What is now called the Old Square was originally Plaza Nueva (New Square), built as a popular alternative to Plaza de Armas, the military and government nerve center. Later called Plaza del Mercado (Market Square) as Havana's commercial hub, Plaza Vieja was the site of executions, processions, bullfights, and fiestas -- all witnessed by Havana's wealthiest citizens, who looked on from their balconies. The original Carrara marble fountain surrounded by four dolphins was demolished in the 1930s when President Gerardo Machado (1871-1939) built an underground parking lot here. Today the square's surrounding structures vary wildly in condition, though all of them are noteworthy.

We stayed at a home directly on the square during our stay in Havana. Our balcony overlooked the square and we loved the people watching day and night. We especially loved watching the kids come to and from school each day. The history is rich in this area and the buildings are starting to be restored. We would highly recommend... More

This is one of the four squares in Havana and it is surrounded by some lovely old colonial buildings.

We visited here a couple of times when exploring Havana. This is one of the spots in Havana that has benefited from recent renovations. I guess it gives a view of what Havana was like in its past and what the Cuban government aspires to returning to. A very interesting juxtaposition with the still-decaying parts of the city.

The Beer factory faces the coffee shop, both well worth visiting. The beer is brewed on the premises and is delicious, try the 3 litre sharing pot. Beware the queue when buying coffee but the smell makes it worthwhile.

Beautiful by day or by night. An easy walk to all 4 squares in Old Havana. The buildings are a wonderful array of architecture from the Spanish occupation until the 1950s

I liked this square a lot because you could get a coffee, beer or coconut drink here. We had a beer at the brewery and just people watched. It was hard for us to see the dogs that needed to be fed just wondering around.

This is a centrally located square in the heart of Old Havana that has several hotels and restaurants. You can find live music at one of the hotels most afternoons and evenings.
