- warrentravelorUnited States197 contributionsWorth the effort! Amazing viewsGreat views, but get ready! Lots and lots of steps, over 500 each way. Bring 2 big wster bottles, one for up and one for down, or a big big one. Sneakers with sock’s are a must! Some areas if the steps have railings others do not. Suggest going very early am when its cool like 7 or 8. If you cant make ot all the way, there is still beautiful views half way up.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 November 2023
- Rick PRaleigh, North Carolina4 contributionsImmensely satisfying - worth doingThis was a highlight of our fun Aruba trip. We went together the first time, encountering a group of goats about 100m away, which woke us up! They crossed the steps and into the foilage by the time we arrived at the point where they were crossing. The last 1/4 of the trek did not offer the large stone waiting areas so be prepared. My partner was quite anxious about this experience, but she celebrated the ascent for days after. I decided to go for a faster experience after we descended. My strong run at the beginning was forced by fatigue into a fast, heavy-breathing walk. I still ran the climb for brief periods! My stopwatch reported 11 minutes 45 seconds for the rise and return. Beautiful views and immensely satisfying.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 January 2024
- Mike PTamaqua, Pennsylvania174 contributionsNice morning hike with nice views! Not for the faint of heart though!Went for the sunrise... ended up being overcast that morning. Definitely not for the faint of heart.... but doable for even less than fit. Would not recommend for anyone that doesnt have a least a little bit of stamina. Steps may look nice and an easy walk, but its tough! Got to the top, very nice views. Dont need to see it again for sure.... once and done is enough.Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 13 March 2024
- sbenjamenWashington DC, District of Columbia364 contributionsStairway to HeavenSpoiler alert...I am afraid of heights and did not make it to the top, but still had a great time. The steps are well maintained and, in most places, include handrails. There are also a few stops "cupolas" long the way to ease your journey. With no shame...I said I cannot go further. The final set of steps are steep w/out handrail. But...I still had a great time and would do it again, just to see if I could make it to the top. And the views from each of the resting areas were very cool. My friend did make it to the top. His pics were spectacular.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 22 March 2024
- Ludster16 contributionsAmazing view, glad I didn’t die on the way up.Wow, thought I was going to die by the 1st pagoda. Took a nice 5-8 minute break and continued. Definitely helps to stop and take breaks as we all get older. Top 1/3-1/4 has no hand railings, but an easier climb. Coming down I may have scooted on my butt a bit for the lower half of the no railings section when I can clearly see how high I am. Glad to say I made it to the top, walked around to behind the 2nd building which had a great platform for amazing views!! Could definitely see Venezuela from the top, even with some haze along the coast, you could make out the land outline. Sunday was not as busy, maybe because Easter? If I had died not sure anyone would’ve been around to call polis. Only passed 1 couple going up, and 3 groups while going down. Loved it! Glad I did it! Not sure I’d do it again, well maybe if the family came this time. Definitely recommend this!!Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 31 March 2024
- amyp-ma84 contributionsBeautiful quick hike! This mountain is beautiful. You will climb I believe it’s around 574 steps to the top. There is rest points through out. With a few stops it took us just 20 minutes to the top. We did go for sunrise. If you plan on doing that bring a flashlight as it’s dark.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 April 2024
- thelordsjessPhilipsburg, St Martin / St Maarten11 contributionsWorth the burn.I went to the waterpark first and noticed the view of the hill from there. Out of curiosity I asked a friend who lives in Aruba to accompany me on the hike. He accepted but told me "get ready". We started the hike at about 9:30 a.m. to avoid the hot sun. Luckily there are a few shaded stops on the way up if you do decide to go at a later time. The staircase is narrow, perfect for two persons walking next to each other. The higher you go the steeper it gets. There are railings you can hold on to as you get to the steeper parts to aid with balance. It is quite a leg workout I must say. We met a 74 year old lady at the top. More motivation for us to keep going! The views are amazing. Enjoy the wind as well. It will be a great way to cool down after that hike. Walk with water and a hat.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 28 July 2024

We spent a day with our rental car touring the island. This was our third stop as we headed South. Entrance was a bit difficult to find but once we arrived you are greeted with a wall of steps that disappears as it ascend. Also surprised by three large billy goats strolling down the steps. Tough climb and the views are great going up but a bit disappointed at the top. Views limited by the cactus growth and the communication equipment. There are pipes along the ground you have to step over or around. However if you made it to the top you should be able to move around. Reasonable clear day we could see the entire island and coast of South America. Hike down can be a bit tough as well. No hand rails in most of the stairs. Hot day so we were glad we brought water along.

