We ended up getting a boat with a driver and guide for $65 each (there were just 2 of us.) In our case, it was o.k. that the guide spoke mostly Spanish as my partner speaks Spanish and I can understand quite a bit. If we would have wanted to, we could have hired an additional guide that was fluent in English for $20 more per person. $85 for a private boat ride is a pretty good price!

The boat ride is about 40 minutes across the bay. On the way back, there was a squall line and the water was wavy--we ended up getting a little wet (no big deal.) Since we were in a small boat, we were able to visit a couple of the places that larger boats cannot get into.

The park visit itself was pretty cool. We liked the caves and cave drawings as well as the mangroves. There is a small fee to get into the park. You'll pay that directly to the park operator once you cross the bay.
