Still closed, March 2020

The museum is undergoing renovations and is still closed as of March 2020. The official tourist map does not state this. The Museo del Hombre Dominican is also being renovated. However they look like they will be nice once finished!

Closed--without informing the public.

The museum seems to lack a website, but several other sites indicated opening hours. I went there and found a construction site. A worker told me it was closed for now (Nov. 16, 2019). Our reception confirmed. No opening date known.

A disgrace not to properly inform the public!

Nice Cross-section of Local Art

The majority of art is Dominican, if not all of it? And includes various mediums from paintings, photography, sculptures, etc. It’s a good stop for art lovers. The museum is currently not handicapped friendly since the elevators are not functional and there are 4 floors of exhibits. It was very humid inside and it helps to go on the patios occasionally for fresh air. Otherwise, the exhibits are well worth the small entrance fee and inconveniences. The property is noticeably under maintained and showing its age. However, it is clean! This was a stately building at one time but many lights over the paintings were burned out and ceiling tiles are missing...maybe that’s an art form in itself!

Culture at its best

I enjoyed a lot of the exhibits including one titled Ozama. It was very profound and that such great art exists is a testament to the city. It is very cheap to get in and it is located by the Metro and lots of restaraunts on Av Gomez. You could make a day with the other museums on the property. A definite must see in Santo Domingo.

Apart from a class of DR kids I was the only one wondering round this museum. It not expensive and has lovely Dominican modern art. Definitely worth a trip for art fans. The staff were really helpful when there was a specific piece I wanted to find.

Architectural experience meets Dominican art

This huge building build in the architectional style of brutalism has many interesting rooms and spaces to offer but it hasn't been maintained for a long time since it's been build. Staff at the ticket office was nice. Only Spanish speaking. The ticket was only 100 pesos for two persons. This museum offers non speaking staff generally and information folders are only in Spanish as well. The styles of art varies from modern to classical art, representing some highlights of Dominican history from the colonial times to the present with portraits and scenes from Santo Domingo. There is no air condition in this building so when you reach the top floor where all the heat gathers, it is really humid inside. The current exhibition was interesting but not intriguing but it's representation. I would recommend installing aircondition, translating the information folder to English, fixing some of the lights, repainting some of the walls to give international visitors a better visual experience and better ratings for this museum.

Hidden gem

This is one of the few art museums in the city and it was really hard to find. Nonetheless, the museum was excellent and had a lot of interesting exhibits that are well worth checking out. In addition, the museum is outdated and has a feeling of stepping back in time since it's so old and not well maintained. (Which was kind of cool)

One of the few cultural things you can do in Santo Domingo
Dec. 2016 • Family
Honestly, Dominican Republic has very few cultural venues to visit. A couple of museums in the colonial part of the town and the ones in Plaza de la Cultura. Most people like to stroll in shopping malls and watch movies, that's it, there is no taste for culture. Unfortunately the museums at the Plaza de la Cultura are too hidden so most tourist overlook them. When I visited the museum it was almost empty, there were more security guards than visitors. The place smells old, outdated and forgotten. Nevertheless, the collection of local art was remarkably interesting. You can see how external movements influenced local art so they mirror what is going on outside the island. Furthermore, you can also see very peculiar art due to the insularity of the Dominican Republic. Definitively the highlight of my latest visit to DR. I have a recommendation to the local authorities : Have you thought about moving this museum to the colonial zone so more tourists become aware of its existence?

At the moment an interesting Cuban daily life photo exhibit was interesting, and the top floor had the best works of sculpture and painting depicting local life.
