Sketchy. It is a walkable pedestrian street, but nothing I'd make a special trip for. We found a local shop to stop for drinks/coffee. They do have the Dominican doll sculptures set up along the street which is neat.

Regular shopping street, nothing special. It has some sequirity guars with guns. Its not really safe outside of it (especially in area to the south-west from it).
There is also "Nacional" supermarket on this street. Not the best prices, but anyway, pretty attractive.

I was approached by a man known as King Solomon while I was looking at souvenirs. He said he owns a salon on Calle Santomé that was 1 min away & wants to show me where it's located so I can book in for a treatment. The moment I literally stepped into the salon a man immediately started rubbing an exfoliate cream on my arm. I told him that I only came here to see the salon but he ignored what I said n continued rubbing the product on my arm insisted that he's going to do my feet too. He then tried to put cream on my face and at that point I told him to stop and mentioned I don't want my face touched. He then told the assistant to remove the product from my arms.
Once removed he then told me that it was 2000 pesos for the cream he put on my arm. As I was alone I didn't want to argue as I had 2 men towered over me as well as having my passport, mobile and cash in my bag so I felt that I had no choice but to pay as I didn't want to suffer the consequences. 1 of the guys also demanded that I tipped him after I made the payment.
Please be aware of people approaching you and offering to give you treatments. They are scammers! It's all planned! They prey on tourists, especially female, I have been in the DR for 6 weeks now and have regularly visited beauty salons and have not been subjected to this sort of bad behaviour.
I hope this post can help others.

Another "first thing" in SD - this is namely the first pedestrian street in the Americas.
It is in the SD very center stretching in east-west direction and while exploring the Zona Colonial you'll pass it (or part of it) anyway.
It's an ordinary, under average pedestrian shopping street. I did not notice big chain brands (if you're for that go to Agora shopping mall), but rather local stores. Souvenir stores are rubbish with pretty ugly souvenirs and fake cigars.

Several blocks long, we started and ended most of our days here, watching people, trying different restaurants and seeing all the small shops full of different items. The main spot is by the main square, where most of the action takes place. It's always nice to talk to people, ask recommendations - everyone is ready to share information or secrets of their trade.

There is a lot of history behind Calle Conde which in english means " Count Street" . I love to go here and set dates to meet friends here whenever am in the country. Everything is within walking distance here in this part of the old city. Hotels, restaurants, shopping, seeing gorgeous ladies too! One bad experience I had in January 2016 was a Barber who ripped me off. Be on gaurd for the barbers if you need a cut select your own don't let them usher you inside that can be a disaster. If when done they wash your hair end it right there or else you will get more than you bargained for. On the positive side go out enjoy have fun!

Hi, I’m a Dominican Citizen and this is my humble yet sad review.
“Calle El Conde” used to be an Amazing place to go to for a walk, shopping (hundreds of year ago when the street were safe), eat and a lot of more stuff.
For some reason, you’ll feel very uncomfortable walking alone at day or night these days because the high rate of... corruption?
Anyways, I’m not trying to scare people, but just a reminder me this place is just fine, be careful and as a tourist, don’t let those vendors trick you with the price, they’ll try to fool you because you’re a tourist. Ask to lower the price :) always.
So.. pros ? You’ll enjoy what Dominican Republic people are, very kind (sometimes) they’ll help you whenever you need to.
We like to help others too much that it hurts. That’s what people say.

As a Dominican of origin, I have been many times at Zona Colonial, walking for hours and hours visiting museums and those building of the First City of America.

Same street where every local walks thru on a weekly or daily basis !!! Shops, food, Dominican everyday type of life!
