Built in 1963, the Harry Bayley Observatory recently underwent a total restoration of the building and refurbishment of its astronomical instruments in 2014.

The observatory is managed by The Barbados Astronomical Society Inc., A non-profit corporation whose objective is to educate the general public, with an emphasis on students, in the subject of astronomy.

The observatory is open on Friday evenings from 8 pm to 10 pm (weather permitting). The public can view a 1/2 hour interactive presentation from 8pm before enjoying superb views of the night sky through our 16" Meade telescope.

Minimum donations are USD$10 (BBD$20) for adults, USD$5 (BBD$10) for children 5 to 12, and free for children under 5.

I have been to Barbados many times and have never done this. We went last night on the back of my Dads recommendation. We couldn't recommend this enough - it was truly amazing. The guide was extremely informative and knowledgable. Well worth the $20BDS donation. It was an unforgettable and unique experience.

An enthusiastic young man led us on a 1.5 hour exploration of the heavens around us. The observatory is impressive, the only one of its kind in the Caribbean. Funded by the UK, it is truly a special and unusual experience. It is open on Friday nights. We had clear skies and were treated to close views of many planets... More

After building up the observatory to our friends and their 10 year old son, based on the reviews on here, we were very disappointed with our visit. There weren't enough seats when we arrived, that should have been an indicator that it was too busy, but as it was our only opportunity to visit we stayed. The initial briefing was... More

We're sorry that your visit was a disappointment. We cope poorly with crowds of over about 25, but to simply state the site is one of worst managed is unfair. We have no control over how many visitors will choose to show up on a Friday night... the week before we had 12 visitors and the week after we had... More

I am a novice when it comes to astronomy but the guide was very knowledgeable and took us through the main stars and the moon. Great views of the moon craters. Bring your mobile phones as the guide will take a photo of the moon from the telescope. It is true that there are lots of people that come to... More

We're very happy that you enjoyed your experience at the observatory! I'd like to clarify for other readers that we don't currently project views through the telescope on the screen in the auditorium. Those not wishing or are unable to climb the stairs to the dome are welcome to attend the auditorium presentation, which takes place for about 30 minutes... More

Would have been great if it had opened. Weather was perfect, cloudless sky so we took a taxi up but nobody turned up to open the observatory, we were stuck there outside for an hour until our taxi came to take us home at 9pm. A local person visiting tried to phone and they said something about the opening being... More

What a brilliant experience! Informative & inspiring! A top notch visit with Prof Ade sharing information about this world and others! Highly recommended! If you are travelling to Barbados, save a Friday night for a truly unique perspective.

We visited the Observatory on 19th August - two Barbadians with 6 U.S.A. friends and relatives. We were given a most informative lecture with video presentation before ascending the stairs to the Observatory platform from which we had a wonderful view of the scenery of Christ Church parish by night. Then into the observatory where the telescope was focused first... More

an excellent evening! Our guide was very informative and I came away with some amazing pictures of the moon! This place needs much more advertising as lots of tourists would visit if onlythey knew it existed. Having toured nearly every attraction, thiswas one of the best.

As a novice to astronomy I went along to this Observatory on a beautiful Friday evening. It is now up there in my top ten experiences. The tour / observation was extremely well organised and so interesting. From beginning to end the information received / presented was perfect for all attending regardless of their prior knowledge. This has to be... More

Brilliant efficient society staff that are very enthusiastic about sharing their passion with others. Arrived early and Ade was very chatty about the observatory and his passion. Started on time with a number of people arriving late. The presentation was extremely informative and sets you up for going to the telescope. The moon was clear and bright and we all... More
