Dominica Day Trip: Indian River Rowboat Tour, Fort Shirley Ruins and Purple Turtle Beach

1 review
Discover the highlights of Dominica's northwest coast during this full-day trip from Roseau. Glide in a wooden row boat down the tranquil Indian River while looking for local wildlife like egrets and iguanas, then visit Cabrits National Park and enjoy a picnic lunch while looking out over Prince Rupert Bay. Travel to Purple Turtle Beach to spend some free time relaxing on the black volcanic sand or swimming in the turqoise water. Round-trip transportation from Roseau hotels is included.

My second time at these falls. both times have been exhausting, but one can take their time. We moved fast as we knew what awaited us at the end. One of the best plunge pools in the world.

We took a tour here with our family of 4(2 adults and a 12 and 10 year old), and we all loved it. It took us about 45 minutes . The view at the end was well worth it. It wasn’t too strenuous, and none of us felt sore after. If you’re in good shape, you’ll be able to breeze right through it.

Our little group led by a local guide were not lucky with the weather. It rained a good part of our about one hour and fifteen minutes hike from the trailhead. The rain stopped on our way back, but conditions remained slippery. You need to be rather fit to enjoy this hike, especially if it is wet. The waterfall is narrow but high, about 100 feet. You can watch it from a small platform close up.

Our family of 4 - aged 53 to 9 did this hike in crocs, climbed all the way down to the waterfall and swam in the very cool water. If you want to experience a nice quiet side of Dominica we highly recommend this experience!

The hike is no joke - we were huffing and puffing at many points during the hour in and the hour back out. You go through absolutely gorgeous jungle, with every kind of exotic tree and plant on all sides, all the time. You're likely to hear and see one of the two species of Dominican parrott overhead (we saw 5 or 6). When you reach the falls, the view is truly magnificent. No picture can come close to capturing what it really looks like. It looks just like you want a tropical waterfall to look - it's tall, there's a lot of water coming down so it's dramatic (at least on the day we were there), and it drops straight into a deep, round pool big enough for 20 people to be paddling around in. And of course, there's a ledge you can climb up to and jump from. If you want a full day of waterfall adventure, have a local guide named Sea Cat take you to three different falls - Middleham, Titou Gorge, and Trafalgar. If you're on your boat approaching Roseau, call "Sea Cat" on VHF 16, or call his cell phone: +767-245-0507. (If you're on your boat, use one of his moorings for EC$50/night, and his guys - Mr. Beans, Michael, etc. will help you with Customs, scuba diving, water taxi services, etc. They're wonderful.)
