Right in front of the museum
Jun. 2021
Excellent plaza in front of the museum. Great area to look out at the water and see art sculptures. I definitely recommend going into the museum and checking things out.

The first sun clock in the Americas
Jan. 2020
The sun clock is located in front of the Museum of the Royal Houses, in the eastern section of the Colonial Zone. The ancient clock is a simple columnar structure with a semi circular shape on top. On the western and southern sides of the clock are sun dials and numbered markings. On the western side are numbers from 12 to 8, which signify the afternoon times of the clock. The southern section was used to tell time between sunrise and mid-day. The dials on the clock are original, but the equatorial dial on top is a replacement for the original which was damaged in a hurricane.

The clock was built in 1753 by Francisco Rubio y Peñaranda. A plaque at the base of the clock was installed in 1928, and confirms this fact. The clock is strategically positioned so that the occupiers of the nearby Palace of the Captain General could tell the accurate time. The Palace is now known as the Museum of the Royal Houses. On the wall behind the clock is a sun chart titled,"Royal Houses". It shows the 12 hour cycle of the sun.

This area has many attractions, including Plaza de España, a short walk north. The house of the Jesuits, the National Panteon and the Chapel of Our Lady of Remedies are all found on nearby Calle Las Damas.

Amazing how it really tells the time!!
Sep. 2019 • Solo
I can’t remember how old this sun clock is, but it was amazing how it told the time and it was so easy to read when the sun was hitting the clock! Being at the end of the Street of the women o “Calle de las Damas” it was great to walk by it, read the time, make some photos and continue our tour. Mr Peralta was a great tour guide that I met at the Plaza Colón! He took me to more than 10 important places explaining each one explicitly for tow ours every day for two days! I liked the view of the other side of the pier from here also! The small building you see at the other side of the water was the first church of all the Americas that was made in wood and rebuilt by the Dominicans because it was falling apart.

Old sundial - still working
Apr. 2019 • Couples
Tuesday16th April we were on a day tour of Santo Domingo, we took a short walk from Palacio Virreinal de Diego Colón, in Plaza de Espana, to see the Panteon de la Patria on Calle Las Damas.

Having descended a number of steps from Plaza de Espana we continued on our route which took us past this old timepiece, which is located in Plazoleta del Reloj del Sol (Sun Clock Little Square). It stands in a large paved plaza by the he banks of the Ozama River, overlooking the Ferry Port and across from the Museum of the Royal Houses.

It felt like we were walking along the ramparts of the old City with its gun emplacements with old cannons sited there.

There were life size metal sculptures of horses nearby.

Amazingly this old sundial is still operational. Well worth stopping here and enjoying the atmosphere and the sights.

Lovely old sun dial
Jan. 2019 • Family
This is a beautiful old sun dial in the plaza in front of the palace. The view from the ballroom is lovely as well. There are some unique iron horses and bulls there as well you can take pics with. The sun dial does not completely work but its a must see.

Ancient sunclock and still working. Also old cannons on their sites. Plaza de España is close. You can sit down in some of those restaurants, take some drink and watch the people.

Old Sun Dial
Nov. 2017 • Couples
This is one of many historical points of interest in the old area although it is not well signed and presented. The old sun dial sits at the edge of the fort wall amid some old canons and is interrsting if you knew what it was.
