Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a great day hike to do, start early morning to try beat the heat a bit. The walk goes through the sacred forest, where there is a small natural pool, ideal place for picknick. The other way is down (or in our case up) the steeper and bare slope of the mountain. From some angles the top of the rock really look like a chameleon, hence the name. Throughout the hike, which is not too difficult, one has stunning views of the surrounding valley. Once on top you also have great views over the other valley and the Tsaranora mountain, for which there is a complicated legend.

Hiking the Chameleon (1600m) is not as challenging as it appears from the beginning of the track at Andonaka Village. The well worn trail ascends slowly past some stone tombs and a waterhole, always providing you with vistas of the stunning rock faces on the sheer domes across the valley. This is an easy trail and getting to the saddle of the Chameleon puts you in the perfect position to picnic while being awestruck by the views to the east, south and west along the Tsaranora Valley. You do require a bit of a head for heights to walk the final 25m out onto the rocks. The view from here is a rural one looking down on the villages, rice paddies and access tracks to the area. You get similar views as you descend in a series of switch backs eventually emerging at the Hotel Tsarasoa.
The saddle is a wonderful place to sit, have lunch and contemplate the sheer beauty of the remarkable geology of this area which seems to be completely beneath most tourists’ radar. In fact, it is worth travelling to Madagascar to see the Tsaranora Valley alone even if it is an hour by 4 x4 to get to the area from the main road south!

Spectacular view from the top of what appears initially to be an extremely challenging climb but should be doable for most moderately fit people. Multiple routes but the approach from the right side is relatively easy and follows brooks and streams for the first 2/3 and then goes up pretty steep. Left side is more steep but less interesting. Coming down is tougher. Can be easily climbed in 2 hrs.

We went here on a whim and it was our favourite place in Madagascar from the sheer stunning beauty of the place. Great way to spend the day in Tsaranoro. Do not miss it. We will be back with more time to take advantage of wandering our way in the tranquility of the place.

Tsarasoa camp organised a guide to take us to the top of Mt Chameleon. This was superb. We hiked up a steep track, viewing some ring-tailed lemurs on the way. It was very very hot so we needed plenty of water. The view from the top is amazing and well worth the effort. We had it to ourselves. We returned on a loop track and met only two other couples on the way down. The camp organised a lunch to be brought to the Natural Pool, where we were able to rest, before making our way back to camp. I am so glad we didn't miss this hike.

It is at the valley of Tsaranoro and not in the namoly valley! The hike starts early in the morning and you can be back to the hotel Camp Catta in midday. It's tough but interesting if you do not want to hike the long and difficult part of Andringitra. This is the only one option to hike Andringitra and no-camping. It is good idea to combine it with paragliding to come back to the hotel. You can ask at the hotel Camp Catta.

Our tour group climbed The Chameleon with guides. Being quite hot, we took it easy and stopped in shady places along the way which is why it takes so long.
The views along the way were wonderful and the track/trail well formed for regular hikers.
The top wasn't as steep as we expected and all of our group made it okay.
There were children and women selling trinkets before the main climb.
There is also a forest section where you can sometimes see lemurs but we didn't. The walk ends by walking through villages and farmland.
