About
Amber Cove is a port destination and cruise terminal that's popular with travelers visiting the northern coast of the Dominican Republic. It's a great place to stop and do some duty-free shopping, with plenty of deals on clothing and souvenirs. But that's not all—you can also soak up the sun by the pool and swim-up bar, or rent a cabana by the beach. If you're feeling adventurous, you can take a snorkeling tour to explore the vibrant Caribbean reefs. The rainy season is from May to October, so visit in the dry season for the best experience. – Tripadvisor

- 1952jaMassachusetts128 contributionsDefinitely give it a goExcellent. We've been to the DR many times, but this was a first to Amber Cove and it definitely has a little something for everyone. Shops for those that want retail, places to eat for the foodies, etc. Water park area for those wanting poolside have great accommodations pool chairs, umbrellas, lazy river pool, poolside bar, bar and restaurant service from your lounge. It was well worth going especially since you only need to pay for what you want. No cover charges etc.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 22 January 2024
- Wendy T18 contributionsFriendly locals, lots to do and see.We went to Amber Cove on a cruise. Very nice area. The locals are friendly and Ocean World is a must, especially if you have children! The staff at Ocean World were amazing and helpful with my son who is in a wheelchair. I highly recommend Amber Cove, with the nice locals, beaches, shops and Ocean World.Visited April 2023Travelled with familyWritten 27 February 2024
- HospitalityProsTennessee344 contributionsGreat Port for exploring for cruise ship passengersOne of four stops during our 8 day Carnival Cruise. The waterpark and pools at Amber Cove make for a relaxing day for all ages. We rented two umbrellas and got two waterslide passes for our kids. (About $70) The lazy river and pools are clean and well kept. Us adults loved the swim up bar and attentive service by all staff. Restaurants on site from hotdogs to seafood. A little something for everyone. They have water sports activities for extra $$ or rent a private poolside cabana or one over the water. The shopping at Amber Cove offers something for everyone from souvenirs to diamonds and rum. The property is spotless, no beggars and we felt perfectly safe the entire time we were there. Overall a big thumbs up and a great way to spend the day!Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 12 March 2024
- Venture1053163515413 contributionsNice beach day, great value.Lots to do at Amber Cove. We choose a day at the Senator. All inclusive $68 per person, included towels, beach chairs. Unlimited drinks and food. Lots of pools to use, beach is rocky so use water shoes, great for snorkeling. Take a taxi, don't walk and get lost..I would not recommend the free beach..it was very dirty Lots of trash. Luckily a security guard took us to the Senator!! Beautiful resort.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 21 April 2024
- Sightseer779040495 contributionsPool area to hang, otherwise stay on the shipThis is a Carnival Corporation owned gated area. Only Carnival, Princess, and Holland America ships dock here. There can be up to 2 ships at a time. The area that is cruise owned is right there with the pool area and the shops. Beyond the gates is the rest of the Dominican and taxi’s to Puerto Plata which would be the main city there. If you choose to stay in the cruise ship area, to the left is the shopping area. There are many different shops like clothes, chocolate, jewlery, cigars, etc. To the right is the pool area. The pool is large with a lazy river type concept but without the current. The only shade is really under the bridges and those areas get taken quickly. The pool is nice and refreshing. They also play music and do some pool party vibes. Get there early if you can to get prime lounge chair seating in the shade and get into a still empty pool. Once both cruise ships have more people getting off, most of the loungers get taken (and there are a lot) and the pool becomes people soup. There is also a splash pad area for the kiddos. There is a swim up bar which is cool but has outrageous prices. They also serve food at the restaurant with outrageous prices also. There is a skyview bar that you can walk up to for some good views and drinks as well. There are two waterslides that cost $5 for unlimited rides all day. The lines were long. There is also a zipline that literally goes over the pool for $45/person or something and lasts like 30 seconds. Also you could rent umbrellas for your pool chairs somewhere in the neighborhood of $30. It was cool to walk around and see the forested beauty of the domincan (from what you can see there) and it was cool to check out the shops. But I think next time if you aren’t taking an excursion then you are better off just staying on the ship and having a relaxing empty pool day on the ship.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 6 June 2024
- Shelia OChicago, Illinois12 contributionsGreat time in Amber Cove and beyond. If on a cruise leave the port and search out an excursion. Much cheaper than those offered thru the cruise line. We found Amber Cove to be beautiful and clean. We left the Cove for a tour to Puerta Plata. So enjoyed the tour and our tour guide Pablo. I advise taking a shore excursion. They have the same stores selling you the same merchandise as every other port and on-board the ship. There is no beach on the property, you have to take an excursion or a cab to a beach which will cost approximately $10 per person one way, by cab. You have to walk pretty far off their property to get to local cabs. There is nothing nearby you can walk to. If you stay at the port complex; which is new and clean, you're not getting the true feeling of the island. Of course a lot of people are worried to go out and explore on their own. That's the only way to get the true feeling of the area. Sp, be brave people-you just might learn something and enjoy yourself !!