We took a group of about 20 people along for the close to 600 step climb to the top of Hooiberg. Our age group spanned from ages 10-70 and everyone enjoyed the experience very much. Roundtrip is 30-45 minutes unless you hang around at the top to enjoy the view of the island. Certainly a good way to kick start your morning. We started around 9a and the temperature was perfect.

I decided to go to Hooiberg hill for a morning run one day while on vacation while in Aruba. The hill has around 600 concrete steps to get to the top and it was challenging for this Florida flat land runner but definitely worth the run to the top. The view from the peak offers a 360 degree view of the island and with good weather you can see quite the distance. I would recommend if your looking for a good place to work out or to take your time to get to the top to enjoy the views.

Totally worth going!! The reviews are right about the best time of day to go being either sunrise or sunset for a magical experience. I went at sunrise and the weather was perfect, and only took us about 20 minutes to make it to the top. Pack plenty of water and take breaks as needed, but once you make it up you’ll forget how tired you even were. Entrance was easy to spot and no fence was in place. Go if you have a chance!

It was good to get out, be active, and do something other than in the ocean.
This is about 20-40minute walk up the cement steps to an excellent view. The time it takes depends on how often you stop to look around and your physical shape. At the top you're at an electrical station. keep climbing around to the side for a better higher view but WATCH YOUR STEP! There are rocks and electrical cables.
It was fun to see the goats perched at the top as we walked.
Go very early as it gets hot as soon as the sun rises. We arrived shortly after sunrise. Bring bug spray!

I am a vacationer who loves adventure and things in nature. This was a pretty laborious hike with the stairs and I would not recommend if you are not someone who enjoys walking. The view was amazing and it was a great feeling to make it up the last step! Even if this is not your forte, I recommend. The only downside of this was that if you do not have a car, you need to have access to a taxi driver. My partner and I had to walk through local streets to get to a main road.

If you have a car, this is a good option for a stair climb with a nice view at the top. Round-trip for healthy active people is about 40 minutes, depending on how long you want to enjoy the view. Good alternative to sitting on the beach. However, if you don't have access to a car, the locals suggested NOT taking a cab because it would be difficult to get a taxi for your return trip (unless you know a phone number of a cab company to call them, as I believe one is not able to "flag down" a taxi in Aruba).

Our group was glad we hiked up Hooiberg for the view and pictures at the top. Stairs weren’t bad at all and there were places to stop along the way. Our group of 11 got to the top in 20-25 minutes and we were taking our time. Walk around the building at the top to the other side for unobstructed views! Hiked at about 9:15 am and was not too hot. We took a taxi from our resort and arranged with our taxi driver to come back and get us.

Is it to get to the base from Oranjested by public transport?
Written 18 May 2022
Carolina

I have seen young children climbing. There are places to rest and lookouts. The stairs are concrete and in very good condition.

From the cruise boat, how much does a taxi cost and will the taxi wait for you? Also, how long does the hike take? Thank you!!
Written 2 January 2020
If you pay the taxi driver to wait, they will wait. If you are in good shape, it will be a piece of cake. The steps are mostly concrete. It took us less than an hour stopping to take in the sights and hike around a bit. If you're in shape, you can get up in 30 minutes without stopping no problem. We watched joggers go up and down for their workout very quickly.

Anyone know nearest restroom? Is there a shack or porta potty at the base?

Are there any snakes along this hike. Is it an old volcano or just a mountain
Written 2 August 2018
No snakes that we saw - a few bugs -and a quick rain shower. Not a volcano just a high hill on the island. Best tackled early in the day or late afternoon.
Written 2 August 2018
Hi I was wondering if there was anything at the bottom of the mountain for someone to do while I climbed? We are cruising and bringing my Mom who's hips could not climb. Is there anywhere to get a drink or anything??
Thanks
Written 6 April 2017
I don't recall anything at the bottom on the hike.
Written 15 April 2017
As the others have said, it is not a walk I would take from the cruise port. The views at the top are good, but obscured by all of the antennas and equipment. There are so many others places to see and do, if this was a cruise ship stop, I wouldn't go here.
