The first university in the Americas
Jan. 2020
The Dominican convent is said to be the first Catholic structure in the Americas. It is located on Calle Padre Billini, in an area where there are many attractions. This beautiful structure was started in 1510 and completed in 1534. As you are walking along the street, the tall bell tower will be seen first. There are three arches at the top which display bells of different sizes. The main entrance is to the west of the church. This is the most beautiful area, as there are many designs and sculptures above the entrance doors. A service was taking place, so I didn't enter the church.

On 30 November of 1511, the church was host to the famous sermon by Fray Anton de Montesinos, who criticized the Spanish for their brutal treatment of the Indians. The convent also hosted the first university in the Americas, which was opened in 1538. The name of the university was Primada University of America. The church survived the Battle of Santo Domingo in 1586, when Francis Drake invaded and occupied Santo Domingo for a month. It has also survived earthquakes and been repaired and restored many times. There is an interesting metal sculpture of the nativity scene to the right of the church entrance. If you continue walking past this area, a popular sculpture of "Homeless Jesus" will be seen.

The Homeless Jesus sculpture is both popular and controversial. It has been installed in more than 100 cities. It depicts Jesus sleeping on a park bench with his features and body completely covered, except for his feet. The wounds on his feet ,from being nailed to the cross, is the only visible means of identification. It was installed in 2014. The first sculpture was installed in 2013 in Toronto, and copies are also found in Israel, New York, Chicago, Glasgow, Ontario and Vancouver. Other nearby attractions include Duarte Park, Fray Bartolomé de las Casas Park and Billini Park.

Interesting place!

I love the old buildings in this area of Santo Domingo. The convent was full of history and charm. It was located in a residential area that had lots of small parks. I had looked it up in my travel Guide (Moon Travel Guide to the DR) and also had searched it on Googlemaps on my phone and still almost missed it! It was very hard to find as it doesn't stand out on the street. It actually faces the parking lot so you can't see the facade from the street.

One of the beautiful old churches in the city.

I assisted two weddings in this historic church. High ceilings and no air-condition, but perfect acoustics.

We walked by this convent. It had a metal nativity display. Its very interesting with the architecture and the message of taking care of all people shown by a sculpture of a man lying on a bench.

It’s a beautiful building and if you happen to be in the area you should stop by, but I wouldn’t go the extra mile for it.

In the DR, there is very little given to people in need. This church is dedicated to helping the poor. We did not know that. There is even a beautiful sculpture out front depicting Jesus as a homeless man on a bench.
We did not give, because we did not know. Now we know and would like to pass along why this church is there!

Interesting and Historical

Must see! This is the first University and Catholic Church of the New World. This is the second time we visited Santo Domingo in these past two years. Their history is really intriguing. We took a horse carriage private tour to learn the unique history of each site. Very worth visiting.

This church is just fascinating.. goes from symbolism, architecture and history. It offers you self guided tour which is great, you can take your time and its very cheap. Eveything in there has its place on what the religion actually is... :) enjoy