Nice Port area a lot of shops and a couple of restaurants. When getting off the ship you see a lot of people dancing and music is playing. They have a nice little waterfall a restaurant with a pool and waterslide. They have a cool coffee shop and plenty of places for souvenirs. They even have a zipline for $20. And of course plenty of photo ops

The port of Amber Cove is a recently created locale made expressively for cruise ships to dock. It is located 5 miles from the nearest DR town.
Amber Cove has cute shops, a water fall photo opp, a large blue Amber Cove sign where people line up for minutes just to take a picture there, etc.
For good Wi/Fi reception the turquesa shop there has people standing around to check their mail.
There is not much more to do here and its advised to take a tour by A/C taxi to get a real flavour of theDR outside the port here.

This is a brand new port in the Dominican Republic. The actual dock is very interesting built on a hillside with a very large pool, and beautifully laid out shopping area, and restaurants built on the hill, and all in the enclosed dock area.
We took a private tour..$60 US.just a short walk outside the main gate, with
ShoreTrips.com.A mini bus was waiting for us,on the main road, and with one other couple we had a very enjoyable tour.
First we toured Puerto Plata, which had changed amazingly since I was last there, then we went to a very large beach, with very few people there.Included was the beach chairs,an umbrella and a bottle of water.
There was a restaurant and bar on the beach, where we ate delicious quesadillas.
I would definitely take this companies tours again,as everyone was so informative and friendly.and looked after us so well.

We arrived in Amber cove in the morning, greeted by loud music! There are shore excursions but we had been there before. the. The port has been developed to a shopping location, nothing to buy worth anything, but it was a chance to get off the ship and walk around. When another ship is in port at the same time, it is very busy crowded . Ok for a port callk, but nt a long stay.
Reference CODV- 19, it was not mention by the ship or local personnel. If you go I would check at your home to see what the latest is.

Amber Cove was our favorite stop on our cruise! Resort style pool, large restaurant, few bars including one in the pool and one up very high for awesome views, water slides, zip line, hammocks, cabanas to rent, water sports. The shopping area had several nice stores like Del Sol, Taste of Dominican and Pirana Joe's. But it was just beautiful. Two waterfalls, water streamed walkway, trees, foliage, flowers the entire landscape was beautiful. The employees in both the water park and shopping district were all friendly and helpful. Our Carnival Conquest ship docked right there and we walked to it. While others were busy booking and getting to excursions, our group was already enjoying our day in the sun listening to great music! Plenty of chairs, good food. Bring money...it's not cheap to spend the day there if you want eat and drink. By far our best day of the cruise.
FYI- while the ocean is right there for you to see and be close to, but there is no beach access from Amber Cove. We did not mind as we swam in the large pool and sun bathed all day!
One warning, the water slides are very fun but there is a weight limit (250 I believe it was) and we did see someone get denied access to it. They will weigh you if in doubt.

I visited this port via the Carnival Horizon. I browsed the area prior to my scheduled beach excursion to Coconut Cove (about 40 minutes away). The Amber Cove pier, which was recently built by Carnival, has plenty of shops and also a separate area containing dining, pool & swim up bar, and plenty of cots & cabanas to relax.

We visited Amber Cove in December 2021 and had a blast. We were initially disappointed that the cable cars were not running. We enjoyed what was to be a rum tasting tour that ended up taking us on a driving and walking tour of the city, stops at 4 locations for rum tasting, a cigar shop where we were given a free Dominican cigar if we wished and an extra stop at a coffee/chocolate shop. The people were friendly. There was a free beach area just off the pier which had a small bar. Not a lot of shops open right at the pier. There were plenty of offerings by both the ship and private tours. I'm not sure what folks were looking for when they leave reviews there is nothing to do. Beautiful port. As we departed, locals were at the fort/point with flashlights waving goodbye to our ship. Can't wait to visit again.

We docked at Amber Cove last week on the NCL Getaway. This was a change from Porta Plata - where we visited in Dec. Having never been to this port, we weren't sure what to expect. It looked very new, and was in excellent shape. Amber Cove has the traditional collection of shops/stores you find in other Caribbean ports of call. We opted for the Wild Truck ride, and enjoyed it. These vehicles are open aired, but covered, which is nice. It's not really "wild", but more of a bumpy ride over dirt roads. You go through mostly lower income rural areas stopping a couple of times to shop at stalls selling items (reasonably priced) of local vendors. The two stops do not take credit cards, so bring $$$. US dollars are gladly accepted. One of the last stops is about a 2-2 1/2 hour rest with lunch included. We did have to pay for alcoholic drinks, however, I believe they also have a package option that includes beverages. This stop is on the beach with plenty of lounge chairs and umbrellas. Be sure to hit the bathroom before boarding the ride back to the ship, as it's about an hour (or more) with no stops over those rough roads.

I was here as one of the stops on a Carnival cruise. We went on snorkel trip on a catamaran that was just ok. The sky was overcast so I did not go into the water. People getting back on the boat said it was hard to see the fish, but there were a lot of them. Lunch on board was good and the duty free right on the pier was very handy.

We have family that live local and were wondering if there is a way for them to come and join us at Amber Cove for the afternoon?
Written 10 December 2022
I cannot find a definitive answer, but being it is a cruise port, I believe it is only open to cruisers, not locals. You should contact Carnival directly.

Does Anyone have the recent OUTSIDE return
taxi fare to get to puerto plata? I’ve seen some old posts suggesting $40, just wondering if this is still Correct? (We do not want to be paying $35 each way for the ‘official’ fixed rates :)
