The Site of the First Church in the Americas
Apr. 2021 • Family
This was a great find just walking through the colonial section of Santo Domingo. It is the site of a hospital with the church. The site was named after Saint Nicolas of Bari. It was a little sad to see the site as ruins, as I wonder what it would have been like in operation.

The coolest thing about this place is all of the parrots that have made a home in the holes in the church. Every hole had a pair of parrots in it. So cute.

Incredible experience

We took part on a guided city tour and was an incredible experience to be there and watch the damage of the flame and fire, while you listen to historical reality. Brrrr.....creepy real!

First Hospital in New World
Dec. 2018 • Friends
We viewed the ruins fo the first hospital in the New World from the sidewalk because the gate was closed. It was named for San Nicolás de Bari, the patron saint for cures. The hospital also served as a church. The church was located in the center portion while hospital rooms occupied the other area. The major event that destroyed the hospital was the 1911 hurricane. On one of the hospital ruins is a parking lot and a church on the other side. From the outside looking in, the hospital looked like it was quite an impressive facility.

First hospital
Mar. 2018 • Couples
The remains of the first hospital in the new world built by Europeans. It's a br away from other attractions and we came to it on the Road train tour. It's difficult to imagine it as a hospital and in truth we took a quick picture and moved on

Impressive Ruins
Jan. 2018 • Friends
Located a bit away from the cathedral are the ruins of what is supposedly the first "hospital" in the "New World." It's really hard to imagine as the heavy stone seems more likely to have been a church. Either way, there are generally tour guides willing to provide some information though often only in Spanish. I would imagine that this would be on the route of the normal tour guides though I'd be sure to ask if you don't get to see it.

But when you do go, try to imagine what this building must have looked like filled with people facing the realities of medieval medical treatments! It must have been something else!!

Step Back in Time

Being in the area and seeing first hand, you just wonder what type of treatments people underwent here in the late 1400's. Leaching, bloodletting, cauterization etc. Eerie feel. Amazing the ruins are still there.

Interesting History

Need to do this one with a guide otherwise the ruins mean very little you can stroll around them despite the gate being locked. Enter via the car park next door
