Altos de Chavon, is an architectural wonder, a 16th century replica of a Mediterranean village perched high above the Chavón River. The village was designed by Dominican architect Jose Antonio Caro, and created by Italian master designer and cinematographer Roberto Coppa. Dominican artisans handcrafted the stone pathways, decorative ironwork, furniture and enchanting buildings, reviving almost forgotten crafts of metal work and stone carving. Under Coppa's direction, each stone was hand cut, each wooden door frame was handcrafted and each wrought-iron detail hand-forged. Construction of the village began in 1976 and the village was inaugurated in 1982 with the concert of Frank Sinatra at the amphitheater. Altos de Chavon was built as a center of culture for the Dominican people. Dominican residents, tourists and working artists, flock to this magically inspirational locale.

Altos de Chavon is a fascinating destination. Buildings and arena have the feel of an old European city. Beautifully situated above Rio Chavon it is remarkably beautiful. Great for a lazy morning or afternoon stroll. Restaurants and shops are mixed into the area. There is a Pete Dye golf course, Dye Fore, that is visable from the village. I didn't... More

We went here with the Parson's School of Design for an Antonio Lopez Fashion Illustration workshop. It's like being in an old European village. Quaint places to eat and drink, Friendly people.

Village constructed to look like colonial period. Shops, craft institute, jewelry with native stone and amber. Chapel with Sunday masses and weddings. A couple restaurants and bars. Visited during day and then returned in evening for wedding. Entry free. Chapel small and crowded for 80 guests. Nice setting. Worth a visit. 20 minutes by cart from hotel. Remember, this is... We payed 5 dollars a person and just the taxi. We were 4 adults and a baby. It was more then worth it. I would have been happy with just the great views you get from so high up on the mountain, the rivers, the other mountains...its really nice, then when you factor all the other scenery to take in,... The food was amazing with some wonderful wine selections. The variety on the menu was so overwhelming but good.

I visit this place most than 35 years ago. My kids wanted to see. They love the theater and it history. A lot of Nature and the beauty of D.R. you can appreciate here.

We got here with no expectations after we tried to find a way to spend a day out of the hotel, since the weather was bad.. We absolutely loved it! For some reason we were the only ones there and it was really romantic.. We walked around the old reconstructed village, with an amazing view and took lots of amazing... More

We liked it but I think it's better to come here in the evening. We had it in the morning in our programm and everything was closed .

Re creation of a roman artisan's village complete with amphitheatre that has featured concerts by big stars, many restaurants and shops with a very special atmosphere. Prices can be high but very much worth it. Must experience it if you are in the area !

A stunning reconstructed village overlooking the Rio Chavon. Wonderful restaurants and shopping and museum. Papa Jack's Bar is still there and thriving!
